The Controversial Plan to Unleash the Mississippi
The idea of formal property rights in a flood plain has always been absurd, except it can take a thousand years to work out. A better system needs to deal in mobile land credits. Still a problem, but it is something the insurance industry can get around. What is sure is that levees will need to be changed out allowing active flooding all through the whole basin. If we build on flood zones with some wisdom in avoiding wash out zones, we can live with it all and work the land ownership to allow land credits so that land users can replace land lost to a shifting river bed. We ce... read more

* They really hate our guts* In the U.S., people eat more protein than they need to. And though it might not be bad for human health, this excess does pose a problem for the country’s waterways. The nation’s wastewater is laden with the leftovers from protein digestion: nitrogen compounds that can feed toxic algal blooms and pollute the air and drinking water. This source of nitrogen pollution even rivals that from fertilizers washed off of fields growing food crops, new research suggests. When we overconsume protein—whether it comes from lentils, supplements or steak—our body br... read more

* Many school districts across the nation are actively resisting curriculum transparency measures and bending over backward to hide the truth about what students are being taught* As parents sound the alarm on critical race theory and gender politics in the classroom, school administrators are doing everything in their power to gaslight them—telling them that these topics aren’t being taught and calling parents who question them racist or transphobic. The teaching of radical ideologies, including critical race theory, is becoming pervasive throughout the country, but nowhere is it... read more

Why Printed Books May Never Become Obsolete
The BIG reason is that a physical book is a permanent record in time and space and cannot be simply altered long after the fact. Better yet, the user can even annotate the text to assist his own researches. What is wtrong with all that? Folks who are serious about knowledge must always revere books as they have for thousands of years. After all those first books were often as not memorized and then spoken to a large audience. This is why dating is difficult for alod texts. We know the Illiad can be dated to 1179 BC yet the material is built around known oral traditions an... read more
Trusting the science
We first really saw this problem in the mining industry. It became more profitable to claim a huge successful mine discovery, than to actually locate a physical mine. At least to the thieves. The industry responded by rewritting the rules for disclosure and demanding acceptable protocols that could be repeated by a body of professionals. This had the benefit of tossing a lot of historical into the legal ashcan and made any of that work properly repeatecd. It also meant secrecy ended quickly and confirmation work became a thriving industry. Now try applying all this to the drug... read more
The Bizarre Bird That’s Breaking the Tree of Life
Aren't we having fun? It all sort of looks like a logical progression but it turns out not so. I have proposed a better approach. We need to focus on the actual macro components of out critter list and understand that the machinary and coding is available for each componenent to be expressed as needed. The linage of birds can express feathers. These easily progress to flight. what is not so important is species which represents family classes. which is almost immediately fuzzy on the edges. We need to accept the BIG picture and also accept just how conservative it all is. W... read more

Nicaragua… ‘Still, It Moves…’
At his Senate confirmation hearing, Rodriguez openly declared his intention to attack Nicaragua's economy and institutions. He also promised to seek to isolate Nicaragua internationally so as to obtain the release of criminals the US government paid via its non profit network to overthrow Nicaragua's government in 2018 and to try disrupting the country's national elections in 2021. A View of 1857
A drawing of Battle of Lucknow (30 July 1857) The year 1857 is as important in context of India’s history as the year 1947. In 1947, India got independence from the British; In 1857, India got rid of the last vestiges of Delhi’s Islamic order. The British used the term “Sepoy Mutiny” for 1857. For the nationalist philosopher and politician Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, 1857 was India’s first war of independence. In the Indian context, Savarkar was right. The Indian sepoys (most were Hindus from present day Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) thought that they were fighting the British, but what... read more

Is Society and Culture defined by National Borders?
The current trend of modern geopolitics is the invocation of a cosmopolitan global society.
