Complaints from the Dark Side

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 12 hours ago
Remembrance of Interviews Past (from Downing Street). AM talking to a Gordon Brown mannequin. For those missing some *Andrew Marr Show*-related Sunday tomfoolery about bias, well, today's big 'scandal' (according to the louder, dafter parts of the Left on Twitter) has been the programme's decision to broadcast a pre-recorded interview with Theresa May in Downing Street rather than interview her live in the studio. Apparently, it's the pro-Tory BBC caving in to Robbie Gibb, the PM's ex-BBC director of communications. And, for good measure (and going wilder), it's also apparently ...more »

Student-Teacher Relations Are Central to Authentic Education

phila.ken at Schools Matter - 12 hours ago
From Wrench in the Gears March 3, 2018 Today I share a guest post from an elementary school teacher in Maine, a state in the vanguard of Ed Reform 2.0 implementation. Unless changes are made, this year’s freshmen are expected to graduate under the state’s new proficiency-based diploma requirements. In recent months, push-back against this new educational paradigm has grown substantially. Parents, teachers and students are finding standards-based education, a model that emphasizes technology-based education delivery, highly problematic. Here is one teacher’s perspective: “I love t... more »

Iraq’s Oil Revenues Slightly Dip In February 2018

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 12 hours ago
After reaching the highest oil profits in more than two years, Iraq’s revenues dipped a bit in February 2018 due to a slight decrease in exports and the price for its crude. In February, Iraq’s Oil Ministry exported an average of 3.426 million barrels a day. That was down from January’s 3.49 million, but still above last year’s mark of 3.309 million barrels. The decrease was due to bad weather in southern Iraq, which often delays tankers docking and pipeline leaks. The country’s output always fluctuates. Iraq’s exports could have been higher but political disputes with the Kurd... more »

One of the examples of BBC bias used by Stephen Glover in his recent column *I say this in sadness, but unless the BBC gets its act together it may not be here in 15 years *was the BBC's Max Mosley coverage (or the lack of it): The third example of bias came yesterday after the *Mail* revealed how Max Mosley supported the revoltingly racist far-Right in the early Sixties, and apparently concealed this fact when successfully suing the now defunct *News of the World* in 2008 for describing his orgy as Nazi-themed. Is Trump Afraid Of Axl Rose? Will Kirsten Gillibrand Attack Before Trump Does?

I'm guessing Axl Rose hasn't taught AC/DC how to do this one yet... but maybe he should. It was the final song on *Chinese Democracy* (2008), although Axl had been working it for nearly a decade. Axl wrote it with Robin and Paul. So it's not he doesn't know anything about prostitutes. He knows one when he sees one, that's for sure. co2islife at CO2 is Life - 1 day ago
The Maldives has always been the poster child for Climate Alarmists. They have claimed that rising sea levels would wipe this island nation from the map. The problem is, the Maldives aren’t sinking, sea level isn’t rising in the Maldives. So right off the bat, something has a very bad odor. Now we find that … Continue reading "If Climate Change is Really a Threat, Why Would China, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Abu Dhabi Invest Billions in the Maldives"

North Korea's 105th Armored Division: Kim's Most Powerful Weapon to Win a War

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Asia* Could this be the DPRK's best chance to stike into the heart of South Korea? In any future war on the Korean Peninsula, U.S. and South Korean forces would encounter a familiar foe: the Korean People’s Army (KPA) 105th Armored Division. Equipped with North Korea’s most modern tanks and armored vehicles, the 105th Division’s mission is to rapidly exploit any breakthrough in the lines and drive deep into the heart of South Korea. The division traces its lineage to the first Korean War, when its Soviet-made tanks panicked ill-prepared U.S. troops an... more »

Turkey Wants F-35Bs to Field an 'Aircraft Carrier in Disguise'

Zachary Keck at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Zachary Keck* *Security, Middle East* If Turkey’s new plan sounds familiar, that’s because both Japan and South Korea have been working on similar plans in recent months. Turkey is the latest country to consider buying F-35Bs in order to field an “aircraft carrier in disguise.” The Turkish newspaper *Hurriyet Daily News* reported the news on February 27. According to the paper, along with the 100 F-35As that Turkey is planning on buying to replace its F-16s, a fleet of F-35Bs are also “planned to be procured in line with Ankara’s growing interest in strengthening its naval forc... more »

Why Putin Is Obsessed with America's Missile Defense

Eric Gomez at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Eric Gomez* *Security, Americas* Practically all of the nuclear weapons systems mentioned in Putin’s speech, old and new, were justified as a response to the steady buildup of U.S. missile defense since it withdrew from the ABM Treaty. In a speech before Russia’s Federal Assembly, Vladimir Putin unveiled several new nuclear-weapons systems. The speech comes less than a month after the release of the Trump administration’s Nuclear Posture Review, which named Russia as a primary strategic competitor of the United States and called for new low-yield nuclear weapons to counteract Ru... more »

Russia's Navy Might Be Modernizing—But It's Overstretched

Lyle J. Goldstein at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Lyle J. Goldstein* *Security, Eurasia* Putin might well be counting on new nuclear weaponry to balance a perceived deficit in Russian conventional forces. And Moscow's naval situation makes that point clear. President Vladimir Putin’s speech on the first of March revealed a whole panoply of new nuclear capabilities, from cruise missiles with nearly unlimited range to unmanned undersea vehicles also operating with extraordinary range, together with unprecedented speed and depth capabilities. While the speech was no doubt intended to burnish his reputation for toughness ahead of ... more »

Russia vs. America: Which Army Has the Best 'Big Guns'?

Charlie Gao at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Charlie Gao* *Security, Europe* Who has the best artillery? Artillery has always been considered to be the primary killing force in ground combat. As the United States and Russia increase their defense budgets for the new cycle of military modernization, artillery systems are also being improved and revised. The newest American system is the 155mm M109A7, which is slated to slowly replace the M109A6 “Paladin” that forms the bulk of American self-propelled artillery. In the Russian Ground Forces, the Cold War vintage 152mm 2S3 is still in service, though it is flanked by the mo... more »

In 1945, the British Air Force Tried (and Failed) to Assassinate Hitler

*Warfare History Network* *History, Europe* So what happenned? Adolf Hitler believed in *Vorsehung* (providence). The German leader felt that if anything was going to happen to him, such as assassination, there was nothing he could do about it. He had been selected by fate to achieve something great; he would not die, either by accident or assassination, until he had fulfilled that God-given mission.Time and time again in the past, providence, not planning, had taken care of him. The Real Purpose of the Foreign Emoluments Clause

Gerard N. Magliocca at Balkinization - 1 day ago
Undoubtedly you are aware that the President is being sued for allegedly violating the Foreign Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. While I do not believe that the plaintiffs in these cases have standing, the theory behind the litigation is that the President's business interests are receiving foreign benefits because of his status as President. In other words, foreign governments are trying to bribe him by staying at his hotels, renting out his properties for events, and so on. Then there is the related claim that domestic competitors are being harmed by this influence peddling (... more »
