Inequality-- The Conservative Way

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 30 minutes ago
Did you read Ken's post last night about Davos and economic inequality? If not, here's another chance. OK, so who doesn't love traveling by private jet? I mean, everyone knows how sucky airplane travel has become, right? Especially all the way to Davos! When I was president of Reprise, I had several awesome private jets at my disposal if I needed to fly to New York, which I did almost every month. I mean I did fly to New York. I didn't fly by private jet. You know how many times I asked my assistant to book me one of the jets? Never. Not once. A trip to New York on one of those bab... more »

Neil Young Draws Blood from the Oil Sands Development

Steve at Thinking Aboot - 2 hours ago
I never knew that. Neil got the CAPP to admit that even using their maximum minimum spin on a daily basis the Oil Sands extraction creates half the green house gases as all the cars in Canada. Thats sick! I am for reasonable development of resources, but that number does not sound reasonable. How much energy is produced on a daily bias by all those cars? So a similar amount of energy is being used to produce just bitumen, which then needs to be further refined? This sounds like a terribly inefficient use of energy. At this point I think we should ask Norway what to do!

Tower 217 Breathes Life into Classic GI Building

A classic tower in downtown Grand Island finds new life. It won't be the luxury hotel that had been proposed, but there's hope it will spur redevelopment efforts. It's no secret that Tim Hudak, who wants to be Ontario's next premier, wants to break every union in the province. So-called right-to-work legislation - the name has been a persistent and successful piece of propaganda, used everywhere without quotes - is at the centre of Hudak's campaign agenda. Will Ontario become a "right-to-work" province? Will Hudak become the new premier and succeed in dismantling Ontario's unions? It's a prospect that frightens me deeply. The shadows fall across our summer earlier this year. One unwelcome sign that this must be election year is that politicians who are normally still at the beach until the dog-and-pony show in late January at the Ratana Church, are instead already cluttering up summer news broadcasts with pretentious, confusing, and probably disastrous election promises – promises and platforms they each hope will set the tone for this election year. China Is Rapidly Catching Up To The U.S.-- In Corruption Among Political Elites

Yesterday, when I read the RNC had put obscure, horribly corrupt, former one-term Utah Congresswoman Enid Greene (AKA- Enid Mickelsen and Enid Waldholtz) in charge of the search for an appropriate locale for the 2016 Republican National Convention, I joked around by tweeting ole Enid should consider a place where GOP economic policies are appreciated, either China, which has benefitted from American conservatives incentivizing companies to ship jobs there, or an offshore tax haven like the Cayman Islands or Bahamas, where the easy money is sloshing around because the GOP opposes t... more »

More on the UK Sellout of NHS Medical Data and Records: How to Opt Out and How It's Being Hidden

noreply@blogger.com (Christian Munthe) at Philosophical Comment - 11 hours ago
Just a few days ago I once again pointed to the relentless determination of the UK government to set up a sellout of individual medical data and information, collected in the medical records of the ordinary patients of the National Health Service who have never signed up as research subjects , to private interests, such as the pharmacological industry and health insurance companies. This apparently without any type of safeguard for the many misuses easily imagined as an effect of such official recklessness. Now it turns out I was wrong. The photo from the right and further below are from the new Rob Ford drunk video. The video has reignited calls for Rob Ford to resign as mayor and seek rehab for his drug and alcohol addiction. We must warn you, much of the language used by Rob Ford is considered offensive. The video below is uncensored.

Why Sincere Political Donors Stop Contributing To The Dysfunctional Beltway Committees

This morning, the first Blue America contribution after we sent out a letter about Lee Rogers' race in CA-25, was from someone whose name I didn't recognize, Chris Horwitz, a PhD and the CEO of Electrogrip, a respected company in Pittsburgh known worldwide for advanced electrostatic gripping solutions. When I spoke with him, he mentioned he used to contribute through the DCCC and the other Beltway committees but when he explained why he had stopped, I asked him if he had time to write a guest post for *DWT*. ADDICT

Saturday night, I made this spur of the moment decision to stop drinking caffeine. I drink diet pop ALL DAY LONG, so this seemed to be a daunting task. I pretty much get up in the morning, open a pop and sip it while getting ready, drink about half. Come to work, open another drink it until about lunch time. Drink another and sometimes another in the late afternoon. Come home, drink 1-2 more. I rarely mix it up with anything else. And whenever I drink caffeine free mistakenly, I totally notice and get headaches. But, I don't like being addicted. I also, for various reasons,... more »

*"The Poet Dreams of the Mountain"* by Mary Oliver "Sometimes I grow weary of the days with all their fits and starts. I want to climb some old grey mountain, slowly, taking the rest of my life to do it, resting often, sleeping under the pines or, above them, on the unclothed rocks. What is it about powerful men, sexual assault allegations, and the inability of ostensibly democratic parties to treat such accusations with due weight and carry through proper investigations? I suppose to pose the question that way is to answer it. The Liberal Democrats' handling of the Lord Rennard enquiry has been a proper shambles, involving cock ups and conspiracies, accusations passed over for the "good of the party", legalistic burdens of proof, refusals to apologise, bizarre defences of conduct and, latterly, blood-curdling threats.
