It's possible to make too much of it, but sure, the shutdown matters.
What doesn't matter? Most likely, it's the glitches -- very real -- in the

the interface. We'll see, I guess.
What do you have? What was pushed off the front pages that we should know

The Cy Young argument for increased testing
NEA president Dennis Von Roekel has made this argument:
"Under the No Child Left Behind law, states have released test results that
supposedly tell us how many students are proficient in math and reading.
The problem is, each state sets its own benchmark for proficiency, and
different students are held to different standards.
Imagine if the batting average of one baseball player was based on at-bats
against Cy Young winners, while another average was compiled from plate
appearances in the minors. You couldn't tell much by comparing the two
numbers."

KMT no appeal in Wang case
KMT announces it will not appeal in Wang case (UDN). A friend with much
legal experience here observes:
....the High Court did not dismiss the KMT's appeal. It heard the appeal
and issued a decision upholding the District Court's injunction. Had it
dismissed, there would have been no hearing or written judgment. Looks like
the KMT has wisely decided not to appeal to the Supreme Court. That means
hearings in Wang lawsuit will begin in a month or so. The case will take at
least a couple years to wind through the courts, so it look like Wang will
survive to complete his term.

the earth is always shifting, the light is always changing, the sea does
