10:22pm MDSTDo VA Dems grasp now why they needed a decent gubernatorial candidate to go up against "Crazy Ken" Cuccinelli?
*No, this isn't a recent photo. This is back in May that dreadful Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe was smiling that, er, creepy smile.* *by Ken* The last time I wrote derisively about the appalling Terry "The Bagman" McAuliffe as the best Virginia Democrats could come up with to succeed downward-spiraling Gov. Bob McDonnell, a commenter noted that McAuliffe in fact has a good chance of winning. Even if I believed that, my point would be, "So what?" Yes, better that he should be elected than the unspeakable right-wing-crazed Cuckoo Ken, but that's the onl... more »

The Gang's All Here
I've been rather spoiled this year when it comes to the number of birds that show up around the house. Three woodpeckers (yellow-bellied sapsuckers actually are regular visitors in the early morning and evening hours along with chipping sparrows, magpies and chickadees. These House Sparrows all turned up yesterday right as I was getting home from work. Granted the photograph isn't the best but I was in a rush to snap some photos out my bedroom window before they all flew away on me. Plus I had a very excitable cat next to me on the window ledge. These photos are some of the firs... more »

Ultimate APSA 2013
APSA-goers: the ultimate frisbee game will be Saturday, August 31st, at 10am in Grant Park. The park is in between the Chicago Hilton and Lake Michigan. Bad Day For The Gun Nuts
It was very close-- and dramatic, with at least one senator, Lisa Murkowski, changing her vote at the last second, and another, Heidi Heitkamp, flying in from a North Dakota sickbed while Harry Reid held the vote open-- but the Senate shut down the Republican/NRA filibuster of Todd Jones to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). The GOP and NRA have managed to prevent the appointment of a director for 7 years! "For the past seven years," wrote Gabby Giffords to her followers on Friday, "the gun lobby has cowed Congress into blocking nomination after nomination to... more »
Why Labour Doesn't Need Jim Messina
"We're doomed! We're doomed!" No, I'm not channelling Private Frazer's ghost. But this sums up the deflated mood afflicting sections of the front bench and commentariat. Why? Because it appears the Tories are getting their act together. Some polls a narrowing of the Labour lead, while others wipe it out altogether, or (confusingly) show Labour extending its lead. Either way, poll volatility is not something a party that has hitherto enjoyed a commanding lead should be relaxed about. The second bit is the mileage shale gas/tobacco/private health lobbyist Lynton Crosby has made since ... more »
Hung's Death, Protests, and justice
*A truckload of mushrooms outside Hsinshe waiting to be distributed to small family processors who will cut off the stems.* The Taipei Times hosted a commentary on the low probability of anything like justice occurring in the Hung case.... The Criminal Code sets rather strict conditions for making a group of offenders “joint principal offenders.” *Apart from acting jointly in the commission of a crime, the group must also share criminal intent. The Blindness of Modern Economists
*Guest post by Dan Steinhart of **Casey Research**, who introduces Alasdair Macleod of **GoldMoney* Supposedly one of the top ten reasons to become an academic economist is that it gives you a chance to talk about money without ever having to make any. Also, you get to say words like “neoliberal” and "trickle down" with a straight face. The contrast between mainstream academic economics and "real world economics" has always been stark, but today the disconnect is so enormous that it seems the two have nothing at all in common. If you were to ask Paul Krugman and Doug Casey how to... more »
Even The Most Effective Member Of Congress Can't Win EVERY Vote
This year Congress isn't accomplishing much-- unless you count driving down its own favorability ratings as an accomplishment. But even in that dysfunctional situation, Orlando area Congressman Alan Grayson is being widely hailed as the most effective Member of Congress, working on both sides of the aisle and forging ad hoc bipartisan coalitions that have left Party leaders with their jaws agape. Apparently, they forgot the Audit the Fed coalition Grayson and Ron Paul put together to get around Party leaders several years ago. Last week, Party leaders had had it with Grayson. When... more »
Sunday Question for Conservatives
Might as well ask it, since it's been a controversy for the week: do you want Republicans to shut down the government unless the Senate agrees to pass and Barack Obama agrees to sign a bill to keep the government functioning into the new fiscal year that "defunds" Obamacare?
McConnell and Graham face Tea Party flack
Don't want to get my hopes up too high but it's not impossible that we could get rid of both Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham in 2014. To begin with, McConnell's Dem opponent Alison Grimes delivered a sharp blow to McConnell at the annual Fancy Farm hoedown in Kentucky. She's polling ahead of him already. Here's hoping that will hold. More importantly, McConnell is facing a Republican primary challenger who speaks Teabonics and is likely to win over the hard core angry cons who demand purity. Could split enough of the GOP vote to give Grimes the win. One can dream anyway. Meanwh... more »

I don't listen to Radio 5 Live very often these days. When I was something of a football fanatic I'd listen to any old match commentary on the station (most of which, if memory serves me right, seemed largely to consist of Alan Green slagging off various match officials). I've never listened to Nicky Campbell's breakfast show, have managed to avoid Richard Bacon's programme completely and have heard Victoria Derbyshire's show all the way through before only once (as Michelle of the Resistance might have put it). Northerntruthseeker Rant For Sunday, August 4th, 2013
Sunday.. and again time for my weekly rant and rave.... First, I have to expand on my last article where I led off stating that I am very disappointed in the basic fact that in spite of all of our efforts to reach the masses and awaken them fully to the dangers of the Jewish supremacists who want nothing better than to leave us all asleep while they take full dominion over this planet. It is important to clear the air and explain myself... The US announced a few days ago that it was closing down embassies in "hot zones" due to "security risks"... but as I told everyone in the RTS skype room, if "security risks" actually means "We've run out of money and can't pay our bills any more", then yes, it's true. ... more »

EDUCATION REFORM TAKES NOTES FROM THE MULTI-INDUSTRY PLAYBOOK ON CORPORATE OWNERSHIP
All multinational corporations use the same playbook to push privatizing a public good– whether it’s a human resource like clean drinking water or food; or a public service like education. The similarities between the various industrial giants aren’t coincidental. Each stage in their endeavors is part of their shared ideology, and their strategies, therefore, […]

The Post and Courier (Charleston, SC) has a long history of endorsing every education reform movement that doesn’t have any credibility: Teach for America? Sure. Charter schools? You bet. Al Qaeda threat ( unspecified of course ) suddenly requires Embassy closures in the Middle East / North Africa and even Asia and worldwide travel advisories ? ?
