"Maybe we're not supposed to be happy. Maybe gratitude has nothing to do with joy. Maybe being grateful means recognizing what you have for what it is. Appreciating small victories. Admiring the struggle it takes to simply be a human. Maybe, we're thankful for the familiar things we know. And maybe, we're thankful for the things we'll never know. At the end of the day, the fact that we have the courage to still be standing is reason enough to celebrate." - "Grey's Anatomy"

Megachile Pluto: Wallace's Giant Bee Was Never Extinct, It Was Just Hard To Find
Megachile pluto, Wallace's giant bee, is the world's largest, with a wingspan more than 2.5 inches. Though it should be easy enough to see, some had believed it was extinct because it hadn't been seen by western scientists since 1981. In January, a search team set out to photograph Wallace's giant bee and successfully did so, declaring in a documentary they have "rediscovered" the species in the North Moluccas, an island group in Indonesia. read more
A Blood Test To Measure Pain
One of the problems that led to both opioid and medical marijuana overuse has been that the notion of pain is subjective. If someone claims they are in pain, a doctor has no way to know how much of it is real and how much is psychological. A new test can identify biomarkers in the blood that can help objectively determine how severe a patient’s pain is. The blood test, the first of its kind, would allow physicians far more accuracy in treating pain—as well as a better long-term look at the patient’s medical future. read more

Trump Kim Meeting Broken Off - It’s Not Nearly As Bad As It Seems. More Of A Failure Of A Major Agreement Than A Major Disagreem
It is reasonably good news. Kim wanted the US to drop all sanctions in response for dismantling the publicly disclosed plant to make nuclear weapons materials. They weren't ready to do that. The US were willing to drop all sanctions in response to him completely denuclearizing but he wasn't ready to do that. He has a vision but not the same as the US vision but closer than it was a year ago. Trump talked about them knowing the country very well (including nuclear facilities that NK has not disclosed). And that he wasn't willing to do enough. Not a big disagreement. More that they... more »
1.26 Kilometer Diameter Asteriod 2010 GD37 Is NOT Expected To Hit In December 2019 - Warning Level 0, NASA Did Not Issue Warning
*Short summary - NASA did not warn about this - it’s only at warning level 0 and has to be 5 or above to be of public concern.* The best fit projected orbit takes it to somewhere out beyond Mars's orbit in December, and what's more, at the opposite side of the sun from Earth on that date. But based on only three and a third days of orbit. If it was going to hit then our telescopes should have spotted it by now. In particular, the new ATLAS early warning system has a warning time of a year for one kilometer or larger asteroids with 100% confidence. So I think we are pretty safe from... more »

The True Story of How Russia's Foreign Policy Process Evolved
*Valeriy Solovey* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] Moscow's foreign-policy behavior hinges on the practice of strategic patience. *The Kremlin’s Foreign-Policy Mentality* Russia has developed a clear-cut style in its foreign-policy mentality over the past ten to fifteen years. It is the prism through which Russian leaders view the outside world, the unwritten rules and motives for decisionmaking of which the Kremlin itself is not always even aware, as well as specific foreign-policy lines of communication. This foreign-policy style has taken shape because of the joint and sy... more »
Stability Now: Why Washington Needs the New START Treaty
*Alex Moore* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] America risks lapsing into an arms race that would jeopardize strategic stability at considerable fiscal cost. Hanoi Summit: Trump Hit a Bump On a Long Road
*Doug Bandow* *Security, America* [image: Reuters] Moving the Korean peace process forward requires that the president’s optimism be tempered by a large dose of realism; a nuclear-free Northeast Asia is unlikely. To the surprise of almost everyone, the Hanoi summit between President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un ended without an agreement. But the president noted that he made a friendly exit, not “an angry walk-out.” This was something often lost amid the hype surrounding the purported Trump-Kim lovefest: reversing seven decades of hostility inevitably will take time. Th... more »
OK: Voting With 60,000 Feet
Fans of market dynamics have a deep and abiding faith in the power of the podiatric plebiscite. When parents vote with their feet, schools will get better. Unions and minimum wage are not necessary, because if workers vote with their feet, employers will be forced to improve their offer. And yet, we have Oklahoma and teachers. The red flags have been numerous. The Oklahoma State School Boards Association has crunched some numbers. A massive increase in student population over the last twenty-five years. Spending far less per pupil than any states in the region, as well as the lowest... more »

SOUTHERN FRONTIERS OF THE RATIONAL IMPULSE: Narrative certainties of a failed tribe!
*THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2019The Times' sexism exposed:* How rational is our own liberal tribe? Consider the framework which has evolved from our tribe's desire to get rid of Donald J. Trump. Yesterday's major "get" from Michael Cohen involved a "hush money" payment. The payment went from Trump to Stormy Daniels, who was threatening to tell the world that she and Trump had consensual sex, on one occasion, in 2006. (Trump says they didn't have sex at all. Frankly, we weren't there.) We liberals! We keep saying that Trump "silenced" Daniels, as if that were a bad thing to do, and a... more »
