A Vote For Trump Is A Vote For Radical Right Terrorism
A new poll by the *Military Times* of active-duty service members shows Trump job favorability underwater, just 38% saying he's doing a good job. Officers have the most unfavorable view of Trump-- 59.1% disapproving. As for voting... Biden's ahead among all service members by nearly 6 points. The Cycles of Constitutional Time (Oxford University Press, 2020)
Oxford University Press has just published my new book, The Cycles of Constitutional Time. Here is a summary of the book by chapter: *General Summary of the Book* America's constitutional system evolves through the interplay between three cycles: the rise and fall of dominant political parties, the waxing and waning of political polarization, and alternating episodes of constitutional rot and constitutional renewal. America's politics seems especially fraught today because we are nearing the end of the Republican Party's long political dominance, at the height of a long cycle of ... more »
True Story: In 1984, a Russian Submarine Collided With a U.S. Aircraft Carrier
*David Axe* *History, * Cold War collisions occurred more often than you think. *Key Point*: “The history of nuclear weapons is a history of near misses, accidents, potential catastrophes and cover-ups.” It was common throughout the Cold War for NATO and Soviet submarines to stalk surface ships and other submarines in order to gather intelligence and work out tactics for sinking the vessels in the event the conflict escalated into a shooting war. More than once, these undersea stalkings went awry. Collisions damaged ships and subs on both sides. In 1984, the Soviet *Victor*-clas... more »
Could the Navy Use Its Retired Aircraft Carriers for Target Practice?
*David Axe* *Security, Americas* The service has turned other retired ships into experimental platforms to test new defensive technology. *Key Point*: The Pentagon has ways to test anti-missile systems under more realistic conditions. The U.S. Navy should convert USS *Nimitz*, the fleet’s oldest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, into a test ship once the flattop decommissions in the mid-2020s. That’s the recommendation of Navy lieutenant Douglas Cantwell, who served aboard the 1,092-feet-long carrier. His advice has precedent. The Navy recently formed an experimental “Surface ... more »

"Waggle dance" route planning???
I did a double-take when I read this article yesterday. Solving route planning is among the most important problems in the transportation industry. The dilemma is often framed in context of the so-called traveling salesman problem: What is the fastest way for a salesman to make multiple stops in multiple cities? *. . .* Routific, like many companies, has turned to the natural world for solutions. Driving its proprietary software is a popular algorithm based on the famous foraging behavior of honeybees, in which returning bees perform a waggle dance in front of other bees in the hi... more »

Study Led by N.C. Botanist Shows Plant Extinction is More Common Than Previously Realized
When it comes to plant extinction, i am not particuarly convinced at all. It takes boots on the ground and real attention that is a learned trait. As a teenager, i had a manual titled weeds in Ontario. The first year i went scouting and found perhaps sixty percent of the subject plants over many days. By that experience I could expect that forty percent of those weeds were extinct in the area under consideration. That winter i reread the manual paying attention to the preferred habitat. The next summer, i literaly found all of those weeds. A number were in unique microhabit... more »

Elderly Being Stripped of Their Estates by Crooked Judges
Just when you have got your mind around the maturity of the child abduction industry along comes another exercise in free enterprise. The nursing home has become a default parking place for the failing elderly and the potential for exploitation and abuse is obvious. Throw in a handy estate and a non existent family and opportunity now exists. I do think that families largely prevent it all becoming a forest fire, but that is obviously not good enough. We do need to think in terms of public conservators with full disclosure. The estates are real and easily looted through fraud. ... more »
Hundreds of cattle enlisted to help wildfire prevention efforts in southeastern B.C.
I hope this is a good beginning. It is very promising and we need plenty of boots on the ground to fully master it all. If we apply cattle properly we can turn all woodlands into strategically treed savannas loaded with a mixed brush and grassland in which all waste is trampled into thye ground. This inhibits even grass fires and with mob grazing it becomes possible to plan in natural fire breaks as well. Certainly all our drylands need this. Sending the cattle in during the dry time smashes it all up over a larger area simply because the available fodder is meager. Better y... more »
