10:27pm MDSTReview - Chi Bar
Do you ever crave something sweet but avoid sugary, unhealthy candy bars?
Like me, you might browse the granola or energy bar selections thinking
that they contain nutritious ingredients ... and then feel disappointed
seeing things like hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup on the
label. The few wholesome bars on the shelves often lack flavor or a
pleasant texture ... I tried a sample which made me think of sawdust.

"We have a duty to Canada" to easy the flow of products to Asia, she told

Paul Ryan Gets A Letter From A Constituent

What do you think of the $52 billion in profits to the US Treasury made by
the government taking over student lending?
Haven't heard you praising the outcome of a "Government Takeover."
Why?
Could it be that those profits would have been gravy profits to your

It sure seems to me this is an excellent example of Government gone right.

Southern Man Rescues A Turtle
Southern Man saw this good-sized common snapping turtle (*chelydra

He was a beast, easily capable of taking a finger. Southern Man managed to

And then Southern Man found a box and transported the beast to The Land.
Here he is near the dock pilings.
The Beast wasn't too happy about the move, but The Land is and always will

We Are Fat and Happy and Can Suckle Some More
When I think of a certain line in *Gladiator*, one spoken by the late
Oliver Reed, I think of the US government and the countless war profiteers
it employs: "And the great whore will suckle us until* *we are fat and
happy and can suckle no more." That line could've been spoken by any of the
contract procurement specialists whose job it is to dispense multi-billion
cost-plus, no-bid contracts like alms to the already rich and bloated.
And then when I hear this line, I think of those who've been
entrusted with the lives and welfare of our troops overseas and this

Of Bitumen and Pirates
The Harper government never ceases playing up the terrorist threat that
Canada faces. They're here, they're there, they're everywhere.
Supertankers heavily laden with bitumen. How vulnerable are they to
terrorism and just how do you protect them?
Vancouver's inner harbour might seem a terrorist's dream. There are places
where you could sink a tanker and block the harbour for who knows how long
while the bitumen aboard wreaks havoc.
What if the bad guys just seized the bridge, commandeered the vessel and
used it to attack the Lion's Gate or Second Narrow crossings?

Presidential Approval Probably Isn't Stuck At Midrange
Ezra Klein poses a hypothesis I've heard a few times before at the end of a
nice post earlier this week:
Tucked inside Abramowitz’s take is an interesting structural prediction
about American politics: As party polarization increases and the
persuadable middle dwindles, scandals and gaffes will become less
meaningful as they’ll only be able to convince those who want to be
convinced. It’s not clear that the IRS mess, Benghazi, or the DoJ/AP issue
will rise to the level of being a useful test of this thesis. But something
will.
It's tempting to believe that polarization is producing... more »
DO GOOD THINGS
- I got a call from a media outlet last night just after 11:00 pm as I
was climbing into bed. They said something about a nuclear device that had
fallen off a truck somewhere in West Virginia and wanted my comment. I
told them it was late and to call back in the morning. I knew they
wouldn't. This morning I did some searching on the Internet and found the
story. Yes, indeed do call if you find it! Here it is:

The collapse of journalism and
the journalism of collapse:
From royal, to prophetic, to apocalyptic
When we strip away supernatural claims and delusions of grandeur, we can

Dried Framed Wedding Bouquet
After I was married, my mom took great pains to hang my wedding bouquet
so that it would be preserved for me to display in my house. She gave it to
me when we got home for our honeymoon and I promptly put it in a box and

then forget about it again.
When we moved into our townhouse, I finally had some room to craft and I

A Win for the Bees
Two things are happening:

2 The actual science is steadily trickling in and a damning body of work

On Tuesday, B.C. voters were left with two negative questions: Did they

In the end, they chose fear over hate.
Fear seems to be the operative word these days. It was fear that was at the

This morning, Diane Abbott gave a heavily trailed speech on the crisis of

With the semester coming to an end, time to hit the Internets and start
blogging more regularly. I’ve been meaning to write one for months about
the poaching crisis. It’s coming. In the meantime, here is yet another
story on the corrosive effects on governance by Sudanese elephant poachers
in the Central African Republic. Elsewhere,

*After reading the following article .. much of what's happening with
Senator Duffy suddenly became very clear. *
*1) Some of the 'Senate business' expense claims filed by Mr. Duffy may
well have been for travel to and from Conservative Party fundraising events
around the country. (We don't know and can't find out because Senator Duffy
will not co-operate with the auditors .. saying that he has repaid the $90
grand ... 'so get off my back' .... ).*
*2) Duffy is not prepared to be hung out to dry or left 'out of pocket' by
the Harper cabal. After all, ... more »
Mommy, How Did The Tea Party Start?
If we were alive back in the 1770s, today's Tea Party activists would
probably have been active back then too-- but active on behalf of the
British. Conservatives fought against the revolutionaries who wanted to
throw off the British imperial yoke and many conservatives would up
fighting on the side of the British troops, killing patriots. Today's Tea
Partiers would have been those traitors to America.
How do I know? If you think teabaggers only live in backward, theocratic
parts of South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Texas, you've
never been to California's Inland E... more »
A Global Survey of IR Students – Might be Worth Pitching in your Classes
Daryl Morini, an IR PhD candidate at the University of Queensland whom I
know, has put together an interesting global survey for undergraduate and
graduate students of international relations. It looks pretty thorough and
might make a pretty interesting student couter-point to TRIP. Eventually
the goal is an article on our students’ attitudes toward the

Sentence appeals
R. v. Lu, 2013 ONCA 324 holds:
[37] Before dealing with these submissions, it is important to recall
the role of an appellate court when reviewing a sentencing decision.
Appellate courts are to grant sentencing judges considerable deference when
reviewing the fitness of a sentence. They are to interfere only where the
sentence is demonstrably unfit, or where it reflects an error in principle,
the failure to consider a relevant factor or the over-emphasis of a
relevant factor. An appellate court cannot interfere with the sentence
simply because it would have weighed the re... more »

Trust a Teacher. By John Stoffel
An assumption exists that teachers are against high-stakes testing because
they don’t want to risk evaluation. It continues that if teachers are not
evaluated by testing data, they will have no incentive to do their job
well. If teachers fail to do their job, then a generation of young children
faces a bleak future. What […]
U.S. PREPARED FOR WAR WITH IRAN AS ISRAEL BOMBED SYRIA
Israel bombed Syria on 2 and 5 May 2013 and the next day, as the world
waited for a reaction from Syria, Hezbollah and Iran, the US began a
massive war exercise in the Persian Gulf close to Iran. Since President
Obama has said that the US was in ‘very close contact with Israel’, it is
clear that both the Israeli raids on Syria and the US military exercise in
the Gulf were planned to coincide.
Unfortunately for the warmongers in the West, neither Syria, Hezbollah nor
Iran took the bait. Despite this, Israel has said that it will try again to
provoke its enemies warning that Israel ma... more »
NY: Calling on You to Stop Field Testing
In three weeks, students at over 3,600 schools in New York State will
receive a nasty surprise. They mistakenly believe that, for this school
year at least, they are done taking tests. When they least expect it, the
number 2 pencils and bubble sheets will reappear. When I was in elementary
school, June brought Field […]
State Department Brief May 15, Taiwan section on Phils/Taiwan clash

State Department Daily Press Briefing, May 15, 2013. Main questioner, I
heard, was John Zhang of CTITV
*+++++++++++++++++*
MR VENTRELL: It looks like we have some questions maybe on the Philippines
and Taiwan. (Laughter.) I’m just guessing.
QUESTION: Yeah. Patrick, do you have anything new to say on the fatal
shooting of the Taiwanese fisherman by the Philippines? Jen said a couple
of days ago that the United States was in contact with both Taiwan and the
Philippines. How is your communication with both sides? How effecti... more »
THE TOTALITARIAN & SECURITY SURVEILLANCE STATE
The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges joins Democracy Now to
discuss what could mark the most significant government intrusion on
freedom of the press in decades. The Justice Department has acknowledged
seizing the work, home and cellphone records used by almost 100 reporters
and editors at the Associated Press. The phones targeted included the
general AP office numbers in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Hartford,
Connecticut, and the main number for the AP in the House of Representatives
press gallery. The action likely came as part of a probe into the leaks

"Between news of the IRS targeting the Tea Party, the on-going hearings on
Benghazi and the Department of Justice spying on AP reporters, President

*“The IRS Wants YOU — To Share Everything”*
By David Nathe, Tarini Parti and Byron Tau
"The Internal Revenue Service asked tea party groups to see donor
rolls. It asked for printouts of Facebook posts. And it asked what books
people were reading. A POLITICO review of documents from 11 tea party and
conservative groups that the IRS scrutinized in 2012 shows the agency
wanted to know everything — in some cases, it even seemed curious what
members were thinking. The review included interviews with groups or their
representatives from Hawaii, New Mexico, Ohio, Texas and elsewhere... more »

Fired, shmired -- isn't it time we started having "the appropriate person" KILLED?
*New State Dept. spokesperson Jen Psaki -- joking on the job?*
*by Ken*
On the theory that at times like this the White House will embrace good, or
good-ish, news wherever it can find it, Al Kamen titles today's WaPo "In
the Loop" column "What's going right for Obama," and what's going right
turns out to be that so far among his second-term cabinet appointments, not
a one has had to withdraw. By contrast, going into the first term we saw
withdrawals by commerce nominees Bill Richardson and Judd Gregg and HHS
nominee Tom Daschle. Al notes:
Even though Obama's most recent nominees -... more »

Give 'em heck Harry
Well here we go again. Harry Reid is kinda, sorta, thinking hard about cracking
down on GOP obstruction.
“I’m not going to do anything now, precipitously,” he said. “But I’m
looking at this very closely…. We’re going to fill that job. Cordray is
there now. He’s going to get a vote.”
Corday you'll recall is the long being held in limbo nominee to head the
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. You'll also remember the GOPers are
refusing to allow a vote unless the Dems agree to render the agency
completely toothless, unable to enforce any actual consumer protection
against predatory... more »
