Inequality-- The Conservative Way

Did you read Ken's post last night about Davos and economic inequality? If not, here's another chance. OK, so who doesn't love traveling by private jet? I mean, everyone knows how sucky airplane travel has become, right? Especially all the way to Davos! THE NEW SAM-AND-COKIES: In search of a possible traffic study!

*THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 2014* *Part 3—Real conduct which did occur:* Last night, at the start of his cable program, one of the era’s biggest con men offered an overview of the Fort Lee fiasco: MATTHEWS (1/22/14): Good evening. I’m Chris Matthews in San Francisco. Let me start tonight with this: Like barnacles on a boat, suspicious matters now cling to the New Jersey governor’s office in Trenton. It began with an e-mail from Governor Christie`s office setting the clock for “traffic problems in Fort Lee.” Who struck up that conspiracy which led a deputy chief of staff to simply aler... more »

Stephen Harper Receives Honorary Doctorate from Tel-Aviv University

I feel sorry for students and graduates of Tel-Aviv University, this must be an embarrassment for them. I hope this doesn't damage the university's long-term reputation. Harper's Netanyahu love-fest continues, many in Israel are critical of Netanyahu's hardline politics, but Harper is blindly obedient to the Israeli prime minister. To top the day off, Harper visited a bird sanctuary named after him.

Canada and Nunavut

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 36 minutes ago
This week Canada's National Newspaper has had a special focus on the North - and that is a good thing. The main story clearly tried to understand Nunavut and put it in context - but it is striking that in so doing the very distance between (the rest of) Canada and Nunavut became obvious. And I don't mean physical distance only. The story was of an adventurer in a strange land far from home -- and it is very true that most Canadians haven't the faintest idea about the North. The writer was clearly a visitor who would go home and stay there. The sense of Nunavut being Canada, the ... more »

It’s often said, teachers wear many hats throughout the school day. As a teacher, I can certainly attest to this statement. In fact, I believe a teacher wears more hats than any other professional. all working people must mobilize against right-to-work laws. but will we?

It's no secret that Tim Hudak, who wants to be Ontario's next premier, wants to break every union in the province. So-called right-to-work legislation - the name has been a persistent and successful piece of propaganda, used everywhere without quotes - is at the centre of Hudak's campaign agenda. Will Ontario become a "right-to-work" province? Will Hudak become the new premier and succeed in dismantling Ontario's unions? It's a prospect that frightens me deeply. If every unionized worker in Ontario would join the fight against right-to-work, we'd win. And if every worker who benef... more »

The shadows fall across our summer earlier this year. One unwelcome sign that this must be election year is that politicians who are normally still at the beach until the dog-and-pony show in late January at the Ratana Church, are instead already cluttering up summer news broadcasts with pretentious, confusing, and probably disastrous election promises – promises and platforms they each hope will set the tone for this election year. They wondered: If there were time travelers among us, would they be on social media? How would you find them? Could you Google them? You can't just put out a cattle call for time travelers and expect good results. So Nemiroff's team developed a search strategy based on what they call prescient knowledge.
