Trump Announces Trade Negotiations/Agreements Picking Up Steam
President Donald Trump managed to hold a nearly hour-long press conference on trade agreements at the White House Monday, before allowing reporters to switch to questions on his Supreme Court nominee. The pace of U.S. negotiations of new trade agreements, replacing the unfortunate NAFTA and the failed Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership of previous administrations, is clearly accelerating. The President's immediate announcement concerned the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which he called "a new deal to terminate and replace the NAFTA Agreement," and "the biggest trade deal in A... more »

Aside from a 1972 sensationalized book on pornography that two-time cabinet minister in the Harold Wilson government Lord Frank Longford authored, based on a just completed fact-finding mission with Jimmy Savile and Cliff Richard,[1]Lord Longford and Sir Jimmy also held in common another strange, obsessive fascination - their creepily close friendships with arguably British history’s worst serial killers - Myra Hindley and her partner in crime Ian Brady.[2]Savile’s close ties with Brady dating back to their killing spree were kept mostly on the low while Longford’s public friends... more »

This and that for your Tuesday reading. - Laurie MacFarlane writes that flows of income and wealth have everything to do with bargaining power and social decision-making, rather than productivity or merit: (A)ggregate wealth is not simply a reflection of the process of accumulation, as theory tends to imply. It is also a reflection of the boundaries of what can and cannot be alienated, priced, bought and sold, and the power dynamics that underpin them. This is not just a historical matter. These days, the LHC has celebrated its 10th birthday. Almost no one has celebrated because, despite the Higgs boson discovery, there is a widespread feeling that the number of new things discovered by that collider has been disappointing. One of the laymen's questions that kept on reappearing was: Will the LHC destroy Earth? Will it eat all of us? It's disconcerting to see how conservatives tout ideas -- until other people implement them. Then they go on a tear and furiously reject them. Mitt Romney developed a health insurance program for Massachusetts, then conservatives branded it Obamacare and tried to get rid of it. The same is true of the carbon tax. Gillian Steward writes: Whatever the labels — carbon taxes, carbon pricing, or putting a price on pollution — they are actually conservative ideas. LAURA INGRAHAM: I'M SORRY, WHICH LYING TRAMP WAS YOUR EX?

Fox's Laura Ingraham, of course, has concluded that Kavanaugh's accusers are not to be believed, and so last night she interviewed Richard Vinneccy, an ex-boyfriend who parted with Swetnick on less-than-amicable terms. It's a free country, so Ingraham has every right to try to impugn Swetnick's integrity this way. But Ingraham would make make a stronger case if she could tell her Kavanaugh ... more »

How a volcano short-circuited Earth's ionosphere to trigger "Year Without A Summer"
The take home is that the Ionosphere is hugely affected and it is this that hammers the temperature. The charged plume spreads out throughout the shell formed by the ionosphere and does not come back down too soon. The lower dust likely stays down wind and all these were in the tropics. At least this polices up the mechanism we will face in the event of a large bang. Military Fraud in the JFK Autopsy
I had always questioned whether LBJ had a direct role in the initiation of the plot to eliminate JFK. I do not think so as the actual planning was CIA top to bottom. What he was, was a willing and critical participant as this revelation proves. He used his authority to run the body out to associates in the military for controlling the autopsy. We already knew that he had foreknowledge, but this also proves that he was well briefed as well and understood the mechanics of what was going down. His willing presence as the vice president made this all possible and controlled the... more »
Russia's MiG-31 Might Have a New Mission: Kill American Satellites
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, Europe* And we might have the photos to prove it. Earlier in September, a Russian Air Force Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound interceptor was spotted at the Gromov Flight Research Institute at the Zhukovsky airfield near the town of Ramenskoye, 40km southeast of Moscow, armed with what appears to be an anti-satellite weapon slung under its belly. The MiG-31, which has the “Bort” number 81 Blue, was photographed by a civilian aircraft spotter, both on the ground and in the air using a telephoto lens. However, according to sources, the photos drew the ire of the ... more »
Midnight Meme Of The Day!
*by Noah* Whether or not Brett Kavanaugh is guilty or innocent of anything, the Kavanaugh hearings have shown us the essence of the Republican attitude towards women, or "females" as Mitch McConnell loves to dismissively refer to them, once and for all time. To republicans, all is permissive, to the extent of it becoming outward policy. This is not the old behind the curtain stuff of JFK's time or Bill Clinton's time. This is open, public disregard. This is not just ending Roe v Wade to exert control. this is not just women should shut up, stay home and bake cookies. This is women... more »

Czech readers react to lynching of Prof Strumia
Last night, the prestigious Czech right-wing news server Echo24.cz joined the plurality of the world media that wrote about the cultural Marxist-McCarthyist lynching of the prominent CERN phenomenologist Alessandro Strumia. Here is the translation – so that you may get some Czech black humor and some idea whether the Czech taxpayers (who still contribute to CERN – but I already began to work on changing this situation) stand on the side of Strumia or on the side of the lynching mob. *Professor questioned discrimination of women in science, CERN ended cooperation with him* *Echo24,... more »

*S.C. Stuart, PC Mag:* *Here's Why Aliens Will Probably Come in Peace* *Ahead of World Space Week, we talk to SETI Institute chief Bill Diamond about the search for extraterrestrial life and why the idea of aliens coming to Earth to destroy us is 'absurd.' * Humans have been looking to the stars for millennia wondering if we're the only intelligent beings in the universe. A surprisingly good meal in a Texas backwater
While on the way to San Angelo today, Miss D. and I decided to stop for lunch at the town of Munday, Texas. SCOTUS Hears Oral Arguments in Weyerhaeuser Case
By Ted Hadzi-Antich “In *Weyerhaeuser*, the Fish and Wildlife Service determined that private property in Louisiana should be regulated as critical habitat for an endangered species known as the dusky gopher frog even though no dusky gopher frogs inhabit the property – and haven’t for decades. The land isn’t a habitat for the frog, nor does it meet all of the criteria for a habitat. That didn’t stop the Service from making its determination, thus devaluing the land at the expense of the landowner. Taking regulatory hubris one step further, the Service determined that the critical ... more »

Groundcherries Are Just The Start: CRISPR May Popularize A Food Future You Haven't Heard Of Yet
Few people have heard of the groundcherry because during legacy days of agriculture, when foods had to be optimized for various regions as easily as possible, it fared poorly compared to other farming crops due to undesirable characteristics, like falling on the ground and needing weeds. Though people who sell the organic process think a limited monoculture past is worth paying a premium for, the future may belong to the groundcherry and other orphan crops, thanks to biotechnology and the gene editing tool CRISPR, the successor to legacy organic processes like Mutagenesis and transg... more »
