The cost of repealing Obamacare

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 2 minutes ago
Not talking about the costs as related to health care or the deficit. This is simply the cost to the taxpayer for the time it takes Congress to keep producing these "message bills" the crackpot cons insist on repeatedly bringing to the floor in order to impress the rubes back home. Steve Daines represents Montana, which, at last count, takes in $1.92 of money from big government Beltway solutions for every dollar in taxes Montanas send to the rest of us. And, by the time the House arranged to define the word "quixotic" for the ages for the 33rd time, which was almost a year ago, t... more »

GOP agree: Feed the rich, starve the poor

Rebuffing Democratic attempts to stop this inhumane pandering to special interests, Republicans rammed a bill through committee that starves children of the poor and impoverished olds in order to give more money to wealthy corporate farmers. A Republican-controlled panel in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday approved the biggest cuts in food stamps for the poor in a generation and a potentially expensive expansion of federally subsidized crop insurance. Benghazi grandstanding blows up in Issa's face

After months of pounding the podium in outrage, demanding answers, suddenly Darrell Issa needs to think about whether to question the lead Benghazi investigators. Ignore the Twitter News Cycle on Scandals

On Tuesday, they were measuring out the president's tomb. Today, with no big revelations on any of the current scandals (or "scandals" as the case may be), liberals at least, and I get the sense much of the neutral press, is almost ready to announce the whole thing a dud. They were wrong on Tuesday; they're wrong today. The truth? We mostly don't know what will happen. Look, the Benghazi thing remains, as far as I'm concerned, just as big a nothing as it's been all along; the talking points, which have been the GOP focus, just don't matter. America has increasingly been turning itself into an outlaw state. It practices indefinite detention without charge or trial. It resorts to torture. That sends him into a panic trying to get PEI to get him a health care card via Fed Ex Overnight, yada, yada, yada. That doesn't work. Duffy comes clean with the PMO (if they don't already know) that it's more... more »

Man Clinically Dead For 40 Minutes Brought Back To Life

I had the good fortune of receiving twenty minutes of properly applied CPR and was then successfully resuscitated several years ago. In London we have had someone go an astounding two and one half hours and walk out after. I do not know if I was the first known example but the case was so clear that it brooked no further discussion. Since then we have seen a global change over take place in medical thinking and the emergence of resuscitation practice. A Win for the Bees

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 6 hours ago
Two things are happening: 1 The bee population collapse is continuing and possibly accelerating. It is certainly happening everywhere the pesticides are been used. The bees are been subjected to a winnowing gauntlet and at a certain threshold, the population does collapse. 2 The actual science is steadily trickling in and a damning body of work is been amassed. Yet the industry continues to play their game of obstruction, denial and misinformation to postpone regulatory action. The third shoe is also about to drop. It is that the protocol that saturates the environm... more »

Here is a protocol that I have not seen before. It appears to be effective to some degree and may well be way more effective in the face of a serious pathology. It is certainly safe enough to experiment with. It would also be an effective way to deliver a drug directly into the tissue in one's mouth. Certainly something to experiment with if the need arises. We have been brainwashed into accepting pill technology almost as a sole delivery process, except that it all ends up in an enzyme bath that must affect any drug. The only item on this ridiculous laundry list that deserves to be considered at all is the last one which has been introduced newly into the environment and for which we are now discovering increased toxicity in combination well beyond expectations. Bluntly the pesticide protocol is now entering an era of maximum damage and rapidly declining effectiveness. This year the CCD problem became a bee pandemic and is impacting everywhere. Worse there is no evidence of it running itself out as yet. It is certainly not biological as that will run itself out and we have no sign of... more »

Water, Water Everywhere-- And An Obstructionist Senate Who Won't Allow It To Be Cleaned Up

This morning I was going over the Senate votes from Tuesday and I found a strange one. The Republicans successfully filibustered an amendment by Bernie Sanders to Boxer's Water Resources Development Act of 2013, which is co-sponsored by Louisiana Republican David Vitter. And in fact, Vitter was one of just 3 Republicans who broke with Miss McConnell's filibuster machine on Sanders' amendment. The amendment would essentially allow FEMA to rebuild bridges and other infrastructure to the state's high standards, so that they don't collapse in the next storm. It was interesting the Texa... more »

The following essay is by Paul Chefurka. The original is posted at his website. It is a beacon of light for three reasons (that come to mind before coffee). First, it deftly sidesteps all the political squabbling over whether climate change is happening or not and goes straight to the heart of the intractable human conundrum. Second, his main thesis - that our dilemma is both inevitable and insoluble - is robustly supported by irrefutable evidence (unless you subscribe to mirages, but then I can't help you). And third, he offers the only way for an individual to live humbly a... more »

Or did they fear the New Democrats enough to avoid them? In the end, they chose fear over hate. Fear seems to be the operative word these days. So why did the NDP lead in the polls evaporate? Sure, the $17 million in taxpayers’ money spent promoting the Liberals was a factor, as were the negative ads. From far away, I’d offer four more basic reasons. Christy Clark and the Liberals ran a tidy campaign with a simple message. The Liberals, they said, would manage the economy better and protect jobs. They gave people something to vote for, in a vague and not particularly credible way. They also ran gave people reasons not to vote for the NDP, arguing Adrian Dix was at best an unknown quantity and the party platform unclear. (And ... more »

The most interesting thing about the Benghazi attack on September 11, 2012, and the one that is least talked about in the U.S. press, is the date. If it happened on any other day then you could argue more successfully that the attack was spontaneous in nature and that Islamic radicals devised the whole operation from scratch. But I have trouble believing that NATO-armed Jihadist terrorist groups were the only parties involved in the attack against the U.S. ambassador because of the symbolic nature of the date, its connection to the 9/11 false flag, and the mysterious circumstances s... more »

America's founding fathers knew that all too well when they enacted the Fourth Amendment, the one against unreasonable search and seizure. For when a government can freely enter you home or explore the most minute details of your life, your privacy is essentially gone. The great British jurist, Sir Edward Coke, put it this way in 1604, "*The house of every one is to him as his castle... more »

Sheikh Ali Hatem Sulaiman is one of the leaders of the Dulaim tribe, one of the largest in western Iraq that stretches into neighboring Jordan. It wasn’t that long ago however, that the sheikh was an ally of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. His path that led him from a supporter to an opponent of the government is due to Sulaiman’s opportunism, and desire to become a prominent sheikh throughout Iraq like his grandfather once was. ‘Death of a Moa’ by Trevor Lloyd

Here’s a NZ landscape painter from the 19th Century with a sense of humour: Trevor Lloyd. (Do you see it?) The Auckland Art Gallery apparently has a huge collection of his work, but rarely let it see the light of day. About this one they say: Made for the enjoyment of his family, this unique fantasy painting is one of Lloyd's most ambitious works. The last giant moa has fallen, its body watched over by a gathering of native birds and patupaiarehe, mythic Maori fairy folk. The cacophony of squawks and cries is almost audible. Tomorrow is the 70th anniversary of the end of the Warsaw ghetto uprising, the largest revolt against the Nazis extermination of the Jews during the Second World War. The revolt was put down but not before 13,000 Jews were killed in the ghetto during the uprising of which around 6,000 were burnt alive or died from smoke inhalation. Once the revolt was ended the remaining 50,000 residents were mostly shipped to concentration and extermination camps, in particular Treblinka.
