The deficit isn't just a federal government problem
We've spoken often in these pages about the federal government deficit (now standing at about $22 trillion), and how it's a crippling hobble on the entire country. It's so incredibly large that it can probably be repaid only by devaluing the US dollar through massive inflation, and/or repudiating part of the debt. Either step will damage the "full faith and credit of the United States". However, that's not the only deficit in prospect. Most of our major cities are in deep financial trouble. According to a recent analysis of the 75 most populous cities in the U.S., 63 of them ca... more »
Food packaging journal to retract paper by researchers in Thailand
A food packaging journal plans to retract a 2018 article by Thai researchers who tried to repackage (ahem) a virtually identical article of theirs, Retraction Watch has learned. That’s not particularly unusual; duplication, sometimes inaccurately called “self-plagiarism,” happens, as they say. What makes the case more interesting is the back-and-forth between the journal and the … Continue reading Food packaging journal to retract paper by researchers in Thailand
Germans start to pressure EU over Brexit
*An influential group of German economists has told the EU to break a Brexit deadlock, which could see the UK crashing out of the Eurozone on March 29th with catastrophic economic results for it and Germany.* *The whole world can see this two year old Brexit crisis is a Globalist plot patterned after the 2015 Grexit crisis with a fake narrative with a fake notion of "no alternative to a disastrous deal" to whipped through using a fake deadline.* *UK MP Mark Francois suggested the Globalist UK government is in league with the EU to cause a Brexit disaster for the Brits.* *"Meanwhile... more »
Is China Building a "Police State" or Countering Western-sponsored Terrorism?
*February 1, 2019* (Joseph Thomas - NEO) - Recent headlines across American and European news agencies have focused on the rise of a so-called Chinese "police state," specifically in regards to security infrastructure put in place in China's western region of Xinjiang. Articles like Bloomberg's "Inside the Vast Police State at the Heart of China’s Belt and Road" and the Economist's "China has turned Xinjiang into a police state like no other" depict Beijing's efforts as a "Muslim crackdown" and a "massive abuse of human rights." While such articles allude to the very real violence ... more »

Foxconn is flailing in Wisconsin (Insert your joke here.) UPDATED
In what may end up as the biggest economic development failure in U.S. history, Foxconn announced Wednesday that its $10 billion Wisconsin factory will not be a factory. Instead, the company says, it will still create 13,000 jobs, but these will be research jobs rather than manufacturing ones. I'll believe it when I see it. Accompanied by an almost $4.8 billion subsidy package as estimated by Good Jobs First (follow the link to the spreadsheet), the project was heavily criticized even before it was announced in 2017 (my take here and here). The massive subsidy helped normalize the i... more »

On The Modesty of Adam Smith
Portrait of Smith by John Kay, 1790Why did the British Enlightenment succeed in creating a better society, while the French Enlightenment led to the bloodbath of the French Revolution? I think, we can draw some inferences from a comparison between the character of the British philosophers and their French counterparts. The British philosophers of that period were modest and down-to-earth—they were not autocratic; they did not see themselves as intellectually and morally superior to other human beings; they philosophized extensively about the common human nature and the natural equa... more »

Russia Wants 50 New Tu-160M Supersonic Bombers (But There's A Problem)
*David Axe* *Security, * Having struggled for decades to keep fewer than 20 Tu-160s in the air, Russia could struggle to more than double the bomber force. The Tu-160M is impressive, but it might never enter service in large numbers. The Russian air force could receive the first of up to 50 new Tu-160M long-range bombers as early as 2021, defense minister Sergei Shoigu *announced* on Jan. 30, 2019. The air force wants 50 of the swing-wing bombers. But that goal could prove unrealistic for the cash-strapped Kremlin. The Tu-160 is not a new aircraft. The 177-feet-long, four-engine... more »

The U.S. Navy in late January 2019 confirmed the designation of its newest cruise missile, in the process clarifying its long-term plan for arming its growing fleet of warships. The plan heavily leans on one missile, in particular. It's the SM-6, an anti-aircraft weapon that quickly is evolving to perform almost every role the Navy assigns to a missile. GOLD
What i do want to share is that gold is a physical commodity and it is certainly not money. Folks who attack the idea of fiat currency always lean on gold as an alternative. It is not and it never really has been. The real problem with gold is that our ability to mine it is constrained at best. thirty years ago there was around 100,000 tons identified as above ground gold and that has now climbed to 187,000 tons because of a substantial expansion of global mining. The USA maintains that it retains around 10,000 tons which was declared after they closed the gold wind... more »
