The Trans-Pacific Partnership (or TPP) is a trade deal that is being negotiated in secret between the U.S. and 11 other Pacific bordering nations. The secrecy is necessary because TPP's objective is be NAFTA on steroids, whereas twenty years of NAFTA cost "one millon U.S. jobs lost, mass displacement and instability in Mexico, record income inequality, [and] scores of corporate attacks on environmental and health laws" according to Public Citizen. DANGER ZONE

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 hour ago
This graphic tells the story. The US military "pivot" into the Asia-Pacific is provocative. Imagine if another nation was moving 60% of its military might right off the shores of the US's east and west coasts. Washington would take it as a declaration of war. When the US does it no one is supposed to bat an eye. That one hurts. China is the target. North Korea, that pip-squeak with mostly outdated military technology (according to the Pentagon), is just the excuse. When I was in the Air Force I had a friend that had once been stationed in Korea during the 60's. Cold War f... more »

In an overview of the thousands of pages of emails and texts which were released the day before, two AP reporters mused about the “traffic study” which devoured Fort Lee. Overall, the AP report painted an unflattering picture of the conduct of the Christie team during and after the now-famous lane closings. The Conservatives have introduced a bill to "reform" the civil service. Lawrence Martin writes that, essentially, it is a directive that non conservatives need not apply: Call it the Loyalty Act. According to the bill brought forward by MP Mark Adler of the York Centre riding, if the disclosures turn up suspicious past political activities, MPs or senators could then demand an investigation of the offender or offenders. Yesterday, the Supreme Court was put in the embarrassing position of deciding whether or not to approve one of its potential members. The reason was another of Stephen Harper's attempts to get his way. The arguments in front of the court were legal. But the real question was -- and is -- whether there were eminently more qualified justices than Marc Nadon. Andrew Coyne writes: No legal expert that I am aware of considers Mr. Nadon to be among even the first rank of jurists from Quebec, except in the relatively narrow field of maritime law. What Will New Jersey's Universal Pre-K Look Like?

Universal pre-K is a no brainer when it comes to providing children with a good start. Then again, brains appear to be in short supply here in New Jersey as voters swept a corrupt Christie administration into office AGAIN. While Christie and his cronies in Trenton hide out from the media, lawyers and the public, Barbara Buono's legislation on school funding reform is making its way to the legislature and getting some serious attention, F... more »

Just over a week ago, we presented a post featuring JFK ruing the day he had ever decided to keep Allen Dulles as head of the CIA. NOt just that-- JFK was ruing the day he had ever gotten into business with the CIA at all. Incredibly incompetent and determined to run its own unaccountable proto-fascist foreign policy, the CIA, Kennedy came to realize, was the center of evil in American politics. Does God exist?

This topic has perplexed me since I was a young kid and I still don't know the answer. Input from the fellow bloggers will be appreciated. *Does God exist?* If the answer is 'yes' then why God is hiding from his creation. *"The Hiddenness of God"A related problem is that of divine hiddenness. Many people are perplexed and see as problematic that, if God exists, God does not make his existence sufficiently clear and available. The problem, concisely stated, can be put this way. If God exists as the perfect, loving, omnibenevolent being that theists have generally taken God to... more »

You are convinced that the severity of your actions is an indication of how barbaric or civilized you are. What is civilization really? Is it the degree of conveniences available to the common man? Is it, or rather, isn’t it instead supposed to be, the hallmark of advancement? We label superiority of civilization very specifically. It has to do with how much is physically available to plug in or turn on. Civilized “superiority” in its true sense, is a much different attribute.
