Well, Marianna?

Sending a dangerous message
Every hour on the BBC News Channel since around 5pm yesterday a report has been broadcast by Nomia Iqbal where she says of Kyle Rittenhouse, ''But many Democrats are worried that by not being held accountable for killing two men and injuring a third, it sends a dangerous message. The Vice President said the decision reflected poorly on the justice system.'' Given that he was put on trial for murder and four other offences and found innocent on all counts, surely that *is* accountability? Of course, what she means is that he should have been found guilty. read more

* EVs in Norway are CHEAPER than regular cars* * Money talks: EVs have gone from making up less than 2 per cent of new car sales to more than three quarters* In the early 1990s, Norway began introducing the policies that would later drive an EV transition, including abolishing or waiving various taxes to reduce the up-front and lifetime cost of EVs. Strangely enough, one catalyst for this was the Norwegian '80s synth-pop band A-ha, otherwise best known for the song Take On Me. In 1989, two members of the trio bought a converted EV (range: 45km) and drove it around Norway, stubborn... read more

*Steve Weintz* *Submarines, NATO, Former Soviet Union* At the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union had so many hundreds of deadly submarines at sea that Western war planners willing to try almost any possible countermeasure, however goofy sounding. *Here's What You Need to Know*: By the time of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, the USSR controlled the largest submarine force in the world — some 300 diesel-electric submarines and a handful of nuclear-propelled models. NATO navies couldn’t keep up. “We simply do not have enough forces,” Vice Adm. R.M. Smeeton stated. At the heigh... read more
This Soviet Submarine Could've Been a Monster
*Mark Episkopos* *Akula Class, Eurasia* Soviet submarine performance was crippled by one glaring flaw: suboptimal acoustics. *Here's what you need to remember: *The results spoke for themselves: within the span of one attack submarine generation, the USSR went from a crippling acoustics disadvantage to being able to trade stealth performance blows with the competing U.S. *Los Angeles* class. The Akula class of nuclear-powered attack submarines is a formidable and remarkably long-lived showcase of the late Soviet Union’s single-minded drive to keep pace with—if not exceed—its Col... read more
