GROWING POLICE BRUTALITY

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 36 minutes ago
Almost daily I see reports, photos, and videos of growing police brutality across the US. The video is one of the worst yet. This kind of thing happens(ed) regularly in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan where the US military has free reign over the public. Then these soldiers come home and many of them get jobs working for local police departments or jails/prisons. They bring the brutality of the war zone with them. This video is disgusting but a true sign of the times. This is how minority people, and increasingly low-income whites too, are being treated by a highly mil... more »

The Ainu Saga

What Is Sustainable at What Is Sustainable - 1 hour ago
Once upon a time, I was flipping through an encyclopedia of hunter-gatherers, and came to the Ainu section, the wild people of Japan. There was a photo of a longhaired man, with a long beard, standing knee deep in a stream, a fish hanging from his spear. I was immediately fascinated. The image did not blend in with my other images of Japan — images of highly efficient people who spend their stressful lives indoors, as we do. The wild man struck an ancestral chord — many of my wild European ancestors were salmon people, too. I had to learn more. Japan is not an archaeologist’s ... more »

That's the name of a whole new literary genre bursting forth from the Style pages of the *New York Times*. One such entrycelebrated the spiritual journey and sexual awakening of a woman after she serendipitously and fatally struck a child with her car. Party Strength and the Shutdown

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 2 hours ago
Mark Schmidt has a very much worth reading piece over at TNR in which he makes the counterintuitive case that the problem leading to the shutdown is party weakness, not party strength. I recommend it, but I'd take the same facts and put it in a different way. To some extent, this is just terminology, but I think that there's more to it than that; properly understanding party strength is necessary to understanding what's gone wrong with the GOP. Here's a taste of his argument: In fact, “partisanship” isn’t the cause of the shutdown. And we’d probably be better off if politicians—tha... more »

Beagley, probably my favourite (but don't tell the others)I grow fonder of free-range dog culture with each passing day. Dogs are so much more civilized and resourceful than I would have expected, and I love seeing how they organize their world when left to their own devices. Whether stray or owned, the majority of Copan Ruinas dogs roam the streets as they choose. Unlike the highly regulated dog environment of Victoria, these dogs live largely without human interference. Jurisdiction over several causes of action established if one cause is established

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 2 hours ago
Central Sun Mining Inc. v. Vector Engineering Inc., 2013 ONCA 601: [25] *Van Breda* also says, at para. 99, that where an action involves several claims, it is enough that one of those claims is presumptively connected with Ontario. This gives the Ontario court jurisdiction over all the claims in the action, subject to a rebuttal of the presumption. Anything else, the Supreme Court says, would be incompatible with fairness and efficiency.

Remember A Pattern Language? 1977! It's still out there. I remember the review in Coevolution Quarterly. I instinctively felt that, while the author was articulating home, neighborhood and city construction onto observable natural patterns and cycles, the underlying principle (observe, then imitate) would be applicable to any human endeavor. I immediately became interested in Margaret Mead, Gregory Bateson and other scientists who were investigating positive feedbacks in loop systems ( Cybernetics, Systems Theory). Why Is the Secretary of Education Doing a Rush/Beck Routine?

A sure sign someone doesn’t have a valid point is demonstrated nearly every day in right-wing media—notably by Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. I suppose that many of you who visit my blog are, like me, retired with a pension or adequate savings to live out the rest of our lives in comfort. In the meantime, even Americans with degrees in engineering, physics, or other professions requiring higher education cannot find jobs anywhere except for the likes of Walmart, Home Depot, McDonalds, etc., which at their pleasure may employ them for no more than 30 hours a week, thus making them ineligible for either a pension or Obama care, which as explained here by PCR is a bad deal for most.

* * * “Through Thick And Thin”* by Chet Raymo “You hear a lot about "thin places" these days, especially in the context of "Celtic spirituality." Thin places are geographical locales where the veil between this world and the otherworld is- well, thin. Porous, permeable. Places where you are more likely to encounter the Divine. Mostly our lives are circumscribed by the adamant materiality of the natural world. We are enclosed in a prison of "is-ness." But in thin places we need only open our hearts and the wall of Is-ness crumbles and the supernatural is revealed in all of its gau... more »

But with the right wing lunacy being ratcheted up on all fronts this past week, how could yours truly give these rubber room candidates another free pass? What am I talking about? Put it this way: If America was a movie, the title would be, "Dude, Where's My Government?" "He, We, Will Prevail..."

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 18 hours ago
"I believe that Man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet’s, the writer’s, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past.” - William Faulkner, speech in acceptance of the 1950 Nobel Prize for Literature.

ASD in TN Makes State Test the Only Grade that Counts

We have known for a long time that school grades are better indicators of later student success than standardized test scores, and we have known, too, that many parents have complained and continue to complain when their children get passing marks and are held back for failing the state test. Why Descartes' "Proof" of the Existence of God is Fallacious

Len Hart at The Existentialist Cowboy - 1 day ago
*by Len Hart, the Existentialist Cowboy* In a nutshell Descartes' "proof" is derived from a definition of God! Simply, God must exist by definition. But that assumes his existence. If it were true, then "God" is the only thing proven to exist by definition. There are various versions of the Ontological argument. Descartes' version differs from that of St Anselm which was, interestingly, referred to in one of the Indiana Jones movies. Descartes' latter's version, indeed, proceeds from the definition of the word "God" and is, therefore, problematic from the outset! How, for example, ... more »

Read Stuff, You Should

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 1 day ago
Happy Birthday to Randy Quaid, 63. Good stuff: 1. Ross Douthat mostly makes sense about the shutdown as party strategy. 2. Jim DeMint and Obamacare, from Lucia Graves. 3. Ezra Klein and Sarah Kliff have a monster ACA FAQ. 4. John Sides on, roughly, mandates and democracy. 5. Read Ed Kilgore's disagreement with me over Boehner. 5. And Stan Collender on why the shutdown will last at least a week. That's what I would think, with only one main alternative possibility: that Republicans already decided in advance that they wanted, for whatever reason, to get over the deadline before c... more »

Obama and the Myth of "American Exceptionalism"

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 1 day ago
*Eric Draitser of StopImperialism.com appears on RT on Friday September 27, 2013 to discuss the issue of "American Exceptionalism" as described by Obama in his speech at the UN General Assembly. Draitser explains how Obama's rhetoric is meant as a response to Russian President Putin's Op-Ed piece in the NY Times which questioned the merits of so-called "exceptionalism". Additionally, Draitser examines the way in which this idea is deeply embedded within the collective psyche of the American people and that this notion is used to justify the worst elements of US foreign policy. The Top 10 Ways The US Government Shutdown Will Affect You Today

[image: Related Posts Plugin for WordPress, Blogger...] Jeff Berwick The stroke of midnight has just passed and the US government has turned into a pumpkin. Well, we wish. In fact the US government like some eternal zombie continues to walk the Earth even without the souls of taxpayers upon which to feast. And, even that isn't totally true. Like any zombie it still collects the blood of its victims (taxes) even while most of its zombie army (federal government employees) sit at home on a paid vacation... and most of their oppressive "services" continue on, like the CIA, NSA, ... more »

The Assault on Public Education in SC Continues: More Innovation!

P. L. Thomas at Schools Matter - 1 day ago
How much education innovation can a high-poverty state take? Apparently, according to former-general-without-a-second-of-experience-as-a-teacher Superintendent Mick Zais, just a little more. As reported by Patrick Hayes at EdFirstSC (and not reported at the Charleston Post and Courier because the P&C is all about endorsing the worst possible policies for SC public schools, such as merit pay and VAM as well as TFA, charter schools, and misguided teacher evaluations), Zais wants to delete rules that limit class size, teacher workloads, and mandatory staffing levels for teachers, guida... more »

*TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2013* *Part 2—One different world:* Why do students in miraculous Finland top the world in reading and math on international tests? Correction! Miraculous Finland’s very good students don’t always top the world. Let’s recall what happened in 2011 on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), one of the three (3) major international tests in which the developed nations take part. You heard it! There are *three* major international testing programs (3), not just one (1). What happened on the 2011 TIMSS in both grades tested (grades 4 and ... more »
