11:39am MSTAre CIA Drone Pilots Likelier to Comply With International Law?
That is the justification made by senior lawmakers last week for adding a
secret provision into appropriations bill that would block President
Obama’s efforts to place the CIA’s drone program back under military
control. As reported in the Washington Post: Sen. Dianne Feinstein
(D-Calif.), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and a member

Something completely new happened last night!
*WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 2014*
*Hayes panel defends Wendy Davis:* Something happened on cable last night,
something that’s very new.
Down in Texas this Sunday, the Dallas News reported a few misstatements by
Wendy Davis, the Democratic gubernatorial hopeful. The report was written
by Wayne Slater, a very major, very mainstream Texas reporter.
(On balance, Slater actually tilts liberal. On cable, we would say he even
became a bit tribal during the last White House campaign.)
Davis has always told an inspiring story about her personal background. As
it turns out, a few of her claims h... more »
China Is Rapidly Catching Up To The U.S.-- In Corruption Among Political Elites
Yesterday, when I read the RNC had put obscure, horribly corrupt, former
one-term Utah Congresswoman Enid Greene (AKA- Enid Mickelsen and Enid
Waldholtz) in charge of the search for an appropriate locale for the 2016
Republican National Convention, I joked around by tweeting ole Enid should
consider a place where GOP economic policies are appreciated, either China,
which has benefitted from American conservatives incentivizing companies to
ship jobs there, or an offshore tax haven like the Cayman Islands or
Bahamas, where the easy money is sloshing around because the GOP opposes

Tell The EU Parliament To Keep The Internet Free & Open Before Thursday, 23 January 2014
In case you haven’t heard, *the open and creative character of the internet
is under threat in Europe.*
This Thursday, the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) Committee
of the European Parliament will vote on the European Commission’s Telecoms
Single Market proposal. *As written, the proposal includes provisions that
would undermine net neutrality and establish an internet where
discrimination is the default setting.* Unless the IMCO Committee stands up
for net neutrality, ISPs will be given the power to decide which

More on the UK Sellout of NHS Medical Data and Records: How to Opt Out and How It's Being Hidden
Just a few days ago I once again pointed to the relentless determination of
the UK government to set up a sellout of individual medical data and
information, collected in the medical records of the National Health
Service to private interests, such as the pharmacological industry and
health insurance companies. This apparently without any type of safeguard
for the many misuses easily imagined as an effect of such official
recklessness.

Not incarcerating convict despite sentence inadequate and increased on appeal
R. v. Smickle, 2014 ONCA 49:

inadequate. Sometimes after identifying the sentence that should have been

Counterproductive Tactics Of The Iraqi Security Forces
Parts of Iraq’s Anbar province are in open rebellion right now against the
central government. One of the main complaints of the Sunni population who
is behind the revolt is the abuses of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF). The
army and police no longer carry out counterinsurgency operations where they
attempt to protect the population, but rather act like the United States
did before the Surge with indiscriminate shelling of population centers and
mass raids and arrests. Because of these tactics many feel like they are
suffering mass punishments simply because they live in the wrong... more »

New Rob Ford video, Toronto mayor drunk
A new video of crack smoking *Toronto mayor Rob Ford* has surfaced, this
time showing a drunk (and possibly high) Rob Ford talking to some men in a
fast food restaurant while speaking in a fake Jamaican accent.
The photo from the right and further below are from the new Rob Ford drunk

The video has reignited calls for Rob Ford to resign as mayor and seek
rehab for his drug and alcohol addiction.
We must warn you, much of the language used by Rob Ford is considered
offensive. The video below is uncensored.

Why Sincere Political Donors Stop Contributing To The Dysfunctional Beltway Committees
This morning, the first Blue America contribution after we sent out a
letter about Lee Rogers' race in CA-25, was from someone whose name I

respected company in Pittsburgh known worldwide for advanced electrostatic
gripping solutions. When I spoke with him, he mentioned he used to
contribute through the DCCC and the other Beltway committees but when he
explained why he had stopped, I asked him if he had time to write a guest

ADDICT
Saturday night, I made this spur of the moment decision to stop drinking
caffeine.
I drink diet pop ALL DAY LONG, so this seemed to be a daunting task. I
pretty much get up in the morning, open a pop and sip it while getting
ready, drink about half. Come to work, open another drink it until about
lunch time. Drink another and sometimes another in the late afternoon.
Come home, drink 1-2 more. I rarely mix it up with anything else. And
whenever I drink caffeine free mistakenly, I totally notice and get
headaches.
But, I don't like being addicted. I also, for various reasons,... more »

Do you teach your kids to live green?
Consider this: The average age of US presidents, when they take office, is
54 years. The US Constitution requires that senators be at least 30 years
of age. Decision makers in other countries are probably similar in age.
That means, potentially, that within the next 20-50 years, our children
will be making decisions for the world and our environment. If we encourage
a strong sense of environmental responsibility in them, and give them the
tools necessary to protect the planet, then we have hope for the future.

Economic freedom essentially means individual liberty, the freedom of an

The individual is also protected from aggression and coercion by bullies

backed a candidate Democratic voters can't relate to. And he's doing it
again this year.
The Beltway committees like the DCCC and NRCC get their information about
America from the *Cook Report* and the *Cook Report* gets its information

cluelessness. But I have to admit, *Cook* always gets their predictions

Fat Free Econ 53: WESM, Myths and Realities
* This is my article yesterday in interaksyon.com
--------
With the debate on whether the power generation rate increase -- mistakenly
referred to as "Meralco rate hike" -- is justified or not, the role of WESM
has been put under question.
The Wholesale Electricity Spot Market was created under Sec. 30 of Republic
Act 9136 or the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 (EPIRA). Power
generators, distribution utilities (DUs) and electric cooperatives, bulk
consumers, similar entities authorized by the Energy Regulatory Commission
(ERC) can participate there.

Stephen and Benjamin's Rendezvous
Does Netanyahu really speak for "all of the people of Israel" as he claims
here? Many in the country feel his hardline stands are counterproductive
for both the Palestinians and for Israel, counterproductive to peace.
Nonetheless, the hardline Netanyahu was positively beaming in his
introduction of Stephen Harper, who has given blind support to hardline
elements in the Israeli government, embodied by Netanyahu.
Just as many Canadians are ashamed of Harper, many Israelis are ashamed of
Netanyahu.
World's 85 people own the wealth equal to half of the population of the world
*The combined wealth of the world's richest 85 people is now equivalent to
that owned by half of the world's population – or 3.5 billion of the
poorest people – according to a new report from Oxfam.*
The wealth of the richest 1% in the world is now 65 times the total wealth
of the
bottom half of the world's people, Oxfam says.

My second thoughts on DCPS #IMPACT and #teachereval @thewashteacher @rweingarten
I’ve been obsessing just a bit over my first official encounter with one of
the crown jewels of the inner city education reform movement: the DCPS
IMPACT evaluation scheme. Student growth, or VAM scores, account for a
significant portion of any teacher’s overall evaluation. And despite AFT
President Randi Weingarten’s recent come to Jesus moment […]
Ignorance Personified
Stephen Harper claims that criticizing Israel is a new form of
Anti-Semitism. Of course, he defines Israel as the Netanyahu government.
But, as Gerry Caplan writes, there is so much more to Israel than the
Netanyahu government:
But it’s not Israel that he supports. It’s the government of Benjamin
Netanyahu. Among the great truths the Canadian delegation will not be
reminded of is that Mr. Netanyahu represents only one faction of Israel
today, just as Mr. Harper represents only a minority of Canadians.
Like Mr. Harper, Mr. Netanyahu has generated a great deal of opposition.

Scottish Speculation
I quote aangrifan:
*"According to The Sunday Times (Pressure on police to release paedophile
dossier), 23 April 2006, Strathclyde Police have a dossier listing members
of a child-abuse ring. *
*The dossier is said to implicate senior public figures, including senior
police officers and members of the Crown Office and former Scottish Office.*
*It is interesting to note that some of our blog posts on these matters are
becoming almost impossible to find on Google. And the trolls are trying to
tell us that these missing children have nothing to do with pedophile
rings."*

Veruca Salt Rules the World
Veruca Salt, you may remember, was the obnoxious little hellion who sang "I
Want the World, I Want the Whole World, and I Want it Now!" before she
literally flew down the garbage chute to hell in a candy factory.
Imagine, if you will, Veruca Salt multiplied by 85. Then imagine that there
are no Willy Wonka governments around to rein in her greed, let alone
sentence her to her just desserts. In fact, 85 nonfictional Veruca Salts*
are on a rampage, and they've already sucked up half the wealth of the
entire planet. And they've made it perfectly clear that they're still
hungry. The... more »
INEQUALITY IS BAD
www.declineoftheempire.com .
What is causing our huge welfare bills, huge debts and huge poverty?
*It's all about inequality* says economist Will Hutton
*"Inequality has surpassed the levels of Edwardian England."*
Inequality was declining until the 1970s.
It was in the 1980s that nasty people like Reagan and Thatcher began the
process of increasing inequality.
How severe is the inequality?
*Eighty-five people control the same amount of wealth as half the world's
population.*

I love Valentine's Day. My mom always went out of the way to make
Valentines really special for each of us. I remember finding a little box
of chocolates in my homemade lunch every year on Valentine's Day. It always
made the holiday so much fun, even if you didn't get the day off school.
This is really the first year that my 5-year-old has cared about Valentines
and I am so excited to bring out some of my favorite traditions. When I was
a little kid, it was all about the elaborate Valentin... more »

Cable news guests say the darnedest things!
*TUESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2014*
*Why viewers have to be careful:* Cable news guests say the darnedest
things. When you listen to such guests, you really do have to be careful.
Consider Nick Acocella, who guested with Lawrence on last Thursday’s Last
Word. Lawrence introduced him as “editor and publisher of Politifax New
Jersey.”
That's a branch of PolitickerNJ.
Eventually, Acocella spoke. Part of this was right on target. Part of this
was weird:

lawyer, and he’s going to talk lawyer talk. We don’t know what he’s goi... more »
JAPAN'S DISPOSABLE WORKERS
Japan's structural economic problems are further alienating its already
marginalized populations.
Photojournalist Shiho Fukada goes beyond the bright lights of Tokyo to
document the country's unemployment crisis - disposable workers who are
easily fired and live without a social safety net. They are usually shut
out from the rest of the society, living in poverty but rarely acknowledged
by their fellow citizens.
Fukada's photographs add a human face to widely discussed issues—from day
laborers living on the streets to educated women taking banal jobs. She
reveals the other side o... more »
THE NEW SAM-AND-COKIES: Impossibly bad!
*TUESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2014*
*Part 2—Zernike, counting to two:* New York Times reporting of the Fort Lee
mess has been almost impossibly bad.
(Note to readers: From this point on, we are evaluating the work of the New
York Times. We are *not* evaluating the conduct of Chris Christie, or even
that of David Wildstein, who wasn’t his best friend in high school.)
The reporting has been remarkably bad. Consider what happened on December
10, when the Times made its first attempt to report this extremely peculiar
affair.
On Monday, December 9, New Jersey’s Assembly Transportation Committ... more »

Dec 2013 Another Deadly Month For Iraq’s Ninewa Province
Iraq’s Ninewa province remained one of the most dangerous places in the
country again in December 2013. That month saw the most attacks for the
year, resulting in another large number of dead and wounded. Almost all the
violence was centered around the governorate capital of Mosul, which has
remained an insurgent stronghold since the beginning of the war.
(*Wash Post*)
In December militants remained focused upon killing and intimidating the
local population of Mosul and its security forces. For the month there were
147 attacks surpassing November’s 142 for the most in the year. T... more »

Toxic Democratic Fundraising
*By Danny Goldberg*
I’ve always respected the importance of elections but the receipt of
hundreds of fundraising emails has driven me to the brink of political
despair. They all seem to have been written and designed by the same
consultant and have as much sincerity as the phony pitches about millions
of dollars waiting for me in a Nigerian bank account or the diet plans from
a friend’s hacked computer.
On January 18th I got this email from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid:

Military Drills will usher in a Free Planet
since the time of King Alfred, AD 899, when Anglo-Saxon *Britain* thoroughly
vanquished the Danish Invasion of its lands, mankind has been told only
certain truths about the reality of its existence, of the reason for things
like industry and towns and security. It's all part of the Warlords plan of
readiness in the event that their enemies start eyeing their assets at home

'necessary evil to retain one's land' but that's not even half of the story.

A Chance to block Monsanto GMO Foods In Sweden
Sign the Petition, as they say vote early and vote often. I often have to
ask myself what is with Sweden. Its got the high moral ground well occupied
but ever now and then an anomaly like this GMO food issue arises. Why is
Sweden the only country in the EU wanting to make GMO foods legal?Other
things you would not expect from Sweden are the persecution of Julian
Assage and Pirate Bay. Somehow I suspect its all linked to the death of Olof
Palme The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books insinuate there
is something sinister lurking in high Swedish places.

Why is this not criminal conduct ? Treasury Secretary Geithner Warned S&P Chairman US Would Retaliate For Downgrade - S&P has alleged that Geithner threatened by stating “S&P’s conduct would be looked at very carefully,” Geithner told McGraw according to the filing.“Such behavior would not occur, he said, without a response from the government.” And then .... The Justice Department last year accused S&P of lying about its ratings being free of conflicts of interest and may seek as much as $5 billion in civil penalties. The government alleged in its Feb. 4, 2013, complaint that S&P knowingly downplayed the risk on securities before the credit crisis to win business from investment banks seeking the highest possible ratings to help sell the instruments.
