Richard Berman’s Declared Union-bashing Strategy

On January 13, 2014, I published a post about Richard Berman’s Center for Union Facts (CUF) attack on the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) via its five-story billboard in Times Square (and its similar, full-page New York Times ad in December 2013). I believe that this barrage of CUF ads is the direct result of recently-elected New York City Mayor Bill […]

It is widely accepted that life is hard. My sister was not the only one whose favorite saying was “Life sucks and then you die.” The whole notion of a joyful existence comes off as a frivolous idea – cool if you are lucky enough to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth or if you are one of those perpetually optimistic people; but not realistic. To write here that joy is or ought to be your focus sounds nice but a bit naive. Rather, it would seem more efficient and helpful to focus on abundance, health or even free energy. Joy may result if those things are in place, but i... more »

The Economy: “Beware This Dangerous Wealth Mirage”

*“Beware This Dangerous Wealth Mirage”* by Bill Bonner “US stocks fell about 1% yesterday (give or take). Let's see, the total value of the stocks trading on the NYSE is about $17 trillion. So, yesterday erased about $170 billion worth of 'wealth.' By our reckoning, there's about $7 trillion left to go. It's too early to call a top... but we wouldn't want to be sitting on the uppermost branch of this tree. The higher up you go, the more dangerous your perch. I initially called them as “anti-CO2, anti-coal, anti-nat gas, anti-nuke, anti-GMO, anti-Bt corn, anti everything”. The GP guy, Francis, replied that they are “against burning coal and fossil fuels, not only because doing so produces CO2 that causes global warming and nuclear power is beset with a lot of issues, esp. safety issues. but we are not "anti-everything" in fact, we are for other cleaner and safer sources of energy and energy efficiency. our stand against GMOs... more »

*“Rare Color Film Shows What London Looked Like In 1927”* “In 1927 Claude Friese-Greene shot some of the first-ever color film footage around London. He captured everyday life in the city with a technique innovated by his father, called Biocolour. Though we usually think of French names like Lumiere and Melies when we think of early film pioneers, Friese-Greene’s technique captures London in striking detail, as if putting the whole city in a time capsule. The people, now long since gone, pass before us like ghosts. What’s striking is, apart from the noticeably formal clothing and a ... more »

Despite hopes for continued growth, Iraq’s oil industry was stagnant in 2013. It not only exported less oil than 2012, but it didn’t earn as much either. That hasn’t stopped the Oil Ministry from predicting huge expansion in 2014. Most of the major oil fields in the south are going to increase production this year, but that can’t be exploited unless the government’s infrastructure projects are completed on time. CONFIRMED: The DEA Struck A Deal With Mexico's Most Notorious Drug Cartel ....... In what should outrage every American - noting this has occurred during the so called War Against Drugs and harsh federal drug sentencing guidelines - we now find out that an investigation by El Universal found that between the years 2000 and 2012, the U.S. government had an arrangement with Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel that allowed the organization to smuggle billions of dollars of drugs while Sinaloa provided information on rival cartels. ........ here is another head kicking nugget --- Zambada-Niebla's lawyer claimed to the court that in the late 1990s, Castro struck a deal with U.S. agents in which Sinaloa would provide information about rival drug trafficking organizations while the U.S. would dismiss its case against the Sinaloa lawyer and refrain from interfering with Sinaloa drug trafficking activities or actively prosecuting Sinaloa leadership. ...... And we have heard about this before , but still mid blowing ---- "The agents stated that this arrangement had been approved by high-ranking officials and federal prosecutors," Zambada-Niebla lawyer wrote. After being extradited to Chicago in February 2010, Zambada-Niebla argued that he was also "immune from arrest or prosecution" because he actively provided information to U.S. federal agents. ........ And was this what " Fast and Furious Operation " really was all about --- Zambada-Niebla also alleged that Operation Fast and Furious was part of an agreement to finance and arm the cartel in exchange for information used to take down its rivals. (If true, that re-raises the issue regarding what Attorney General Eric Holder knew about the gun-running arrangements.) ---

“The session on July 18 on the top floor of the American mission in Vienna was a meeting of former rivals. Before the Iraq war, Dr. ElBaradei had attracted the wrath of the Bush administration by declaring that his agency had found no evidence that Saddam Hussein was reconstituting his nuclear program. And the administration had tried to oust Dr. ElBaradei, an Egyptian, from his post, partly because they found him insufficiently tough on Iran.”
Assessing just how far the Iranians have gone from plan to product is difficult. “It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that beautiful pictures represent reality,” a senior intelligence official said. “But that may not be the case.”
Although ElBaradei has been vindicated on Iraq, he was still ousted from the IAEA, in what appears to be be a complete repeat of the Iraq deception with Iran.
“The idea that we’ll wake up tomorrow and Iran will have a nuclear weapon is an idea that isn’t supported by the facts as we have seen them so far,” said ElBaradei before his departure in 2009

Our friends at OpenSecrets.org: Tracking Money In Politics have released new and improved ‪#‎opendata‬ on lobbying!
This is big news. We're now able to show which lobbyists lobbied on which bills, and which agencies they visited -- which means that now, we can show which lobbyists specialize in issues like health care or financial reform, as well as which federal agencies receive the most attention from lobbyists.

A September 2012 study conducted by Giles-Eric Seralini of Caen University a found an increased risk of tumors and adverse toxicological effects from Monsanto's corn, NH 603 and its patented herbicide RoundUp. The two year study was a duplication of Monsanto's own "safety" study, with the only difference being that Monsanto's study was only conducted for 90 days. Adverse affects showed up in the fourth month, incidentally. In the year that followed, Seralini and his study came under relentless attack by industry and mainstream media despite the transparency and full disclosure of data by Seralini and his scientific team. Two months ago, in an unprecedented decision by the journal, Food, Chemical & Toxicology, this study was retracted for "inconclusiveness". It was discovered that "11 of the authors of letters to the editor slamming Séralini’s study had undisclosed financial relationships with Monsanto."
