Day 2: Jeju Peace Walk Update
- Day two of the Jeju Island peace walk in South Korea was another hot one. We did 13 miles and everyone was very tired by the end. One man who specializes in fixing blisters was quite busy from morning until 8:00 pm helping the walking wounded. I developed just a tiny blister on the back of my heel from the rubbing of my sandals. Going to have to wear socks and shoes today which I have dreaded doing because of the heat. - In the photo above you can see the dish washing operation back at Gangjeong village. Crying wolf at another Olympics
There are two regular periods of hiatus in the media. One comes every year around Christmas-time when everyone pisses off to the beach, and if there is any news around there is no-one around the newsrooms to report it. Media mavens call this the Silly Season, because what does appear in what passes for news is evern sillier than what we normally see. Seriously. The other hiatus arrives once every four years when thousands of reporters are flown to the Olympics several weeks before they start, to find they have nothing yet about which to report until the Games actually commence... more »

Zip-bang headline for the lead story of the day is that some people get injured driving recreational vehicles. Who woulda guessed? The editorial is about how we like maple syrup. Trump Is Unlikely To Recover From His Disgraceful Treatment Of The Khan Family-- And Now He's On The Warpath Against Paul Ryan And John McCain

Property-owners have a better plan
Auckland’s proposed Unitary Plan has been much talked about. Capitalists have a better plan
*Our guest poster Robert Murphy reckons* *Capitalists Have a Better Plan* To the early 20th-century intellectuals [who invented central planning], capitalism looked like anarchy. Why, they wondered, would we trust deliberative, conscious guidance when building a house but not when building an economy? It was fashionable among these socialist intellectuals to espouse “planning” as a much more rational way to organise economic activity. (F.A. Hayek wrote a famous essay on the phenomenon.) Astronomers have found a huge stellar void around the center of our Milky Way galaxy. There has been no star formation in a a region stretching 8,000 light-years near the core of our galaxy for over hundreds of millions of years, looking back through space and time. The bold patch puts in doubt our understanding of the creation and evolution of the Milky Way. Sky at Night Magazine reports: A study has found a region that is devoid of a type of young star called Cepheids. Cepheids are useful for astronomers as they enable the measurement of distances in the Universe. They are relative... more »
Why isn't the MSM vetting Khizr Khan?...
*because the truth is ugly and it doesn't support their narrative. * I've been fairly silent on this whole contretemps involving Trump and Khan. My first thoughts when this started was why did the RNC have a Muslim speak who lost a son in 2004? Couldn't they find a more recent Muslim hero? I also thought that it would have been wise for Trump to have maintained silence on the issue. Now I realize that if it was not for Trump, we would have no idea of how corrupt all these people really are. As always, follow the money, and there's nothing the Clintons don't like more than money... more »

If they're having to rely on materialist dialectics to make a case for them, you know they're in trouble. But I'm not here to make light of Matt's piece. Candidate Clinton's strange statements to Wallace!
*TUESDAY, AUGUST 2, 2016Back to the missile gap:* In our view, Candidate Clinton responded strangely to some questions from Chris Wallace on this weekend's Fox News Sunday. Given two bites at the apple, Clinton seemed to say, then to suggest, that Director James B. Comey ("Comey the God") *didn't* say that she emailed classified material. Plainly, Comey *did* say that she did that. What explains Clinton's performance? We can't answer that question, of course. But our thoughts have drifted back to 1960 and the famous alleged "missile gap." Here's the way the story is frequently t... more »

Pseudo-Democracy > Reparations > Actual Democracy
originally published on CounterPunch It is hardly a coincidence that the Declaration of Independence, Adam Smith's *Wealth of Nations*, and Johann Friedrich Blumenbach's *On the Natural Variety of Mankind* were all published within a year of one another, for each supports a necessary aspect of a larger, integrated project. Not only was the rationale for seizing political power (provided by the Declaration) supported by Smith's popular text (which justified rule by the wealthy business class). How Badly Will Trump's Toxicity Poison Down-Ballot Races For Republican Candidates?
This morning, New York's Richard Hanna became the first Republican congressman to publicly announce he's actually voting for Hillary Clinton, telling his constituents that Trump is "unfit to serve our party and cannot lead this country." It's politically safe for him; he's retiring in January. Yesterday you read McCain's stern rebuke of Trump's disgusting attacks on the grieving parents of an American captain killed in Iraq protecting his men. Trump's "remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party," said McCain, obviously sincere in his contempt for the pile of vomit... more »

#RPGaDay 2016 Day 2 - Best game session since August 2015
I suppose it's a good sign that my favorite session over the past year is also the most recent - a Ghostbusters game. I'd been thinking about perhaps Star Wars D6 in the autumn and the groups been talking about Ghostbusters what with the new movie... So we figured a one-shot might be in order. PTSD: The Hidden Toll of Policing
Let us also add in prison guards as well and brutalized prisoners. Do not forget spousal abuse as well. My point is that this is a real problem that surely is derived from chronic adrenaline poisoning. We are only now coming to grips with it and beginning to measure it properly. What we really need is a simple test that determines the level of adrenaline poisoning to the body. I suspect this is possible and would do a long way toward establishing the level of treatment. It would also help to not wait for the victim to beat up his wife. The nature of the problem has shown tha... more »

Ma Bell Suppressed Innovation for Thirty Grueling Years
Sadly all managers feel threatened by innovation because it cannot be controlled, or at least that is how they feel. It takes lucre to change that mentality. The lucre usually comes in through the side door and destroys those hanging on to the past. Yet i do need to add something here. The necessary tools were really only invented during the seventies and that particularly means fiber optics. After that road block disappeared every engineer had a solution looking for a problem and that led quickly to massive pressure to end Ma Bells monopoly. Up until that moment in time Ma b... more »

Current State of the Sea Ice Cover July 2016
Sea Ice is continuing to remain stable year to year since it fell to its 2012 low point. That also means that most multi year ice has broken up as well. There is a lot less ice out there. However significant further losses demand a major wind shift as brought about the down shifts in the first place. We are running out of time this year. Abolish Long-Term Solitary Confinement: It's a Threat to the Public

Noam Chomsky on Anarchism, Communism and Revolutions
An interesting discussion.Capitalism evolved to or present dispensation and it is natural that half the population will oppose its obvious interests. For the past century, the only plausible alternative has been some version of socialism. That it has consistently failed to match the economic and the social performance of capitalism is also true. This is not because either is right or wrong as a consistent body of thought that when applied rings all the right bells. That consistent body of thought just happens to be mostly wrong headed from top to bottom and what has propped al... more »

My 1990s Brush with Bernie Madoff Revealed A Deadly Secret
Ah yes. It turns out that our boy wonder sold a scheme that was so seductive that all the other peddlers grabbed the cool aid to assist their own sales. The Prime Directive
It turns out that they will not openly talk to us until we learn how to reach other stars. Thar sort of makes sense. In the meantime they are working clandestinely to help us along and we must be pretty close as traffic keeps going up. That suggests that the Prime Directive is pretty leaky. Top Psychiatrist Says Mental Illness is Demonic Possession
This is good news. He has produced the largest data base and is able to discern patterns. What we learn is that there is not a lot of these but there is some that are clearly just that. Our own work informs us that a spirit released early may well attach itself to a living person and then ride side saddle ( my term ) in order to experience life and continue to advance the soul as originally planned. Mostly this happens to be completely neutral. The problem arises when the spirit involved lacks maturity or inclined to serious mischief. This produces situations in which aberra... more »
Revolution in Digital Trust
Read this and you may begin to understand how huge this is. It needs to be applied directly to all securities trading. Issues remain but the one time theft corrected the bug and the chance of a repeat dropped by an order of magnitude. I think we can live with that considering what is been replaced is far more leaky. .. . *Blockchains: Focusing on Bitcoin Misse... more »
Misconceptions about Japan and Japanese culture
From this it is clear that Japan is in deep trouble. Worse than that it is not been addressed. Again the solution lies in the establishment of natural communities that take over husbandry of the land and naturally put a premium on children. Add in internal micro finance to allow wealth creation and it all becomes self sustaining. This also sucks up all the individuals who have given up and are marginalized. Japan's success was produced by a top down fiat currency expansion that was sustained by export income. That has ended when it both matured and the rest of the worl... more »
Donald Trump’s Deals Rely on Being Creative With the Truth
Oh really? Just what business do you think that he dominated? He promoted real estate deals. That is the one business in which almost everyone is an ill informed buyer or seller supported by a bank wanting to peddle a loan. It is also incredibly tough to make a buck in it. You survive by agreeing to everyone and then once they are committed, beating them up to ensure suitability of the project. If it still fails, you put it in bankruptcy and then see if it can be refinanced to pay. You remember to pay yourself while you do this. There are a million easier ways to make a bu... more »
How Trucks Can Make Delivery Drones a Reality
This makes so much sense. The truck suddenly becomes a mobile warehouse that heads to a convenient distribution point and sets up there to move the goods. Just doing the obvious in moving a truck load from the airport to the downtown is perfect. Channeling Stock Symbols - SPY
Our improving knowledge regarding communication with spirits generally has led us to understand that a given human soul will express itself as many as thirty times in one life span. I suspect that means conception takes place at pretty well the same time, but then birth itself is spread out over as many today as eight weeks. This obviously allows a soul to have thirty parallel life times with several key learning experiences for each. Rather puts the ego in its place! Yet it solves the obvious efficiency question when it comes to lower lifeforms. This inspired my daughter to... more »
CDC Executive Resigns After Being Caught Colluding With Coca-Cola to Salvage Soda Market

*“The Bridge Across Forever- One”* "It's like, at the end, there's this surprise quiz: Am I proud of me? I gave my *life* to become the person I am right now! Was it worth what I paid?" "What would it be like to meet oneself in the future, or to encounter oneself in the past before making a life-altering decision? What if there were not simply one reality, but many concurrent realities where each of the possible paths one could take were all played out? "A Deranged Imagination..."
"It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination." - Douglas ... more »

*"The Lonely, Thirsty, Final Days of the Doomed Alaskan Mammoths"* by Ed Yong "It’s 3,600 B.C. Humanity is ascendant. We’re a few centuries out from inventing writing and entering the Bronze Age, but we are already smelting copper and lead, fashioning silk, and making wheels. In the Middle East, the great civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia are poised to take off. Meanwhile, 10,000 kilometers away, the last, lonely woolly mammoth of Alaska’s Saint Paul Island is dying of thirst. Saint Paul lies halfway between Russia and the United States. We Need a Clothespin Campaign for Hillary

Yellow peril update
So, are New Zealand houses being snapped up in their droves and taken away to China, as so many of the commentariat have been chattering about? No, say the figures.
