3000 to 1: Pretty good odds and why you shouldn't panic vis a vis coronavirus
If someone offered you a lottery ticket that the odds were 3000 to 1 that you'd win you'd buy it right? Well that's how to look at the new higher death numbers that President Trump's task force is talking about. They're saying that due to the mitigation efforts, shelter in place etc, instead of a million Americans dying we may see between 100K and 200K deaths. Given that there are 330,000,0000 Americans that means that your odds of dying are between 1 in 3000 and 1 in 1650. Hardly any reason to panic. What people are forgetting is that lots of people die in America every year any... more »

Covid "Pandemic" Brought to You by WHO Pandemic Definition Change- Numbers of Dead Too Low?
* Long time readers here may recall that just prior to the "swine flu pandemic" the World Health Organization changed their definition of pandemic. This change in definition that took place more then a decade ago, made it possible for the WHO to label the Swine Flu of '09 a pandemic. It wasn't. This change also made it possible for them to claim Covid is a pandemic as well. So far it's looking much like the swine flu pandemic, which didn't manifest and might explain why it's being claimed the numbers of dead are too low. We'll get to that in the second part of this report* *First the... more »

The Department of Defense is quietly asking Congress to rescind the requirement to produce an unclassified version of the Future Years Defense Program (FYDP) database. Preparation of the unclassified FYDP, which provides estimates of defense spending for the next five years, has been required by law since 1989 (10 USC 221) and has become an integral part of the defense budget process. US Is Losing World Superpower Status Over Failures On COVID-19
The US may be reaching its “Chernobyl moment” as it fails to lead in combating the coronavirus epidemic. As with the nuclear accident in the Soviet Union in 1986, a cataclysm is exposing systemic failings that have already weakened US hegemony in the world. Whatever the outcome of the pandemic, nobody is today looking to Washington for a solution to the crisis. The fall in US influence was visible this week at virtual meetings of world leaders where the main US diplomatic effort was devoted to an abortive attempt to persuade the others to sign a statement referring to the “Wuhan vir... more »
This Is Not A War: Pandemic Presents Opportunity To Rebuild A Sense Of Common Good
Just as previous wars on poverty, drugs & terrorism, a new ‘war on COVID-19’ is doomed to failure if a similar militaristic approach is used. We can only win if we restore the common good ruined by decades of neoliberal policies. When speaking about the current coronavirus pandemic and a concerted response to it, we should say unequivocally: “This is not a war.” It’s true that this will directly contradict the stance of many world leaders, who have declared a war on the virus. But by denying the necessity of a militaristic framing, we don’t turn a blind eye to how critical the situa... more »

Does the Church Belong to Caesar?
[image: undefined] I'm not sure which is more sad, that American pastors are being arrested for having public worship services or that most Christians seem to be perfectly fine with that travesty. While I always assumed the American “church” would fold at the first sign of persecution, it turns out that many have folded far easier than that. They didn't have to be beaten, shot, or tortured; they merely had to be commanded by the government to stop meeting; and most squeamishly complied. Getting Shit Done For the People-- A Guest Post By Montana Rep Tom Winter
During times of crisis we need our leaders to show up and fight for us. Not for corporations. Not for the powerful. For us, the people. Right now we are in the midst of a crisis far greater than any other we have seen in our lifetimes. Where are our leaders that are fighting for us? A number of governors and mayors are stepping up to the task to fill the void that the vacuum of federal leadership has left us. What do they all have in common? Not party identification. But rather a shared belief that nothing comes ahead of the health and safety of the citizens under their charge. Tr... more »

Women came out in Iraq and Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Peru, the Philippines and Malaysia. In some places, they risked beatings by masked men. Spain, Italy, Germany And Iceland On Course To Contain Their Outbreaks Of COVID-19 - With A Change Of Direction UK Can Too
Many countries are showing that the strategy of China, Singapore and South Korea also works in Europe - to aggressively find cases, isolate them, trace contacts and isolate them. They now need to keep this up. Italy is now down to a 4% increase per day - that’s a doubling time of 17 days. It’s down from a doubling time of just 5 days a fortnight ago. Italy looks to be well past its exponential rise, and even over the stage of a linear increase too. The cases per day are decreasing significantly. Doubling time of 17 days = [log(2)/log(1+4/100)] Doubling time of 5 days = [log(2)/log... more »

[image: d-c-stay-home-order-includes-jail-time-fines-for-violators-despite-efforts-to-depopulate-jail] Overzealous and overreaching efforts by the mayor of Washington, D.C., will likely do more harm than good as they could serve to increase the spread of COVID-19, not tame it.
Many Cry For Freedom ‒ A Quotation by M.N. Hopkins
*Many cry for freedom, but their voices go unheard. For those in power are quick to silence their voices. They meet behind closed doors and in reality do all that is possible to maintain the old outdated view of wealth and power. They speak one way in public and act quite differently in their formal and informal meetings. As long as this continues, mankind will continue to suffer needlessly.* *© M.N. Words from Washington DC
By Kathy Boylan (Washington DC) Greetings from the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker community. Regarding Coronavirus, I encourage everyone to watch Professor Francis Boyle's *interview *about the origin of the coronavirus. Using documents as evidence, he shows that the virus was developed at the germ-warfare facility at the University of North Carolina with funding from the NIH (DR. Fauci) and with money from China and the assistance of a Chinese scientist. Now Dr. Fauci and Big Pharma are "searching" for a vaccine which will make them millions. Or you might read "Covid-19: Further ... more »

Myles Cullen)] President Donald Trump Tuesday afternoon issued a tweet, which, if acted upon, quickly, could mark the beginning of a recovery—not only from COVID-19, but from the festering collapse of the American economy since the assassination of John Kennedy and the launching of the Vietnam War. Trump wrote: “With interest rates for the United States being at ZERO, this is the time to do... more »

The Effectiveness of Social Distancing on Pandemic Viral Transmission
Social distancing and self-quarantining are two concepts that the vast majority of people were not aware of prior to the current pandemic. As you will see in this posting, apparently these ideas that are new to us are not particularly new to the academic community. A recent early release Policy Review which is found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website by Min W. Fong et al entitled "Nonpharmaceutical Measures for Pandemic Influenza in Nonhealthcare Settings - Social Distancing Measures" looks at the evidence-based research into the effectiveness of social dist... more »
How It Starts
It is a recognised pattern for dictatorship to commence with emergency measures designed to combat a threat. Those emergency measures then become normalised and people exercising arbitrary power find it addictive. A new threat is then found to justify the continuation.
Could the Covid19 Response be More Deadly than the Virus?
The initial, alarming estimates of deaths from the virus COVID-19 were that as many as 2.2 million people would die in the United States. This number is comparable to the annual US death rate of around 3 million. Fortunately, correction of some simple errors in overestimation has begun to dramatically reduce the virus mortality claims.

The Cyberspace Solarium Commission: From Competing to Complementary Strategies
*Editor's note: This article is part of a series of short articles by analysts involved in the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, among others, highlighting and commenting upon aspects of the commission's findings and conclusion.* President Eisenhower’s 1953 Solarium Commission gathered top thinkers to weigh the merits of three logically distinct strategies to combat the Soviet Union; advocates of each position suggested distinct policies for U.S. arms development, doctrine and force posture. Today’s Cyberspace Solarium Commission drew from the story of Eisenhower’s 1953 commission a... more »

Muslims represent only around 1 percent of the American population, yet today they find themselves playing an increasingly important public role. For instance, two of the most prominent congresspeople are the first two Muslim congresswomen in American history, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. Like African Americans and Jews, Muslims are disproportionately Democrats. But what did they actually think and want in a comp... more »
The Coronovirus And Climate Change
The coronavirus is reminding us that it's foolish to go to war with Mother Nature. Tom Friedman writes: As Rob Watson, one of my favorite environmental teachers, likes to remind people: “Mother Nature is just chemistry, biology and physics. That’s all she is.” You cannot sweet-talk her. You cannot spin her. You cannot manipulate her. And you certainly cannot tell her, “Mother Nature, stop ruining my beautiful stock market.” No, no, no. Mother Nature will always and only do whatever chemistry, biology and physics dictate, and “Mother Nature always bats last,” says Watson, “and sh... more »

The concept is called "degrowth." It involve... more »
When Free-Market Prices Are Banned
One would think that basic economics and economic history, including a century of communist experiments, have demonstrated one thing: when prices are forbidden to adjust, shortages are created, the allocation of goods by government becomes a nightmare, and black markets develop. It would seem that especially in times of emergency, whatever government does, it should […] The post When Free-Market Prices Are Banned appeared first on Econlib.

Dr. Deborah Birx has been criticized for publicly flattering President Trump, but now it appears that she's a target of the right as well -- or at least of Jim Hoft's Gateway Pundit. Here's a GP post from last night, written by Hoft, in which Dr. Birx is attacked for the fatality estimates she's announced. Hoft, because he's an unreconstructed coronavirus denialist, thinks the estimates are way too high: *OUTRAGEOUS! The Challenges of Freezing the Economy
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - For weeks, with China already paralyzed and supply chains striking the first blow, the word recession remained outside the common lexicon: the debate still revolved around how much the coronavirus would subtract from growth. *COVID-19: Is It Academic Armageddon?* By RICHARD K. VEDDER First let me relate how the last week has had a revolutionary impact at my rather typical school, Ohio University. A couple weeks ago, the faculty at my university were furious at potential significant budget and staffing reductions resulting from declining enrollments and rumors that non-instructional/research units were only going to be lightly affected. To add to the intrigue and drama, the provost, ostensibly the university’s second-highest-ranked individual, was eased out of his job with almost no notice. Fast forw... more »

Economic Crisis Caused by Politicians and Bankers Being Blamed on Covid-19. How Convenient!
Jerry Day explains why the tests for coronavirus are worthless. The tests have been used on dead people to create false death statistics. Day points to the real crisis, which is economic, caused by debt and policies of the banking cartel called the Federal Reserve.
