Canada's Safe Voluntary Isolation Sites Program
Lost in the news coverage of the Canadian election and the plethora of promises by the ruling Liberal Party is an interesting development which may portend a new technique for handling COVID-19 positive Canadians. Here is the announcement from the Government of Canada: *Notice that the Trudeau government keeps reassuring Canadians that use of these isolation sites by Canadians is "voluntary" and is being done to ensure that people living in crowded conditions have the ability to "self-isolate".* The government also provided some interesting quotes with this news release... read more

Poland Tried to ‘Merge’ Russian and NATO Tanks
*Charlie Gao* *Tanks, Europe* Does the plan make sense? *Here's What You Need to Know*: Poland is deciding what to do with its Cold War-era tanks. When the Cold War ended, the Polish Army inherited a massive fleet of T-72s. Most of these tanks were T-72Ms and T-72M1s, which were built in Poland beginning in the 1980s. In the 1990s, these tanks served as a valuable resource for Poland as modernization of the tank into the PT-91 “Twardy.” They also gave the Polish “Bumar” tank plant valuable experience in building their own T-72 upgrade, complete with domestic ERAWA ERA, passive ... read more
What Was the Point of Zelenskyy’s Visit Anyway?
*Melinda Haring* *Ukraine, * Mistakes were made by both Kyiv and Washington, but the bottom line is that both sides benefitted from the meeting and U.S.-Ukrainian relations are once again on firm footing. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s young telegenic president, just sprinted through Washington and many observers are struggling to make sense of the short visit. What was the point, after all? Partly prestige, partly purse. Zelenskyy had been pressing for an Oval Office visit for years, and he finally got it. The Problem with the Shadow Docket
My view is that the main problem with the "shadow docket" is that the Supreme Court is deciding consequential matters without full briefing and argument. This is a departure from past practice and, I must say, is little more than the current Justices being lazy. Let me give some examples. In the *Steel Seizure Cases*, President Truman issued his executive order in April 1952. A month later, the Supreme Court heard oral argument in the case. In the *Pentagon Papers *case, the Nixon Administration sought a prior restraint against publication in June 1971. Two weeks later, the Suprem... read more

The *New York Times* editorializes: The Texas law, known as SB 8, is the most brazenly anti-abortion law in the country. It bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, before many women even know they are pregnant. We Don't Need Facebook Authoritarianism: Casual People Spot Fake News As Well As Paid Fact Checkers
It has become common for political activists to demand that social media engage in bans and content warnings, because the other side is too stupid to know false facts from the real kind. In reality, everyone who takes their politics too seriously is inclined to believe the worst when it comes to others, and calling for bans is more of a patronizing way to pretend they care about discourse when they most just want to control it. This has led to companies like Facebook and Twitter either outright censoring some content or putting nonsensical fact checking warning labels on it. Here is... read more
