Eurovision 2013 Preview

Phil at A Very Public Sociologist - 3 minutes ago
I am virtually certain the 2013 Eurovision crown will be lifted by an Englishwoman. But it won't be Bonnie Tyler. It's the same old story almost every year. The UK's warbling ambassadors take to the stage and, invariably, come home with next to no points. In the first part of the last decade our sub-par performance was blamed on the fall out from the Iraq War. And as the decade wore on, the UK progressively fell foul of Gazprom-orchestrated block voting. Hmmm. Lack of success is laid at the feet of others who refuse to play fair - a typically British response you might say. But it'... more »

Is Trauma Counselling Actually Harmful?

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 9 minutes ago
It seems standard these days that survivors of traumatic incidents of man-made or natural disaster are quickly whisked into trauma counselling. It seems pretty intuitive - people are traumatized, people get counselling. A report from *The Observer* claims new studies show counselling can actually worsen mental health outcomes for trauma victims. *One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded hit on Boxing Day 2004. The resulting tsunami devastated huge swaths of the Indian Ocean coastline and left an estimated quarter of a million people dead across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India an... more »

But Would It Still be "Royal"?

This is what can happen when Conservatives become too full of themselves. Britain's Conservative government is openly talking about privatizing the Royal Mail, a crown corporation, and not just going private with it but selling it to offshore buyers. *[Britain's business minister, Michael] Fallon said the government would sell Royal Mail to sovereign wealth funds or other foreign buyers if postal workers' campaign against a flotation in London makes an initial public offering (IPO) on the stock market difficult. * *He said numerous overseas buyers had already expressed "significan... more »

US and European elites will intensify their efforts to destroy their fellow citizens' living conditions in the hopes of becoming even more insanely wealthy and powerful. They will succeed because the deluded, brainwashed voters in these countries will waste their time on contests between pea-brained right-wing nutbar parties and mewling, milquetoast "liberals" or "social democratic" stoops. The elites don't worry about the debts of their governments because they own that debt and that debt is used to justify the austerity needed to wring it out of the chump majority's pockets. There's nothing magical in reaching a record 400 ppm concentration of atmospheric CO2 but it's not symbolic either. It's a benchmark of how far we've come and where we're headed. It allows us to examine the changes in our environment, to our biosphere, for example that have occurred since we hit the 350 mark or the 300 mark that existed in our pre-industrial days. It also allows us to get a reasonably good idea of what is coming in the near future as greenhouse gas accumulations rapidly increase. The near future is what occupies the minds at the London School of Economics' Gra... more »

MAKING SENSE OF THE MAYHEM IN THE MIDDLE EAST

No one could be blamed for being confused about what’s happening in the Middle East these days. The affairs of the Middle East are as complex today as they ever have been. On the one hand we see Sunni Muslims fighting Shiite Muslims and on the other we see both Sunnis and Shiites wanting to get at Israel. And now, so it seems, we see Israel playing one side off against the other in a civil war in Syria while at the same time preparing to take on both. During my decade in the U.S., my tax returns got audited at least twice – both of them had to be fixed when I was already back in Europe and Obama was in charge (2009, for 2007); one was federal and the other one was a Massachusetts tax audit under Deval Patrick (related to 2006, done in 2010). Memo to my fellow Democrats: The enemy is not “the Republicans,” rather it is the Republicans AND Democrats “elected” to Congress and the White House. (I put “elected” in quotes because the elections are systematically rigged.) Here Paul Craig Roberts, a highly educated old-school Republican with on-the-job credentials in both Reagan’s cabinet and Wall Street, relates the work of other educated out-side-the-box thinkers who see the U.S. media for what it is: a propaganda machine that would make Goebbels jealous. Roberts finishes with a critic of Obama’s recent speech to the graduating class of The Ohio State University: “Outdoing George Orwell’s Big Brother, Obama said in public to a graduating class of a great university without shame: ‘You have grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as . . . some sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems; some of these same voices also doing their best to gum up the works. They’ll warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices.’” Well, tyranny is already here my friends. But thanks to the “presstitute” media, the majority of Americans are unaware that the U.S. Constitution has long since been shredded.

What Mattered This Week?

I don't know yet whether the IRS scandal will turn out to matter, but it certainly could. I wrote about it yesterday...we're certainly going to get investigations and Congressional hearings, at the very least, so I'll go ahead and say it mattered. And, yeah, I don't really think that this week's Benghazi fuss will turn out to have mattered. What am I missing? What do you think mattered this week?

In my part of town only two items on the ballot -- mayor, where Julian Casto is going to be easily re-elected against a handful of obscure candidates, and an open city counsel seat. That's been a fascinating race: the two major candidates (there's also an obscure one) have been spending lots of money and throwing a lot of mud. Fun! Since that describes almost all situations including the stopping of a bullet, the discovery is important and will certainly be applied even to cheap fibers. How about nylon stockings? You get the idea. I continue to look forward to a real space elevator cable using graphene and this work advances feasibility. *Simple Trick Turns Commercial Polymer Into World’s Toughest Fiber* *A materials scientist has created the world’s toughest fib... more »

Monbiot - You Can't Win on Climate Change Without First Vanquishing Plutocracy

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 1 day ago
*Guardian* enviro-scribe, George Monbiot, took the arrival of a record, 400 ppm concentration of atmospheric CO2 to deliver a few thoughts on our losing battle against climate change and what really stands in the way of our hope for progress. *"The data go back 800,000 years: that's the age of the oldest fossil air bubbles extracted from Dome C, an ice-bound summit in the high Antarctic. And throughout that time there has been nothing like this. At no point in the preindustrial record have concentrations of carbon dioxide in the air risen above 300 parts per million (ppm). 400ppm ... more »

I do not watch television. Unfortunately on Wednesday, whilst waiting to see a midwife in the International Health Service which has replaced our NHS, I had no choice but to watch the lies of the government as they were aired live. Alongside total piffle about 'saving the economy' by allowing the construction industry to concrete over every last blade of grass and acre of farm land (thus destroying any chance of self-sufficiency in food and making the colonised UK permanently reliant of the outside world to survive), the Prime Minister brought up the issue of Syria. How did Barack Obama become Monsanto’s man in Washington?

Shocked and disappointed is polite-speak and politically correct reaction. It’s baloney. Don’t you get it? Obama has never been on your side. He never deserved your trust. [image: AFP Photo / Jonathan Alcorn] AFP Photo / Jonathan Alcorn A California father of four died Wednesday shortly after a group of police allegedly beat him with batons as he lay defenseless on the sidewalk. Cops, before confiscating witness' cameras, also reportedly unleashed a canine unit on him. David Sal Silva, 33, allegedly resisted when police approached him to ask if he was who neighbors called about to complain of an intoxicated man in the area. The officers called for backup and, witnesses told the Bakersfield Californian, Silva was soon being beaten in the face... more »

How the Media Prevents Meaningful Discussion About the Environment

Mark Daniels at GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING - 1 day ago
Alex Pietrowski For a normal human being who understands the value of having clean air and water to consume, clean soil to grow food in, and of living in a habitat that can support life, it is frustrating to watch one environmental calamity occur, after another without ever seeing a mainstream, non-politicized conversation about the condition of our natural world. It seems that merely expressing concern over the direction the environment is going is enough to solicit a number of stigmatized labels, such as hippie, liberal, terrorist, downer, debbie-downer, slacker, tree-hugger, ... more »

Agenda 21 Redistributes Wealth Through Stealth

Julie Beal I’ve got a very important story to tell, so listen closely. Fed a diet of ‘alternative reactions to the mainstream news’, you probably won’t know about any of this, because it’s not had much of a public airing. The final push of Agenda 21 is to unite us all, mainstream and alternative alike – an end to the current system, and the institution of the ‘fair sounding’ new world order: green and caring. There have been several attempts to co-opt the Occupy movement to advance this agenda, which is neither green nor caring. In fact, it intends to exploit nature and people ... more »

In 2013, again, U.S. political leaders and the public appear disgusted with a public education system, but this sentiment has been with us since the Committee of Ten declared education inadequate in the 1890s. Our only full day in Paris was mostly wonderful and a bit frustrating. We started the day with a small breakfast in a cafe, as we like to do in Europe, as opposed to eating at the hotel. Watching local people come and go, I remembered how locals always stand at the bar for their little morning coffee, and how we did that every morning when we were in Italy. Later in the morning, after breakfast, I do the same, as one little breakfast coffee is not enough for my caffeine addiction! Sigma 17-70mm first pics =UPDATED=

My first non-kit lens was the Tamron 18-200mm aspherical zoom/macro, which for some strange reason I was never happy with. It performed as advertised and always took good pics. Yet, my other lenses (Tokina 100mm macro, Canon 50mm F1.8, Tamron 70-300mm) I have always felt are totally enjoyable lenses, but the Tamron 18-200mm left me cold. Dunno why.
