Who are the real Killers
arclein, Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
This is an excellent description of the natural ecosystem of a wild valley and how it naturally controls wolf populations. The big eye opener is understanding that human built roads and trails completely changes all that long before we strip out cut blocs. Do watch it. I do think that forest recovery helps reverse the worst impact, but not the road problem. This has to be betrer though out, but it certainlt necessitates culling excess wolves now wiping out hte herds. This is a really good insight that i had never seen shared. <iframe width="853" height="480" src="https:/...
Plastic Greenhouses Provide 35% of China’s Vegetables
arclein, Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
What limits greenhouses is labor availability. That will end soon enough with the advent of robots. I am stunned by the massive leap in per acre productiuvity. Even simple plastic sheets provide a ten times jump, while advanced systems get thirty times production. The future of agriculture will revolve around mob grazing in order to rebuild soils and greenhouse operations. Cash crops will rotate with cover crops to support livestock operations. Tree crops need to also be integrated with grazing operations as well. Again it all becomes practical wirth the advent of robots. ...
You Can Now Explore the Louvre’s Entire Collection Online
arclein, Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
Slowly but surely we are getting there. Ultimately we will have holograms as well in order to enjoy viewing in our Holodec. At least we are close to having a complete catalog of the Louve. From that it is a small step to see every museum in the world properly cateloged as well. Imagine living in an alpine community and whiling away hours inspecting a great art work. That will come soon enough. Heaven on Earth is easy to imagine. In time we will even use a worm hole to capture a hologram of the Mona Lisa just after it was painted and still drying. So a catelog is appropriate...
Fukushima plus ten
arclein, Terra Forming Terra - 21 hours ago
I personally no particular friend of nuclear power, but my reasons are not about its purported danger. This item makes it abundently clear that the danger is grossly overstated. Now we know that it can be messy but still can be handled. In fact we have actually done a good job of handling it. My problem is the uranium cycle itself. It produces by products that do not go away easily and we have not started. I do believe it is possible to use the thorium cycle to ultimately clean it all up. It will still take decades on the basis of our current understanding. I am still opt...

By Paul Homewood This week, the UK government announced it would be scrapping the beleaguered Green Homes Grant scheme. Impact of Covid within the Czech age-sex pyramid
Luboš Motl, The Reference Frame - 19 hours ago
According to the standard global Covid data, my Czech homeland is the world's #1 country above 1 million according to the "cases per capita" as well as "deaths per capita". Note that this 2017 pyramid shows the local minimum of the width in the age of 15-19 which means that the "decline of the population" looked worst around 2000 and the natality started to grow again. If we switch to our official national tables, the country of 10.7M (M is mega, a million) has detected 1.546M people as positively tested (14.4% of population) and 26,765 people have died with Covid so far (0.25% of p...
America's B-25G Bomber Was a Flying Tank in World War II
Sebastien Roblin, The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *B-25G, Americas* Germany and the United States both experimented with installing 75-millimeter guns usually mounted on tanks on ground-attack aircraft. *Here's What You Need to Know*: The cannon-armed bomber failed to prevail not because it could not be done, but because it was not the most efficient solution for the job. It’s an axiom in military aviation that for all their potential aesthetic appeal, combat aircraft are little more than weapons platforms meant to efficiently deliver deadly payloads on an enemy. However, size and weight constraints have alwa...
Just For Fun? What's the Point of Kel-Tec's PMR-30?
Charlie Gao, The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Charlie Gao* *Firearms, * The PMR-30 is not a gun that one should rely on to defend themselves in any situation. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *The PMR-30 can definitely be seen as a fun choice for plinking if one feels the need to step up from .22 LR. The .22 WMR is significantly more powerful, yet the PMR-30 by all accounts keeps the recoil low and the slide tracking fast for quick and easy shots on target. But the downside here is cost. The PMR-30 is one of Kel-Tec’s newer guns. A 30-round single action only pistol chambered in .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, the pistol ...
Why No One Is Happy With China’s Arctic Ambitions (Except China)
Kris Osborn, The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Kris Osborn* *China Arctic, arctic* Major global powers, including Russia and China, are increasingly vying for influence, access to resources and geographically significant strategic advantage in the Arctic. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *China also appears to be preparing for ice warfare in the Arctic by flying carrier-based J-15 fighter jets in free-air combat drills as temperature below -20C, a training move which indicates the country’s growing interest in exerting influence in the region. China has newly-built Polar-capable cargo ships, liquefied natural gas tankers...
Navy Submarines Could Soon Launch Surveillance Drones at Sea

*Kris Osborn* *Submarines Drones, * Such small drones, which could potentially launch as a mini-group, taking off from an attack or ballistic missile submarine once it surfaces from undersea missions or perhaps even as it lingers slightly below the surface. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *This technical maturation also means that mini-drones will, to a much larger degree, be computer-enabled and potentially even directed by AI. Levels of computer and mini-drone swarm autonomy are fast improving, paving the way forward for massive amounts of increased drone-to-drone communica...
Fighting ISIS Made NATO a Tougher Combined Fighting Force
Kris Osborn, The National Interest - 19 hours ago
*Kris Osborn* *War on Terror, Europe* Coalition partners conducted air attacks, performed reconnaissance missions, gathered intelligence and networked information across a combined force. *Here's What You Need to Remember: *These kinds of lessons could bring indispensable advantages in terms of learning and preparation. While the U.S. coalition enjoyed substantial air superiority in the war against ISIS, such air supremacy is by no means guaranteed in any major power engagement. Therefore, attacking ISIS could likely help the U.S. coalition refine tactics, techniques and procedu...
Close Call? When British Raiders Tried to Capture Nazi General Rommel

*Warfare History Network* *World War II History, Africa* [image: World War II History] The commandos wanted Rommel alive if possible, but the plan went awry. *Key point: *Few battles go as planned and Rommel was known to be a devious and slipperly leader. Here is how he got away. By early April 1941, Lt. Gen. Erwin Rommel’s German Afrika Korps, combined with Italian units, had cleared the British from Libya except for the seaport of Tobruk. The Australian 9th Division had fallen back on Tobruk, and General Archibald Wavell, commander of Commonwealth forces in North Africa, asked...
