A Devil’s Advocate Rings in a Bad Night for Bankers

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 hour ago
*-by Skip Kaltenheuser* It was a long hard slog to publish *Lucifer's Banker*. Had Brad Birkenfeld managed to get his book out say, a year or so earlier, we might not be staring at the political train wreck we are now. It might have changed the political landscape, perhaps the standard bearers. Maybe even elevated different issues for the last lap beyond the cursory checklist now fed us. But I’m glad it’s arrived. This book underscores every lament Bernie Sanders uttered about the gravity of the finance sector's black hole. There's ample material to make Washington insiders lose s... more »

And the wind stirred the pines, and the hickories, and the oaks, and rippled the pond that shone like silver in the early morning sun. And then, to honor the spirit of the man we came to visit, we sat silently, as if on the stoop of his cabin with friends, knowing that any words, even his own, intruded on the haunting beauty of the place itself. Millions Of American Men Exposed To Feminizing Chemical In Drinking Water

Atrazine, a potent hormone disrupter linked to sex-changes in animals and powerful effects on humans in extremely low doses has been found in one in 6 American’s drinking water. According to research, exposure to atrazine in utero can cause genital deformation in young boys, including the development of a micropenis, medically known as microphallus. The Poet: William Stafford, "Ask Me"

*"Ask Me"* "Some time when the river is ice ask me mistakes I have made. Ask me whether what I have done is my life. Others have come in their slow way into my thought, and some have tried to help or to hurt: ask me what difference their strongest love or hate has made. I will listen to what you say. You and I can turn and look at the silent river and wait. We know the current is there, hidden, and there are comings and goings from miles away that hold the stillness exactly before us. "The Unique Human Capacity for War"

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 4 hours ago
*"The Unique Human Capacity for War"* By Michael Brenner The question “why war?” has long inspired scholars to seek answers in human nature. Their findings invariably have been ambiguous and judgments inconclusive. While it is easy to make the case that humans do engage in violent behavior as part of their nature, there is no basis for arguing that they are “killers.” There is no propensity to kill fellow humans that prevails over other forms of social inter-action. Moreover, the development of organized societies as their standard habitat introduces cultural and structural elemen... more »

Bermuda Triangle Mystery Solved?- Air Bombs In Atlantic

Scientists claim to have solved the age old mystery of why some ships and aircraft vanish in the Bermuda Triangle, a 500,000 km square patch of ocean between Florida, Puerto Rico and Bermuda. A rare and severe weather pattern may be responsible. Hexagonal clouds over the region suggest the existence of killer air bombs, blasts of air that slam into the Atlantic Ocean and spread outward. They can create 170mph winds and massive waves capable of downing planes and flipping over ships. For decades, medical professionals, pharmaceutical labs and chemists from around the world have tried to find the antidote to cancer and year after year they fail miserably. The cancer industry needs cancer to stay in business. Dr. Jeffrey Bradstreet ran a clinic in Georgia ‘treating children with Autism’ using unconventional me... more »

Dangerous Fault Lines Under San Francisco Found To Be Connected

Carol Adl at Your News Wire - 13 hours ago
Two of the most dangerous earthquake faults in the San Francisco Bay Area are connected, meaning both could rupture simultaneously and unleash major devastation, a new study has found. A previously unseen fault line has been discovered, doubling the length of the existing quake faults and threatening an even more colossal earthquake. USGS geologists published their findings in the Science Advances journal, which suggest that if a quake on the connected Rodgers Creek and Hayward faults were to happen, the energy from the trembler could be five times greater than the devastating Lom...more »

Fourth girl takes own life in Northern Saskatchewan

*"Fear" - by Andy Everson* Lost in all the stories about international war mongering and the American election was the sad story reported two days ago that yet another young First Nations Girl took her own life in Northern Saskatchewan. This time, a 10 year old. The CBC report as usual mentioned that the community was coming together to mourn the loss and to try to prevent yet more supposedly inexplicable calamities. “Long before Stonehenge was built, well before the Dead Sea Scrolls were written, ancient artists painted life-sized figures on canyon walls in Utah, USA- but why? Nobody is sure. The entire panel of figures, which dates back about 7,000 years, is called the Great Gallery and was found on the walls of Horseshoe Canyon in Canyonlands National Park. *Click image for larger size.* The humans who painted them likely hunted Mammoths. The unusual fuzziness of largest figure led to this mural section's informal designation as the Holy Ghost Panel, although the intended attribution and socie... more »

Chet Raymo, “The Sound And Fury”

*“The Sound And Fury”* by Chet Raymo “Not so long ago, I mentioned here Himmler and Heydrich, two of Hitler's most terrible henchmen. A friend said to me: "If there's no afterlife, no heaven or hell, then those two diabolical creatures got away with it. Their fate was no different than that of any one of their victims, an innocent child perhaps." And, yes, if there is no God who dispenses final justice, then we are left with an aching feeling of irresolution, of virtue unrewarded, of vice unpunished. Heydrich was gunned down by partisan assassins, and Himmler committed suicide a fe... more »

Blame Russia For Everything

*Rod Liddle, The Spectator:* *Stop this stupid sabre-rattling against Russia* *It’s not their side that worries me; it’s ours.* I have been wondering these last few weeks whether it would be cheaper to excavate a basement and buy a Geiger counter and iodine tablets, or emigrate to New Zealand. Call me frit, but I don’t like the way things are heading. Probably the second option is easier: Armageddon outta here, etc. I can re-enact Nevil Shute’s On the Beach from some rocky cove near Dunedin, waiting for the fallout to arrive. What Political Debates Would Look Like If I Was In Charge

*-by Noah* Intro: Ok. The last presidential debate is over. Done. Like anyone else with at least half a mind (Yeah, I know that leaves out Rudy Giuliani and others). I am disgusted with the whole enterprise. With that in mind, I thought I would benefit mankind by drawing up a plan for how political debates would run if I were in charge. Here you go: 14 steps to a more sensible approach to our political debate process. Says who? Says me! *1.* All debates would be held in a court of law. There would be background music as the show began. This music could be faded up and down throug... more »

(By *American Zen*'s Mike Flannigan, on loan from Ari) *L*ast night, Donald Trump hurt himself. He'd hurt a lot of people both officially and emotionally attached to his snake oil traveling roadshow of a campaign, none of whom are deserving of any pity or sorrow but that's beside the point. He plainly lost last night's debate, which I didn't even bother watching. For the purposes of half-assed punditry, it was enough to just read the analyses of better writers than I in the Yahoo alerts that came streaming into my Android. *“On The Damned Human Race”* by Mark Twain “I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the lower animals (so-called), and contrasting them with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me. For it obliges me to renounce my allegiance to the Darwinian theory of the Ascent of Man from the Lower Animals; since it now seems plain to me that the theory ought to be vacated in favor of a new and truer one, this new and truer one to be named the Descent of Man from the Higher Animals. In proceeding toward this unpleasant conclusion I have not guessed or ... more »

The end of meat?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
The great news is that we can produce a vegetable product that tastes like meat. That will serve to take the pressure of the meat industry to supply all our high quality protein needs. This needs to be done regardless. Animals are an integral part of effective organic farming and this produces a natural supply of meats. If anything industrial farming seriously under utilizes the animals abilities. It is naturally wasteful as well. They will not be going away soon If anything many other species will be equally successful. As noted we are also learning to convert insects... more »

Trump On The Fake War Against ISIS In Mosul

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 1 day ago
Trump told the truth about *the politicized timing of the battle for Mosul*. Only an idiot thinks politics didn't have anything to do with the plan to liberate Mosul at this point in time. The sad truth is that Mosul didn't need to be liberated if it had been protected more willfully. The Iraqis, the Americans, the Saudis, and the Barzani-led Kurdish government ceded Iraqi territory to ISIS on purpose. They sacrificed the Ezidis to them on that mountain. Not a fan of ISIS, but the Iraqis and the "coalition" don't deserve to win this war, not after that shameful deed. Now they're... more »
