On snazzy start up watch companies
My ongoing discussion with customer service, Kimberly. “I have the feeling you kids have never talked to your grandparents. Wouldn’t we all be saving a lot of time if the company just included instructions that are on the website with the nice packaging? Just a thought. I paid $300. That’s $200 more than I ever paid for a watch. The least I should get is instructions. I bought a $10 toaster at WalMart and have instructions in 3 languages. Happy New Year.” Norma
Advice on plurals, Ohio Farmer 8(3):23, January 15, 1859
Remember, though box in the plural makes boxes The plural of ox Should be oxen, not oxes. And remember, though fleece In the plural is fleeces, The the plural of goose Aren’t gooses nor geeces. And remember, though house In the plural is houses The plural of mouse Should be mice, not mouses. All of which goes to prove That grammar a farce is For where is the plural of rum and molasses? There are many versions of this poem on the internet, and most start with ox and oxen, and some include papoose, man, vine, etc. But this just shows people were having fun with it 160 year... more »

*Reuters:* *Cooperation best for both China and U.S., Xi tells Trump* BEIJING (Reuters) - History shows that cooperation is the best choice for both China and the United States, Chinese President Xi Jinping told U.S. President Donald Trump in a congratulatory message on Tuesday to mark 40 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The two countries agreed last month to a 90-day temporary ceasefire in their bitter trade war to give them time to hold fresh talks to try and end a dispute that has seen them level increasingly severe tariffs on each others’ goods. *"The Circle"* "With us the circle stands for the togetherness of people who sit with one another around a fire, relatives and friends united in peace, while the Pipe passes from hand to hand. The nation was only part of the universe, in itself circular… circles within circles, within circles, with no beginning and no end. Truth as the Foundation of God-Government in the Earth ...We are determined that sons of God will understand the necessity to *speak truth* as the rebuke to error, as the cutting down of that pride of the seed of the wicked, as the exposure of the lie of their conceptions and their political power base. "On Natural Diversity" by John (Fire) Lame Deer "Even animals of the same kind – two deer, two owls – will behave differently from each other. I have studied many plants. TRUMP IS OFF HIS INSULT GAME
*Happy New Year, everybody!* Really, Mr. President? This is the best you've got? In an exclusive interview aired during Fox News' "All-American New Year" special Monday night, President Trump suggested that only U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren's "psychiatrist" knows whether she thinks she can win the White House in 2020.... Fox News' Pete Hegseth asked Trump whether Warren really thinks she could make him a one-term president. "Well, that I don't know," Trump responded. "You’d have to ask her psychiatrist." Donald Trump's nickname insults have always been childish -- as far back as 20... more »

Making your online dollar stretch further
I've been a very satisfied customer at Amazon.com for more than twenty years, dating back to the 1990's. It remains my go-to source for many of my requirements, in areas where I know it offers value for my shopping dollar. Nevertheless, I've noticed over the past few years that in some areas, its prices are now higher than its competitors, who are also improving their online sales and service to a level that competes with Amazon for customer satisfaction. (I wrote about one such experience a couple of years ago.) Also, for some products, the much-vaunted "two-day free shipping"... more »

Tuesday Morning Links
This and that for your Tuesday reading. - Glen Pearson discusses the glaring gap between what citizens actually value, and what gets done by the governments they elect through distorted political systems: This past weekend, I wrote a column for the *London Free Press,* in which I stated the following: “What polls continue to reveal is that the coming generations of leaders and voters are increasingly bent on achieving social justice, environmental reform, gender equity, affordable housing, stronger communities, and a political order in line with those values.” ... Six Ingeniously Healthy Boosts to Add to Your Next Smoothie
A hearty green smoothie or other organic mix is hard to beat for nutrition and cleansing on its own, but you can always reach a bit higher. It’s easy to remember to buy the kale, the apples, the cucumbers, the spinach, parsley, cilantro and all of the other favorites for juicing and smoothie-making, but here’s a word to the wise: Don’t forget the extras! I was never a big smoothie drinker during my younger days, as they always seemed like a luxury item reserved for the wealthier Orange County, California set or similar “health nuts,” not for the every day person. 2018 is the first year with no violent tornadoes in the United States

House is officially sold
*Mary Beth, Karen and I outside of the Addams-Melman House in Bath some years ago* MB and I finished up the last of our work to move out of the house in Bath on Sunday. Some come to the New Year with great sadness and loss
A note on Facebook from our friend Sue in California. We’ve known her in person about 15 years, but knew of her years before that because she’s such a close friend of Bob’s sister, Debbie. Sue spent a week with us in Lakeside in 2017, and by the end of the week I think she knew half the people in town—she’s just has that kind of super personality. She and her first husband had 3 sons, and they lost one, Michael, late in 2018. She had to leave her home in California and go to Oregon to live and care for him after he was released (briefly) from the hospital. We were one of the ma... more »

Congress Should Change The Name Of The House Financial Services Committee To The Neoliberalism Committee

*Black privilege* *The Leftist article excerpted below gives a good account of an educational fraud but draws perverse lessons from it. When a small black school churned out fraudulent credentials and documentation for their students, even Ivy league institutions fell for it and admitted the students concerned. How come? The students were black and under the manic "all men are equal" doctrine that consumes the Left, the universities had a desperate need for black faces on campus. So they turned a blind eye to any shortcomings in the student or his documentation. Bla... more »

*Something else left out of the "models"* *A model with things left out isn't a model* Many mountains in Indonesia and neighboring Papua New Guinea consist of ancient volcanic rocks from the ocean floor that were caught in a colossal tectonic collision between a chain of island volcanoes and a continent, and thrust high. Lashed by tropical rains, these rocks hungrily react with CO2 and sequester it in minerals. That is why, with only 2% of the world's land area, Indonesia accounts for 10% of its long-term CO2 absorption. Its mountains could explain why ice sheets have persisted, w...more »
