The Chinese Want Robot Warships
*D3000* This crudely made model of the D3000 gives us a vague idea of the concept: a trimaran tumblehome hull, with armament that includes autocannons and anti-ship missiles, as well as launching tubes for small unmanned underwater vehicles, torpedoes, or mines. by78 Popular Science: *With the D3000, China enters the robotic warship arms race* *It's triple-hulled, autonomous, and armed.* At the turn of the 20th century, the great powers competed to build the modern-day battleship. Today, a new arms race may be breaking out, this time with robotic warships. The D3000 is a 98-foot... more »
American women died in Vietnam, too

There are more than 58,000 names on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington, D.C. Eight of them belong to women. Derek Key, CC BY-SA Visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., it’s easy to overlook the names of eight women inscribed on the wall’s haunting slabs of black granite. These eight are hidden figures, dwarfed by the more than 58,300 names of men who died in service or who remain missing in action from the Vietnam War. All military nurses, the women died of shrapnel wounds, in helicopter crashes or of illness while ministering to the wounded. Beca...more »

Anti-Gay Zealots Like Doug Chin Shouldn't Be Running For Congress As Democrats
Most of us outside Hawaii who have heard of Doug Chin know him as the courageous Attorney General-- appointed, not elected-- who has gone after Trump. Yep, that's Doug Chin *preaching* like an insane zealot, screaming his homophobic rantings-- "God is right; your family is wrong." Holy Moly! Relations between Russia and the EU are stuck in a “deep and acute” crisis and are unlikely to improve until President Vladimir Putin leaves office and the conflict in Ukraine is resolved – events that could be many years away, the outgoing EU ambassador to Moscow has said. Will China and Russia Make U.S. F-22 and F-35 Stealth Fighters Obsolete?
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * As Russia and China continue to improve their air defenses, stealth is increasingly becoming a perishable commodity. While stealth technology will not become obsolete per se, the U.S. Air Force and particularly U.S. Navy official have said that low observables will have to be supplemented with electronic warfare. Indeed, Air Combat Command believes that the next-generation Penetrating Counter Air (PCA) replacement for the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor will likely *make extensive use of electronic warfare*. But tomorrow’s electronic warfare systems will ... more »
Stealth Showdown: America's F-22 Raptor vs China's J-20 (Who Wins?)
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, Asia* Imagine this. *Perhaps the most compelling evidence that would point to the J-20 being optimized for the strike role is the fact that the airframe is enormous but has relatively small wings. It’s also seems to have huge weapons bays. While such a configuration works well for a fast supersonic strike aircraft, it’s not ideal for an air superiority fighter that needs be able to sustain high rates of turn.* The People’s Republic of China is likely to be the only peer level competitor to the United States over the next fifty years. *Robert Farley* *Security, Europe* And millions paid the price for it. *Naval combat does not normally loom large in histories of the War in the East. Mike Philbin - Introversions & Dichotomies - first art sale of the year
It was my first exhibition of works in this recent abstract style, chosen to exhibit in this year's Oxford Arts Society Exhibition. As the show finishes today, I was planning to go pick up the painting(s) from the gallery this evening. Earlier today, I recieved a phone call from Lucy Stopford telling me I don't need to go collect. The buyer wanted to know 'how much space' should there be between each painting. I said NONE, let them kiss - like the image of the two canvases, above. A cheque's on its way, and surely this bodes well for my forthcoming December-January show at Blackw... more »

"Illusions and Seagulls"
"There is a family of us who have this yearning for a kind of excellence that we can manifest every day of our lives, a family who wants to believe we're not pawns, we're not victims on this planet, that knows we have the power within us here and now to change the world we see around us!" "The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof." - Richard Bach, "Illusions: The Adventures of A Reluctant Messiah" "If our friendship depends on things like space and time, then wh... more »

Oct. 1: The Sunday Sermonette
Long ago, when the world and I were young, I often preached at a mission church in Montreal's red light district. Many of the hookers and gamblers of the district would come; and I, at seventeen, would tell them all about life. Today, inspired by the gawdawful faith column in the irving press, I feel a need to return to the pulpit. _________________________________________________________ This year, the Christian churches celebrate some 2000 years of preaching whatever is socially acceptable to whoever the powers are in any given country. I am reminded of a man I knew who was a part... more »

"A Gathering of the Tribe"
"A Gathering of the Tribe" by Charles Eisenstein "Once upon a time a great tribe of people lived in a world far away from ours. Whether far away in space, or in time, or even outside of time, we do not know. They lived in a state of enchantment and joy that few of us today dare to believe could exist, except in those exceptional peak experiences when we glimpse the true potential of life and mind. One day the shaman of the tribe called a meeting. They gathered around him, and he spoke very solemnly. "My friends," he said, "there is a world that needs our help. It is called Earth,... more »

Here are the things that must be considered: Where are you living? What are you doing? What are your relationships? Are you in right relation? Where is your water? It is time to speak your Truth. Create your community. Be good to each other. And do not look outside yourself for the leader. This could be a good time! There is a river flowing now very fast. This website has hosted thousands of discussions over the years on how to preserve and increase wealth. But what's it all for? Every so often, it's useful to pull waay back to look at the big picture. To re-examine the Why? underlying our plans and aspirations. Most of us don't do this very often. We usually only do so after life throws us a curve ball - often some form of tragedy or crisis ... more »

Catalan Independence: 5 Things to Think About
Catalan independence can be good or bad - it depends on the Catalan people to make it good, or else it likely will be bad. *October 1, 2017 *(Tony Cartalucci - LD) - Headlines and commentary across both Eastern and Western media have mainly focused on the Catalan independence referendum and the actions of Spanish police and the Spanish government's attempts to disrupt polls. A Second Korean War Will Not Be Like The First One
South Korean army's K-2 tanks take part in a live-firing drill at a fire training field in Yangpyeong, South Korea. Reuters *Michael Peck, National Interest*: *5 Reasons Why a 2nd Korean War Won't Be Like the First* If a Second Korean War were to erupt tomorrow, there is one thing we can be sure of. It won’t be like the First Korean War of 1950-53. It's always reassuring—and usually fatal—to assume a conflict will be like its predecessor. France lost in 1940 because they assumed World War II would be fought in the trenches like World War I. Israel almost lost in 1973 because they... more »

Fish and Whale Populations Collapsing...Global Fishing Moratorium Needed....Anybody Out There Listening????
*BC Resident Killer Whales are on Verge of Extinction* *Starvation seen as Likely Cause* When early European explorers like John Cabot and Jacques Cartier came to Eastern Canada, they commented on the abundant numbers of fish, particularly the cod of the north eastern coast of North America. They wrote that the fish were so plentiful that huge schools of cod would push in solid masses against the sides of their sailing ships. Even before the first explorers, for centuries, fishermen had been coming from Portugal and other European countries to fish the waters off the coast of Ne... more »

Stares, The Hill*: *Secret talks can cool tensions between US and North Korea* The confrontation with North Korea is accelerating toward a potentially catastrophic climax. Neither side in its right mind wants to start a nuclear war, but this is where we are headed if both Washington and Pyongyang do not appreciate how the growing momentum of the crisis could soon exceed their grasp. Immediate steps need to be taken to de-escalate tensions and lessen the risk of miscalculation and inadvertent conflict. North Korea’s headlong pursui... more »
THE CHARACTER ASSASSINATION OF SAN JUAN'S MAYOR BEGINS
The right has declared war -- not against ISIS or Kim Jong Un, but against a mayor in a U.S. territory. The conservative media is fully mobilized.
