Uh-oh. You knew this was gonna happen sooner rather than later. Drones are going rogue. One of America's own just attacked the same great ship of state that launched it: The Navy says an aerial target drone malfunctioned and struck a guided missile cruiser during training off Southern California, causing two minor injuries. Lt. Lenaya Rotklein of the U.S. Third Fleet said the accident on the USS Chancellorsville happened Saturday afternoon while the ship was testing its combat weapons system off Point Mugu. The AP reports that two crew members suffered minor burns from the drone s... more »

I have previously written about a book I highly suggest reading entitled JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died & Why It Matters. Long-time peace activist James Douglass wrote the book and worked on it for 12 years. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. You should read it, you will be shocked and moved by this story, and you will want to tell others about it. *by Ken* The American Prospect, as part of a special feature called "The State of Work in the Age of Anxiety," has an important piece by Harold Meyerson called "The 40-Year Slump," of which I can only hit some of the highlights here. The economic landscape of the quarter-century following World War II has become not just unfamiliar but almost unimaginable today. It constitutes what historian Vaclav Smil has termed “a remarkable singularity”: The United States came out of World War II dominating the world’s production and markets, and its unprecedented wealth was shared broadly am... more »

Or that the cost of the Afghan and Iraq wars is at least $6 trillion (twice the entire Social Security trust fund), thus explaining the explosion of the US public debt?

Hollow At The Core

The Rob Ford Circus has laid bare the void at the centre of modern Canadian Conservatism. Michael Harris writes that the party -- and what it stands for -- has degenerated into what he calls ROFO Madness: ROFO madness is when you smoke crack cocaine and show up in videos making death threats. Your mother blames it on your weight problem. Then you sell bobblehead dolls of yourself to people lining up to have their picture taken with you. As with business and government, and news and entertainment, notoriety and celebrity have merged. And there are always cheerleaders in the media ... more »

Does Max Baucus Get To Choose His Senate Successor?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 15 hours ago
Brian Schweitzer: "Don't listen to the bullshit you hear in Washington, D.C. If the election were held today, John Bohlinger would win 2-to-1 over John Walsh." -by Bob Brigham The last time there was on open US Senate seat out here in Montana was in 1978. As your author was in diapers, I didn’t get a choice. Those who did sent Max Baucus to Washington, where he’s remained to this day. With poll numbers that have been in the toilet since he let health insurance lobbyists write his health care bill, Max Baucus announced this spring that he would not running for reelection. This set u... more »

"Or perhaps Israel"

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 17 hours ago
Hadar at BBC Watch has posted a full transcript of yesterday's *Today * interview between Sarah Montague and Baroness Warsi. The subject up for discussion was the persecution of Christians. One of the questions put by Sarah Montague during the course of that interview has provoked a good deal of adverse criticism: “But are you saying – can I just ask – countries like Pakistan that you refer to, or perhaps Israel or even Iraq where there is a functioning government – is it just down to the politicians in those countries to speak out and this problem could be solved?” Many listener... more »

Cops Can Crack an iPhone In Under Two Minutes

From http://classic.slashdot.org/story/12/03/27/212254 Sparrowvsrevolution writes "Micro Systemation, a Stockholm-based company, has released a video showing that its software can easily bypass the iPhone's four-digit passcode in a matter of seconds. It can also crack Android phones, and is designed to dump the devices' data to a PC for easy browsing, including messages, GPS locations, web history, calls, contacts and keystroke logs. Maybe it`s just me, not sure anymore and at times it seems easier to just quit, look the other way, close my mind, ears and eyes and perhaps just descend into Rob Ford`s world, a world I liken to "Wonderland" And yes it is true that access to information, FOI`s..ATI(Freedom of information and Access to information) are getting harder to come by, Governments across Canada are using back channel emails and or verbal conversations with winks and nods to convey information, they also use the claim of cabinet confidentiality to shield information from the public, but that is no excus... more »

Stratocaching

Geocaching is a kind of game related to orienteering in which people hide and seek GPS/GSM receivers at random places of the globe. Some Czech organizations have brought the game to a brand new level: see Stratocaching.CZ and an explanatory article in English or a fresher one translated from Czech. *The video at Stratocaching.cz has 3 tabs, showing the situation in the balloon; control center; and the launch site. Free Trade 29: ASEAN and Education Competitiveness

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 22 hours ago
* This is my article yesterday in thelobbyist.biz. ---------- We will have the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by January 2015 or just 14 months from now. This is a great opportunity for many of us in the region to experience freer movement of goods and services or people. While some people see more threats than opportunities in regional free trade like the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), the threats are too often exaggerated. Free trade means local producers and manufacturers will have (a) wider sources of production inputs that are cheaper and/or better quality, and (b) wider and ple... more »

World record broken: Quantum Memory

Megaan at Current news updates, World current news - 22 hours ago
*A delicate quantum memory state has been held steady at room temperature for a world record 39 minutes - overcoming a key barrier to ultrafast computers.* Qubits of information set in a silicon system persisted for almost 100 times longer than still before. Quantum systems are disreputably fickle to measure and manipulate, but if harnessed could transform computing. The new standard was set by an international team led by Mike Thewalt of Simon Fraser University, Canada. But in a quantum scheme, qubits are stored in a so-called superposition state in which they can be both 1s and... more »

Su Beng Bio Crowdfunding Campaign: Please help!

As Su Beng turns 95 or 96 as it would be counted in Taiwan, I have felt an increasing urgency to complete his biography. Su Beng's life is the story of the struggle of the people of Taiwan, and, now more than ever before, I believe that telling his story will bring greater international awareness to the situation in Taiwan. Sunday Classics preview: The long-separated twin brother and sister Siegmund and Sieglinde recognize each other

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
*Plácido Domingo and Adrienne Pieczonka as Siegmund and Sieglinde at the Met, April 2009* *by Ken* This week I want to finish up with my contention that that extraordinary depth of pain we hear coming out of Wotan, first in Act II of *Die Walküre*and then, of course, in the his final farewell to his cherished daughter Brünnhhilde at the end of the opera, is tempered by our knowledge that most of this pain is self-inflicted. Last time we listened to the whole of Act I of the *Walküre*, the second opera (but properly speaking "First Day") of Wagner's *Ring of the Nibelung*tetralogy. ... more »

Toronto isn't shamed by Rob Ford

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
The situation has become somewhat absurd. The revelations and reactions seem to suggest the Mayor is suffering from a breakdown of some sort - and that is hardly surprising seeing as what has happened in the last few weeks. But none of this shames Toronto. The suggestion that business will avoid the city because of the Mayoral scandals is preposterous. It is obvious that the Mayor's issues are an aberration and the reaction of the Council shows that. There is no suggestion that drug use is widely accepted in the corridors of power -- and that's why there is a scandal.

Today in inane analogies

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 1 day ago
For reasons unknown, BigMedia lapsed into the worn out "Obamacare is Obama's Katrina" mania today. With predictable results. News flash: comparing the rugged launch of a major social safety program to the bodies of Americans floating in a drowned city is always going to be really offensive. But I suspect that was the point. Trolling for outrage. It worked. I have nothing to add to this. It pretty much captures the day perfectly. .@DukeStJournal I do believe that Tea Pot Dome was known as "Harding's Obamacare" at the time. — Brian Beutler (@brianbeutler) November 15, 2013
