The cluster, dominated by bright blue stars, can be seen with the naked eye in a dark sky in the tail of the constellation of the Scorpion (Scorpius). Chet Raymo, “Spooked”

*“Spooked”* by Chet Raymo “The word everyone uses is "spooky." What they are talking about is entanglement, the spooky heart of quantum mechanics. You create a pair of subatomic particles, photons say, and send them on their separate ways. The particles seem to know what is happening to each other on their separate journeys. An activity performed on one particle can instantaneously change the properties of the other particle, no matter how far apart. And -this is the kicker- apparently instantaneously. Their fates are "entangled." In the latest test of entanglement (reported in the... more »

*"Relax And Pay Attention"* by Paulo Coelho "Sometimes we keep on waiting – with patience, resignation, courage – and still, things around us don’t move. But since this is the path we chose, it seems impossible that life’s blessings are not working in our favor. It provokes, therefore, a deep reflection about what we call “results:” our destiny is manifesting itself in a way we are not able to fully comprehend. I was watching a film about the American revolution. It was the usual malarkey about how the British were cruel, and Americans were nice, and Americans invented democracy and freedom and equality and all those good things. British soldiers of the time were often cruel. That's true. They were pretty much the scum of the earth, Glorious stories were written about them. But few women in Britain at the time would willingly marry a soldier. And American revolutionary soldiers and militias were pretty much cut from the same cloth. And democracy and freedom had been developing and even o... more »

That's Greek for the unmistakable overwhelming *No* to the banking cartel currently trampling all over democracy, all over the world, one nasty grind of the hyper-capitalistic heel at a time. The Greeks not only stood up for themselves, they just did the whole rest of the world a giant favor, too. They exercised some good, old-fashioned, bottom-up democracy. They spoke out against a group of very powerful, very sadistic people who thought that they could exercise their will through the instillation of fear and mass suffering. In time, they might come to call it the Tsipras Gamble. With an impossibly weak hand, no one seriously thought Syriza could pull it off. Predictions were made and screeds written on the genius/idiocy of Tsipras, but whatever side one took everyone inside and outside Greece forecast a tight vote (including, um, me). That debt must be serviced and ultimately must be paid down. The servicing of the debt requires that you spend somewhat less in the next period of time, and the paying of the debt requires... more »

Children of the Gaza War

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 11 hours ago
There's a programme coming up on BBC Two this Wednesday from Lyse Doucet called *Children of the Gaza War*. The programme's website contains the following blurb about it: Children in Gaza and across the border in Israel have lived through three major conflicts in six years. In the summer of 2014, more than 500 children were killed in a 51-day war, all but one of them Palestinian. Almost every child in Gaza lost a loved one. More than a third were left traumatised. On the Israeli border, children lived in constant fear of rocket attacks and underground tunnels. Lyse Doucet follow... more »

It has been over 90F out, and sometimes 100F, for over a month, seems like. The ground is complaining mightily, and now trees are beginning to shrink away from the sun. We anticipated this for several years and were more often wrong than right, but this year the garden's timing -- with things planted in March and April that traditionally are planted on Memorial Day weekend hereabouts -- has been impeccable. So we are bringing in green beans, runners, zukes, cukes and tomatoes, and I have even eaten a ripe apple. The garden pests have also cranked their calendar forward, but for on... more »

Abortion Access in the Maritimes

Here at DAMMIT JANET! we have blogged extensively (compulsively?) on abortion access, especially in Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. Now, VICE has produced a 33-minute documentary on abortion access in the Maritimes. Abortion has been a legal medical procedure in Canada for more than 25 years, but in spite of that, access varies widely across the country. Urban residents are far likelier to have easy access to the procedure, while rural people may face extra costs and time requirements like travel and figuring out where to go. 'Relations had been frozen since the early 1960s when the US broke links and imposed a trade embargo on Cuba.' Why did the US break links and impose a trade embargo? Was there no cause? For the lefty activists at the BBC facts as usual are subservient to a cause.

[image: Yi Long (Wing Loong) UAV]China's air force has sent off a drone to the site of an earthquake in the far western region of Xinjiang on July 3, Friday, to monitor rescue and relief work, the first time that the country had used an unmanned aircraft to undertake such a task, according to a report by Reuters. The report said that China's ambitious drone program is part of modernization efforts for the world's largest armed forces, which it intends to use at home and also for export. According to a statement from the air force posted on the Defense Ministry's website, the single... more »

Japan joins US-Australia war games amid China tensions

Ko Savonije at Naval Open Source INTelligence - 19 hours ago
The United States and Australia kicked off a massive joint biennial military exercise on Sunday, July 5, with Japan taking part for the first time as tensions with China over territorial rows loom over the drills. The two-week "Talisman Sabre" exercise in the Northern Territory and Queensland state involves 30,000 personnel from the US and Australia practicing operations at sea, in the air and on land. Some 40 personnel from Japan's army – the Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) – will join the American contingent, while more than 500 troops from New Zealand are also involved in the e... more »

Russia rebuilding and repairing its navy

[image: Varshavyanka class SSK]Russia’s shipbuilding industry is not in good shape, as the delays in refitting the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier as the Indian Vikramaditya showed. The United Shipbuilding Corporation has had integration problems and some shipyards have not been modernised since the Soviet period. Additionally, certain elements of the rearmament programme could be delayed as a result of the ending of defence cooperation with Ukraine. While the industry is not likely to meet the targets set by the current armament programme, it will probably be able to produce 50-7... more »

BWorld 9, Poitical populism vs. tax realism

* This is my article in BWorld last Friday. *Political populism vs. tax realism* THE 2016 general elections are just 10 months away. It is natural that people are discussing who should lead this country of 103 million people by that time. And more often than not, political and economic ideologies determine, whether explicitly or implicitly, people’s criteria in choosing and supporting their candidate/s. The Philippines has a personality-oriented politics, not philosophy- or ideology-oriented. This is also true of other countries, to be sure. Political parties have come and gone, an... more »

It's impartiality, Jon, but not as we know it

BBC Australia Correspondent Jon Donnison continues to sound off on Twitter. Capitalism Has Become Socially Dysfunctional. Paul Craig Roberts' prologue: "If you have not read John Perkins’ book, Confessions Of An Economic Hit Man, you should. The book is easy to read and explains clearly from the inside how US corporations deceive foreign governments into debts that they cannot service or repay and then use the IMF and World Bank as looting mechanisms and reduce the indebted countries to penury. Capitalism has become a socially dysfunctional system focused on pillage and not on the growth of consumer income that sustains and grows markets for goods and services. Once the last prospect is looted, there is nothing left to sustain capitalism. In this interview John Perkins describes the looting process in Greece. Tomorrow the Greek people face the same decision that the people in Iceland and Ireland faced. In Iceland the people rejected the debts and refused to pay them. Now Iceland is recovering. Somehow the feisty Irish were brainwashed into accepting austerity programs so that the looting of Ireland could continue, and Ireland continues to suffer. Sunday will tell us if Greeks have learned from the examples."

what i'm reading: wild by cheryl strayed, zeitoun by dave eggers

I've just finished two truly excellent works of nonfiction: *Wild* and *Zeitoun*. Both books read like fiction, with clean, clear writing and page-turning suspense. Both document almost unbelievable, out-sized events, in one case likely unique, in the other - horribly - anything but. I highly recommend both books. I didn't expect to like *Wild*. Something about the phrase "best-selling memoir" just turns me off. But when the book was chosen as one of my Library's "Raves and Faves," I was intrigued. Those are always excellent books. Flying Saucers and Kenneth Arnold

KRandle at A Different Perspective - 1 day ago
(Blogger’s Note: Yes, I’ve touched on this before but in the last week or so the MSM, that is to say Time, published a UFO story that made the point that flying saucer was based on an error so of proving there is nothing to the sightings. I thought I’d take another run at this idea.) I have seen recently more suggestions that the term, “Flying Saucer,” is a misnomer because Kenneth Arnold wasn’t describing the shape of the objects he saw but their motion through the air. Reports from June 1947, however, seemed to indicate that some objects were saucer shaped, and others, who were bu... more »

At 68 Patti Smith Still Has The Revolutionary Zeal Of A Twenty Year Old. Do You?

A few days ago, writing for *The Nation*, John Nichols covered Patti Smith's European concert tour, which marks the 40th anniversary of the release of her groundbreaking debut LP, *Horses*, by marveling at how the veteran rocker is giving Europe a masterclass in focused protest rock that puts younger artists to shame. Her patter between songs sounds something like a cross between Bernie Sanders and Alexis Tsipras. Go Patti! At 68, Smith remains a vital and provocative artist with a radical message for the 21st century: “We are all being fucked by corporations, by the military! ... more »

Quote of the Day: "The New Testament v the American Revolution" [updated]

"It is impossible to square the kind of violent rebellion that America’s revolutionary creators advocated and engaged in with the actual meaning of the scripture and accurate interpretations thereof. "The New Testament demands complete submission and obedience to the state; submission to the emperor; payment of taxes; and submission to evil—including violent aggression. Considerations of things such as "due process" and "no taxation without representation" are simply alien to the New Testament. Yes, it is Independence Day in the United States of America... Two hundred and 39 years ago, the American colonies declared their independence from the British Crown and Empire and a nation was born on the principles of freedom and liberty for all of its citizens... That is what the American people have long been led to believe... But in reality the original colonies never did become "independent" of the British Empire, and even today most Americans are truly unaware that the United States of America is actually still very much subservient to the British crown, and that the American... more »
