Tonight's Presidential Election
*WNU Editor:* The girlfriend and I decided to go out tonight .... to skip the U.S. election coverage. So we drove to a subway station not far from where I live, and from there we made our way to our favourite french restaurant in Old Montreal with the expectation that we would probably be the only ones there. We were right. In a place that is always packed, it was only 1/5 occupied. Naturally .... the service was great, the food and wine was superb .... and we had no idea on what was happening tonight (we left our cell phones at home on purpose). After our meal we then took a walk ... more »

Latinos Tried Saving America: They Sent Their Best-- Muchos Gracias, Hermanos y Hermanas
There's a weird story about Glenn Beck in the *New Yorker* this week, how watching Michelle Obama's speech mentioning how Trump treats women was a come to Jesus moment for him. We'll have to wait and see how long that lasts. Decency is a fresh palette for Beck, who, at Fox, used to scribble on a chalkboard while launching into conspiratorial rants about looming Weimar-esque hyperinflation, Barack Obama’s ties to radicals with population-cleansing schemes, and a Marxist-Islamist cabal itching to take over America. He once described Clinton as “a stereotypical bitch” and accused Ob... more »

Election Night 2016
As of 9:15 tonight, this is the way the electoral map looks on the *NY Times*' website and it's pretty typical for a general election. The Republican crook is winning big in the redneck and flyover states while the Democratic crook has won a few wealthy east coast states. Hillary very briefly pulled ahead of Trump by two electoral votes by winning 20 in her native Illinois. Not very ironically, Trump lost in his home state of New York. But as it stands now this minute, Trump's ahead overall 130-97 electoral votes with California's vote-rich 55 still very much in play. It ... more »
Results I
This morning at 10:30 I walked down the hill to my polling station and there was a line, first I ever saw there, but that was more because of an illiterate poll worker who was non-functional than because of voter enthusiasm per se. The whole process from arming my home alarm to disarming it took 19 minutes-- and that was a tough walk back up in the hill in the hot sun. It's 85 degrees and sunny, different from how I remember November voting days in NY and San Francisco! Meanwhile Trump was working to disenfranchise American citizens of Hispanic origin in Nevada, while the Repub... more »

By American Kabuki Well its the end of the silly season. Aren't you relieved? Did I vote? No, last time I voted was for Obama in 2012, before I knew all these countries were corporations and I was simply participating in an ritual of consent for the CEO of the US Corp. I was seriously disabused of that notion with the facts. Rituals die hard, ask any former religious person. Let me start by saying it's not a conspiracy. It's just that all the Beltway types live in the same bubble. *The Clintons help Trump celebrate his wedding to Melania. Will they laugh like this again? Of course, but not where you can see them, for a while at least. * *by Gaius Publius* A couple of election notes from Corey Robin, plus a bonus note from me: *Blaming the Left* This is something we all anticipate: *1.* As the polls tighten, there’s a lot of left-blaming and left-fretting among Clinton supporters. That fits with a long-standing psycho-political syndrome among liberals of attacking the left—a syndrome in which the left often plays its own not so healthy part. But there’s l... more »

A young man from Finland is now in eastern Ukraine reporting on the still on-going US-NATO war against the citizens of the region (Donbass). The big question is once Hillary Clinton is selected to run the declining American empire what will the US do about the military stalemate now in eastern Ukraine? As we know the US has been using the war in Ukraine to destabilize and demonize Russia. There is no doubt in my mind that Clinton intends to intensify this dynamic so one would expect to see an escalation of the US backed Kiev regime's attacks on the Russian speaking citizens of ea... more »

A Crime Syndicate Head, Foreign Agent, Harridan President?
Hillary Clinton is the worst major party presidential candidate in my lifetime, with the possible exception of Obama. The first election of Obama at least came with a built-in excuse for those of a lame mind and irresponsible nature. Those who make no real effort to learn about the candidate for whom they vote could claim him as an unknown. Of course they could not make the same excuse in 2012. Hillary is a decades long known collectivist, personal power luster, and criminal and crime abettor. She is now known also as the thief of government e-mails, a paid (through the Clinton... more »
Announcement of my interest in becoming US Secretary of Education
Stephen Krashen November 7, 2016. According to the BAT organization's poll, I was one of those mentioned as a possible candidate for the position of Secretary of Education. If appointed, here is some of my platform. Most of the ideas are not my own, and I will supply full documentation if my candidacy develops. Focus on poverty By far the most consistent and powerful predictor of school achievement is poverty. In fact, when researchers control for the effect of poverty, American students rank near the top of the world on international tests. The current view of the US Departme... more »
"A Look to the Heavens"
"It is the largest and most complex star forming region in the entire galactic neighborhood. Located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy orbiting our Milky Way galaxy, the region's spidery appearance is responsible for its popular name, the Tarantula nebula. This tarantula, however, is about 1,000 light-years across. Were it placed at the distance of Milky Way's Orion Nebula, only 1,500 light-years distant and the nearest stellar nursery to Earth, it would appear to cover about 30 degrees (60 full moons) on the sky. *Click image for larger size.* Intriguing detai... more »
Chet Raymo, "Rules For Believing And Thinking"
*"Seven Rules for Believing"* by Chet Raymo "I was reading again recently Richard Dawkins' letter to his daughter Juliet on her tenth birthday, urging her to avoid tradition, authority and revelation as reasons for believing. Ask for evidence, he writes- evidence that is at least potentially available to all. Good advice, and I wouldn't mind passing on Dawkins' letter to my own children or grandchildren. But there is further advice I would add. A week or so ago I proposed here Four Rules of Rational Thinking, and had some savvy comments by readers. Let me now propose Seven Rules of... more »
"It Is Very Strange..."
"Life is a strange thing. Why this longing for life? It is a game which no man wins. To live is to toil hard and to suffer sore, till old age creeps heavily upon us and we throw down our hands on the cold ashes of dead fires. It is hard to live. In pain the babe sucks his first breath, in pain the old man gasps his last, and all his days are full of trouble and sorrow; yet he goes down to the open arms of death, stumbling, falling, with head turned backward, fighting to the last. And death is kind. It is only life and the things of life that hurt. Yet we love life and we hate death... more »
The Poet: William Stafford, "You Reading This, Be Ready"
*"You Reading This, Be Ready"* "Starting here, what do you want to remember? How sunlight creeps along a shining floor? What scent of old wood hovers, what softened sound from outside fills the air? Will you ever bring a better gift for the world than the breathing respect that you carry wherever you go right now? Are you waiting for time to show you some better thoughts? When you turn around, starting here, lift this new glimpse that you found; carry into evening all that you want from this day. This interval you spent reading or hearing this, keep it for life. What can anyone give yo... more »

Tomorrow's Notable California Congressional Races-- Some Democrats Aren't Worth Voting For-- And Some Are Fantastic
Tomorrow's the big day here in California. Let me remind you, that all of our endorsements for the 17 statewide propositions are here. There are no Republicans worth voting for anywhere in the state-- not for any office. In the U.S. Senate race, Kamala Harris is a better bet than Blue Dog Loretta Sanchez and in the congressional races, the Democrats I would never consider voting for are corrupt New Dem Ami Bera (who should be in prison instead of his poor fall-guy father), Blue Dog Jim Costa, New Dem Ro Khanna, coked-up New Dem Pete Aguilar, New Dem Isadore Hall, Blue Dog Lou Corr... more »
Latest Polls Show Bernie Sanders Would Win Election By A Landslide
Last minute polling data shows Bernie Sanders would defeat Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and win the election in a landslide if he was on the ticket. Aggregated data from hundreds of nationwide polls have delivered Clinton and Trump the lowest favorable ratings of presidential candidates since polls began 30 years ago. Clinton’s favorability rating has slumped to 41% among all eligible voters, according to the HuffPost Pollster, while Trump has inched up to 38% in the past week. Sanders meanwhile has surged to his highest favorable rating of the election season. His 54.1% favora... more »
Democratic Electoral College Voters Refuse To Vote Hillary
Two electoral college voters have publicly announced that they will not be giving their vote to Hillary Clinton on election night. Even if Hillary wins Washington state, two Democratic electors say they refuse to give the “criminal” former secretary of state their votes. “No, no, no on Hillary. Absolutely not. No way,” said Robert Satiacum, a member of Washington’s Puyallup Tribe. “I hope it comes down to a swing vote and it’s me,” he said. “Good. She ain’t getting it. Maybe it’ll wake this country up,” he added. Another Democratic elector from Everett, Bret Chiafalo, told the Se... more »
Hillary Clinton Cancels ‘Victory’ Fireworks On Tuesday Night
Hillary Clinton has cancelled a celebratory fireworks display scheduled on election night, fuelling rumors that her campaign are bracing to lose the election. Clinton had scheduled to hold an indulgent fireworks display over the Hudson River, but abruptly cancelled it this week in lieu of tightening poll numbers and new WikiLeaks scandals coming to light, Your News Wire has learned. “They do have a permit for fireworks, but at this point we believe the fireworks is canceled,” Tommy Galati from the NYPD said at a press conference. When Galati was asked why the fireworks were cancel... more »
Fixing the Poison of American Politics - Cleaning Up Redistricting
I'm writing this the night before Election Day in the United States. Once the votes are tallied, a sizable percentage of the population will be convinced that the country is doomed. Cards on the table, I'm definitely a partisan. Though a fairly liberal Republican in my 20s and early 30s, I've transitioned to liberal Democrat. That probably puts me in a minority of people who voted for both Bush and Obama. Basically, as I've grown older I've come to the conclusion that not everybody gets an equal shot and some people have horrible luck - whether in their parents, their genetics, thei... more »

Powerful Disruptive Solar Flare Set To Hit Earth On Election Day
Scientists have issued a warning that a powerful solar flare (or CME) is scheduled to strike the Earth on election day, causing potential electrical problems. According to Space Weather Live, “A coronal mass ejection (or CME) is a giant cloud of solar plasma drenched with magnetic field lines that are blown away from the Sun during strong, long-duration solar flares and filament eruptions.” This particular CME has the potential to disrupt satellite control, interfere with radio and television stations, and even power down the electrical grid. Canadian Navy Find Long Lost Nuke
Canada have deployed their Navy to investigate a possible “lost nuke” in the waters off the coast of British Colombia. The Royal Navy were deployed this week to investigate the nuclear bomb which is believed to have been dumped into the sea when an American B-36 bomber crashed in 1950. The discovery comes just days after residents in northern Canada reported hearing strange humming noises emanating from the sea floor which the military were sent in to investigate, but as yet no official explanation has been given. "The Fed: Shackled to a Maniac"
*"The Fed: Shackled to a Maniac"* by Bill Bonner "Here’s the latest from the Fed. It just completed a two-day policy meeting and wrote in a press release: ‘The Committee judges that the case for an increase in the federal funds rate has continued to strengthen but decided, for the time being, to wait for some further evidence of continued progress toward its objectives.’ What a shocker! It’s been eight years since the Fed introduced its ‘emergency’ zero interest rates. And it’s been at least a year since we made our prediction: It will never return to a normal interest rate policy ... more »
“Vote with a Friend (For Safety)”, "WhenHub"
*“Vote with a Friend (For Safety)”* by Scott Adams "The odds of mischief and violence on election day this year are alarmingly high. For your safety, I recommend that you don’t wear any Trump-related hats or clothing. That’s just asking for trouble. You might also want to meet a friend or family member near your voting place so you can vote together, just to feel safer. To make it easy to meet up with a friend, I recommend using my start-up’s new app: WhenHub. (It’s free.) WhenHub is like the Uber app but without an Uber car. When Truth Falls Apart-- How do we restore consensus in an age so divorced from fact?
*by Maria Bustillos* *If I have recognized the spread in drug warnings and financial doublespeak, where the corporate use of language approaches the absurd, where the shell of a communicative form is used to foreclose communication, I have also recognized it in forms of poetry that deliberately push us to confront the contingency and craziness of our culture’s use and abuse of words.* -Ben Lerner, Contest of Words, *Harper's*, October 2012 The lunatic notion of a “post-truth” or “post-fact” society gained traction during the administration of George W. While Americans Are So Focused On Tomorrow's "Election": The Criminal Israeli Occupation Of Gaza - Lives In Ruins: The Human Tragedy Unfolding In Gaza!
It has been a while since I last reported on a real human tragedy that is still ongoing in the Middle East... I am of course referring to the criminal and psychotic Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip, in what I have long called the largest "open air prison" on planet Earth... Yes, while our attention has been diverted elsewhere (and of course in most cases on purpose) the over 2 million Arabic occupants of that slender territory bordering the Mediterranean Sea are enduring brutality on the part of the criminal IDF occupation forces. In many cases the citizens of Gaza are not only... more »

What Cholera Tells Us About Global Health
I’ve been marking essays for the past week (two big advantages of Australian academia: November is a spring month, and second semester ends before Halloween), and a lot of my students were writing about the right to health and what it would take to realize it in a meaningful sense. That, naturally, led me to […]
Analogies in War: Marine Mammal Systems and Autonomous Weapons
Last week I was able to host and facilitate a multi-stakeholder meeting of governments, industry and academia to discuss the notions of “meaningful human control” and “appropriate human judgment” as they pertain to the development, deployment and use of autonomous weapons systems (AWS). These two concepts presently dominate discussion over whether to regulate or ban […]
Commentaries, Analysis, And Editorials -- November 7, 2016
*Albert Hunt, Bloomberg*: *Dismal Campaign Presages a Crisis of Government* One word describes this U.S. presidential election: dismal. That has ominous implications for the important tasks of governing over the next several years. Elections in which big issues are joined have value because they provide a governance agenda to be debated and decided. Both sides bear responsibility for the sorry state of politics this year, but the overwhelming blame belongs to Donald Trump. He has largely waged a campaign of venom and cruel insults that was substantively shallow. If you waded thr... more »
World News Briefs -- November 7, 2016 (Evening Edition)
*Reuters:** Clinton and Trump chase last-minute support on election eve* The U.S. presidential campaigns neared their end on Monday in the same angry tone they began, with Republican Donald Trump calling Hillary Clinton a "phony" and the Democrat accusing him of splitting the country, as a new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll pointed to a strong chance of her winning. Clinton and Trump raced through several battleground states in a last-ditch attempt to encourage their respective supporters to show up at polling places on Tuesday. Clinton sought to capture more support from Latinos, Afr... more »
