Subconscious Prediction and Reaction to Future Stimuli
I suspect that we all have short term precognition and that this allows us to prepare. This is obviously a very useful survival trait and provided it is possible it would be selected for. Since we are comfortable that such is possible it is plausible that it exists. Yet most of the time it will be dormant simply because it can be. It is like the sleeping cat. Yet it is also likely hard wired to our automatic response nervous system as well. After all, a suddenly charging Grizzly needs instant and correct response. This can include scaling the closest tree long before t... more »
Magna Carta: Beginning of the End of Tyranny
There is something important here for history buffs. the power of the Magna Carta arose because even Kings found it expedient to reissue it to remind those powerful enough to usurp the king's power that a rule actually existed to live under. It was from this repetition that the whole concept of a binding rule of law arose and embedded itself in even the popular mind. Parliament was not too far behind that idea. Sometimes it is not the law itself but the historic context that is important. After all men can gather and establish rules of conduct and men can gather to modify... more »
Russian Military Presence in Vietnam
[image: Russian Navy] The Bear is back because it is a perfectly good place to keep a chunk of its fleet that also puts it all on an active footing. The USA and Britain has had the luxury of global depots for centuries even while others are now waking up to their usefulness. China has the problem that while it has a Navy it is actually restricted to Home Ports very like the position of the German fleet in the first half of the twentieth century. At the same time it allows Russia through its ally to exercise a real presence in the South China Sea much to China's chagrin. Russ... more »
Cat Ownership Linked to Schizophrenia
The mere fact that half of all folks that develop schizophrenia or more generally by extension its syndrome did have cats as childhood pets is sufficent to make the following conjecture: *Conjecture:* A cat based vector is the cause of *ALL* Schizophrenia Syndrome disease. I am been very strong about this because a fifty percent incidence strongly suggests a high infection rate is normal and that means casual contact is good enough as well. Once identified we really do not need to go looking anywhere else. Fortunately we do have such a vector that fits the bill. I had s... more »
Yukon Fossil Find Redraws Camel's Family Tree
Sometimes you get the unexpected. The camel became cold country adapted and did migrate into North America a long time ago. Let us remember that the musk ox and all deer did the same and the camel was as well prepared. The massive extinction that took place 12,900 BP likely took them out as well. It is unlikely any re adapted to southern lands. After all the Mastodon did not leave us southern adapted Elephants in North America or lions for that matter. Thus the pattern is the same. That leaves us with more questions regarding the South American menagerie and... more »
New Algorithm Paves the Way for Light-Based Computers

Pope Creates Tribunal for Bishop Negligence in Child Sexual Abuse Cases
This is a positive development that will establish protocols and also discipline failure*.* Unwilling or not, the Catholic Church has found itself in the lead in tackling the particular problem of adults using authority to satisfy aberrant sexual and behavioral needs. That it was sadly vulnerable is obvious to all even though the actual numbers were no different throughout society itself. The majority of all cases occur inside the family and that remains mostly untackled. The church can do sensible things to prevent and manage a problem like this and other organizations ca... more »
Michelle Obama Talks About Race and Success
It took a long time to get from there to here. In 1960, Jim Crow reigned supreme. Among whites, only the sons and daughters of the well to do as recently as WWII made it into college. The GI bill changed that for many in the late forties. Today whites all have effective access to education and have had it for forty years. The same holds true for Blacks as well although they did lag as contemporaneously, we had to create a supportive legal framework that ended much of Jim Crow. That still left the socially disadvantaged struggling to break out. Yet it stopped been impossibl... more »
We'll All Eat Less Meat Soon
I do not think we will eat much less meat and in fact we will all be eating some meat and all that means is that gross meat production has a long way to grow. However what we do is bizarre and wrong if not stupid and will change out. Intensive organic agriculture is coming and central to that will be the massive use of fowl. Assuming an acre demands 100 chickens on an ongoing basis, that is an awful lot of chicken meat. Other fowl fit in as well. I anticipate an atmospheric pond irrigation system integrated with tree crops and ducks for the Central Valley. If self sustainin... more »
Nuclear Experimentation Year 70: Playing With Madness
The whole nuclear agenda has never been properly vetted and thought out. The moment in the midst of a seriously genocidal war led to the application of nuclear explosives as both Genocide and true Shock. Yet Russia's invasion ensured the speedy collapse of Japan regardless. At best it sped it all up by days although we will never know. That it worked out gave the nuclear option far too much credibility. A weapon that eliminates large swaths of the population while not touching the army has natural strategic limits. Recall that eliminating six million Jews did not... more »
The Olmecs
I see the Olmecs as part of the Atlantean world and we can be certain plenty of additional information is underwater all along the coast. What we are mostly seeing is the post Atlantean survival which also likely included peoples coming from the Mississippi Valley. At least the time frames are now better understood. What happened in 100 AD to end this complex civilization or did it end at all? More likely all trade with Europe ended with the collapse of Gaul and the emergence of Roman hegemony. That allowed the coastal regions to be abandoned for far more attractive upland re... more »
I am Racist and (If You’re White) You Probably Are, Too
If you are free white and twenty one, you always catch a break. That is because everyone expects better of you and when you step out of line will give you a break. As stated it is a power thing. Real power may be there and often is to resolve problems. Yet let me say something else. A black guy walking down the street wearing a Rolex will also catch a break for all the same reasons. A black female professional fashionably dressed is also treated as gold. It is all about the visual presentation of power. The bar is merely lower for white guys and gals but it i... more »

"It is good to be solitary, for solitude is difficult; that something is difficult must be a reason the more for us to do it. To love is good, too: love being difficult. For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of all the tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation. For this reason young people, who are beginners at everything, cannot yet know love: they have to learn it. Quote of the Day: The wrong kind of growth
When I’m talking to students about Austro-classical ideas, they often ask “Why did Keynesianism win out?” Here’s one answer: Why did the Keynesian faith win out? Economist salesmen like Keynes focused on *the future*, a perfect formula for the political class to use to drive growth well into the 1990s. This Keynesian message of growth via inflation and debt was also perfectly aligned with the message produced on Wall Street of ever rising earnings growth and stock prices. With the Keynesian revolution, however, also came debt, inflation, and progressively larger and larger financi... more »

A Different Perspective on A Different Perspective
When I began this blog so long ago, I envisioned a place where the various aspects of the paranormal could be intelligently discussed. I wanted to see people share ideas, solutions, questions and information in a way that would lead us to some sort of resolution. Oh, I knew that we wouldn’t solve everything and that sometimes we’d just have to agree to disagree, but I hadn’t expected the nastiness that has developed at times. I didn’t expect the name calling or the superior attitudes displayed by those at both ends of the spectrum. So, as of now, that will end. I will not tolerate n... more »
Stoke-on-Trent: Another Fine Mess
This one's going to run and run. I am, of course, referring to the controversial (to put it mildly) relocation of Stoke-on-Trent City Council from Stoke to Hanley. If you're not from the Potteries, it's a city made up of six towns with their own centres and, according to some, unique senses of identity. Confusingly for a metropolis called Stoke-on-Trent, the town that doubles up as its city centre is Hanley, not Stoke. However, whereas most cities have their council HQ in the centre moving it to Hanley has proved controversial because a) it came with a £55m price tag slap bang in t... more »

The neoconservatives who now run U.S. foreign policy, like "Dr. Strangelove," want to start a nuclear attack on Russia ...likely bringing on the extinction of us human beings, or at least those in the northern hemisphere. Why the neocons who have taken over Washington and it's European vassals, all of which are lying through their teeth -- pure propaganda. The "mainstream media?" They repeat this propaganda or lose their jobs. This leaves the human race only one chance: put aside your cognitive dissonances and watch what Russia has been saying on Russia Today (RT) or Sputnik News. Hint: you will find out that Russia wants peace more than anything. So, dear readers, if you take this advice our children and grandchildren may yet live to thank us.

The F35 is a chiwawa in a Dogfight
Failure to govern is epitomised in the F35. There is a good argument to be made for a nation, especially the USA to be armed to the teeth perpetually. There is IMHO a more compelling argument that such a policy is wasteful and ultimately a financial catastrophe for the nation. The main design feature of the F35 is that at least one part of it is has a lobby group in every congressional district. NGO Power Shift 2.0
In her seminal 1997 article, Power Shift, Jessica Mathews argued that a power shift was underway in international politics marked by a redistribution of power from states to non-state actors—mostly businesses and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Almost two decades later, NGOs are trying to foster a new sort of power shift, this time transferring power from […]
Risks of being a surety
Your best friend has been arrested. You know she has a drinking problem but you also know she's a good person and so when she calls and says "come to court and bail me out" you agree to. That makes you a surety for your friend. And that means you have to take all reasonable steps to make sure she follows all the rules imposed on her as part of her release. Those rules can be onerous - for example they may say your friend cannot drink. And for someone who is an alcoholic not drinking may be close to impossible. If you think you cannot make your friend follow the rules you should ... more »

Luckily I’m not Jan Moir or a high profile journalist who might get annihilated on Twitter, so I’m going to say a mean thing. If you’re squeamish about inappropriate, bad taste remarks, turn away now. We just didn't know where to go... This is it. Congratulations to John Humphrys for his extraordinary professionalism this morning. How does he do it? HIVA - the Polynesian Water Continent - then the Voyagers settled down
The Polynesian Triangle (centred around 'the lost world' of Hiva) covered 25,000,000 square miles of territory. *For years, elders on Easter Island have claimed their ancestors fled from a land called Hiva which sank as a result of a great disaster. New scientific evidence points to a remote island chain in Polynesia, suggesting it was the centre of an ancient and thriving civilisation. For 400 years, they have been known as the Marquesas Archipelago, but before they were simply called the Isles of Hiva.* [source HaBoPE] We'll find that many peoples of the (so called primitive) anc... more »

Dassault's Deal With India Was Important
[image: Dassault Rafale]Amid some controversy, India took to the news with a June announcement of the purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France’s Dassault Aviation. It was an important move for the nation, which counts China and Pakistan as border ‘mates’. India, which plans to spend about $100 million on modernizing its defense resources in the next 10 years, has suffered a spate of air fatalities in the past months as a result of an ailing air force. Test Pilot Admits the F-35 Can’t Dogfight

The pricey new stealth jet can’t turn or climb fast enough to hit an enemy plane during a dogfight or to dodge the enemy’s own gunfire, the pilot reported following a day of mock air battles back in January. “The F-35 was at a distinct energy disadvantage,” the unnamed pilot wrote in a scathing five-page brief that War Is Boring has obtained. The brief is unclassified but is labeled “for official use only.” The test pilot’s report is the latest evidence of fundamental prob... more »

Will the U.S. keep winning indefinitely? ISDS, that is
Now that Congress has given the President fast-track Trade Promotion Authority, the first agreement to be considered under these rules (no amendments allowed, up or down vote in 90 days) will be the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). As you know from previous columns, one of the most worrying aspects of the TPP is its expansion of investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), wherein private firms can bring their disputes with governments not to courts, but to international arbitration (usually through units of the World Bank or the United Nations), where legal precedent doesn't matter an... more »

*“Defense Mechanisms: Beyond Behavior”* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM “We can let go of our defense mechanisms when we are ready to be truly honest with ourselves. We all have defense mechanisms that we’ve developed over time, often without being aware of it. In times of trouble, the behaviors that have worked to get us past challenges with the least amount of pain are the ones that we repeat; even when part of us knows they no longer work. Such behavior is a natural response from our mental and physical aspects. But because we are spiritual beings as well, we have the ability to ... more »
