Here in California, the name Ahmanson makes people think of great works of

The Holy Trinity, a warship used to land the first Argentine forces in the Falklands War with Britain in 1982, has mysteriously sunk in an Argentine port
Arturo Puricelli, the defence minister, said the loss of the Holy Trinity
was due to "negligence in the best-case scenario, or an attack" aimed at
making the government look bad. He did not go into detail.
The destroyer, which was retired from active service in 2004, took on water
at the Puerto Belgrano naval base after a six-inch pipe burst, the navy
said.
The minister later said, however, that he was surprised that the ship sank
quickly while it was moored at the port.
First it started listing, he said. "So the breakdown must have been major,

C'Mon, Show of Hands. Who Watched the Debate?

Although I've left the Party I actually watched what was heralded a

What has the Soviet Union ever done for us? Well, to put it bluntly, the
USSR saved our asses. Between 1941 and 1945 three quarters of the armed
forces of the 3rd Reich were systematically ground down by the Soviet
people at almost unimaginable human cost. Compared to the horror Hitler
unleashed in the east, everything we officially celebrate about the Second
World War in Europe - the victories in the desert, the Normandy landings,
the doomed heroism of Arnhem, these were but sideshows to the bloody main
act that played out on the Russian steppe. That's why everyone with a

Today I decided to watch the Davis Cup doubles, Czechia vs Switzerland,

What Mattered This Week?
I'll kick it off with Scott Brown's decision not to run for MA-Senate. Not
a huge surprise, but it certainly could have gone the other way...and his

Syrian town lives under al Qaeda rules
In a small town in Syria's east, Islamist militants have taken unclothed

Members of the al-Nusra Front, al Qaeda's Syria affiliate, have also

Health Transparency 14: More on Senior Citizens Drug Price Discount
There will be another meeting, the 16th meeting of the DOH Advisory Council
on the Implementation of RA 9502 (Cheaper Medicines Law of 2008) next week,
February 13 at the DOH. I have told the Secretariat that I will join the

I think the new Department Order regarding the sharing of burden of the
mandatory 20 percent discount for medicines of senior citizens will be
shown to us members of the Council. Or has it been officially issued
already, I don't know.

Memphis Commercial-Appeal Continues to Ignore Reasons Behind Projected School Budget Deficit

No-money-down mortgages are back: Here we go again
It’s 100% financing—the same strategy that pushed many homeowners into
foreclosure during the housing bust. Banks say these loans are safer:
They’re almost exclusively being offered to clients with sizable assets,
and they often require two forms of collateral—the house and a portion of
the client’s investment portfolio in lieu of a traditional cash down
payment.
In most cases, borrowers end up with one loan and one monthly payment.
Depending on the lender and the borrower, roughly 60% to 80% of the loan
can be pegged to the home’s value while the remaining 20% to 40% can be

Spring will be sprung upon us right on schedule. Austerity does appear to
be in our future, after all, even though it has been proven not to work.
For society as a whole, that is. But if it works out for the plutocrats,
then it's all good. The poor can never be too thin, or the rich too rich.
But there's more important stuff to talk about. For instance, a pile of

Delhi gang rape, murder: Five accused plead not guilty
Five men pleaded not guilty on Saturday to charges they gang raped and
murdered an Indian trainee physiotherapist, in a case that led to a

A Reuters witness saw the men file into the court room with their faces

including murder, which carries a maximum penalty of death. They left after

North Korea threatens US over response to rocket launches
North Korea is threatening to retaliate for what it calls U.S. double
standards over recent rocket launches by Pyongyang and U.S. ally Seoul.
A North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman did not elaborate on what that

Washington says Seoul's rocket launch Wednesday had no military intent

This item is an informed observers bird's eye view of just how significant
the fracking revolution really is. We have had enough time now to get a

Coal Embedded Artifacts
Aging an artifact by the material it is embedded in is a serious mistake.
It fails to recognize that mining voids are not stable at all. This is
particularly true for coal. Any geological movement at all will cause such
voids to be squeezed out. This not much of a concern over a few centuries,
but over a few thousands of years it is reasonable that little trace is
left.
Recall that mining must leave pillars behind besides so there is never a
lack of material. Thus artifacts left behind in mining are readily embedded.
Since we have a working conjecture for modernism ar... more »
