The pile slowly dwindled over the years as the roses fell apart. It was time to put them to a better use than slowly falling apart in a box in the closet. Unicorn Skull

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 6 hours ago
What this report does for us is flesh out the legend of the unicorn. Perhaps it will become possible to recover DNA. As is made clear, we also have solid cultural information describing a small elusive population that was extant up to the end of the seventeenth century, after which they could have easily been hunted out by the natives without ever been disclosed to white settlers on the Atlantic seaboard. This skull certainly confirms the likely reality of the cultural information. It also provides the working template for the whole unicorn legend. Other aspects, such as ... more »

This encounter report is important. For the first time we are getting a creditable explanation for the activities been observed. We are also learning that the observations made on individuals last over a long time and that most remain oblivious. It is also apparent that thousands at least are affected as part of a continuing research program. Most will never wake up during the event. It is also apparent that this person has paid no attention to the literature at all and only woke up now. Yet she is informed of the Sirius connection which is also scantily reported even... more »

Historic Monsanto Counter Revolution?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 6 hours ago
The harsh reality is that Monsanto's clear mandate is to generate artificial revenue monopolies in the chemical business. They have hugely succeeded in doing this with the industrial farm model while dumping certain costs out onto the environment. These costs are been sustained though simple propaganda and obfuscation. It is obvious to everybody that mass production of cattle and pigs and chickens needs a market for the byproduct of animal manure. No such market presently exists. The obvious fix is to apply a direct tax on this manure and include imported meat to level th... more »

Is Apple's Fight on Agency or Most Favored Nations?

Martyn Daniels at Brave New World - 7 hours ago
Opening statement in US v. Apple by quartznews Sometimes it’s best to keep your dirty laundry inside and not show it to the world. We have seen some interesting misjudgements and statements over the last decade, first with the Google Book Settlement (GBS) and latterly with the Apple Agency Pricing. In both cases there appears to be a clash of cultures, misunderstanding between parties and momentum behind the search for a ‘silver bullet’ at all costs. What is interesting from the material released on day one of the agency trail, is how the search for any solution appears to have b... more »

8 Natural Mosquito Repellents to Get Rid of Mosquitoes by Elizabeth Renter Natural Society, 3 June 2013 In the winter, we complain about the cold. In the summer, it’s the heat—and the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can seriously add frustration to any outdoor activity, and if you’re like me, you want to spend as much time outdoors as possible when the weather heats up. While there are plenty of sprays, lotions, and gels that offer to keep the pests away, we all know these chemical baths are far from safe. How Milton Friedman Corrupted Capitalism

*I’m thoroughly enjoying reading David Stockman’s book* The Great Deformation: The Corruption of Capitalism in America*, and I can highly recommend it as a leading historical explanation of how American capitalism became anything but—from capitalism to cronyism in one century, with significant ideological way-stations on the way.* * One of the most obvious contemporary examples of America’s lack of a truly free market is its banking system: a system buttressed by government bonds, with interest rates set by an economic dictator and with regulations positively encouraging moral ... more »

The bulk of the claims associated with tumeric are generally well understood, but the interesting one is the plausible reversal of insulin resistance. This is common among the aging and is a number one target for correction. Yet we had no obvious protocol that did anything more than reflect an improving dietary behavior. Now we have a plausible tool to use. Since it acts naturally as a coloring agent it is often mixed with other spices. I suspect we need to experiment with it in order to fold enough into our diet. Perhaps onion, garlic and tumeric blended into mashed pota... more »

Scientists Concur that Man is Causing Climate Change??

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
This particular claim and the work involved is outrageous and a total insult to our intelligence. There are a handful of scientists that do have the knowledge to opine on the issue of climate warming and the anthropocentric conjecture. Good on them and it is unfortunate that they do not agree with each other at all. The rest of these papers make a simple pass at acknowledgment because they are all begging for funding from the great unwashed (i.e. you and I) and saying otherwise is the quickest way to kill funding and not getting the paper published. None have any climate cr... more »

College Republicans Question GOPs Relevancy to Them

2old2care at Because I Can - 1 day ago
There's a couple of article reported this weekend that doesn't paint a particularly good picture for the GOP when it comes to the longevity of the party - as it now stands/reacts. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday "I would say we're not closed for repairs, but open for repairs," he said. "That's the Republican party that needs to grow, that needs to win presidential elections, and needs to be a year-round permanent operation, which is what we're built on." Rest of the article not worth reading – SSDD. But it is important to note that it appears tha... more »

NY’s Rube Goldberg Plan for Teacher Evaluation

Jim Horn at @ THE CHALK FACE knows SCHOOLS MATTER - 1 day ago
When you have news that is too toxic even to go into the Friday afternoon news dump, you save it for Saturday when everyone is at the beach or at the park. That’s just what NY’s Broadie Ed Commish, John King, did Saturday, with the release of another anti child and anti teacher battle plan […]

I have my local Fox 5 affiliate on in the background for noise, not really sure why. In any event, I see a short piece on the “Common Core Controversy.” I’ll post the segment later if the link becomes available. Not a lot of meat to the piece, but I must say one thing: Tea […]

Happy Birthday to Morena Baccarin, 34. And a bit of good stuff: 1. Youth vote update: a column by Timothy Male of the Tacoma Park (MD) City Council and Rob Richie of FairVote on the 16 year old voting minimum. ViaHasen. 2. John Sides on Ted Cruz (rebutting in part my Salon column from the weekend). But see also the comment by Dave Hopkins (and for that matter see also the comment from Andrew Gelman). I may have more to say about it later; not sure right now. 3. An interview with David Mayhew. 4. And Ann Friedman on friendship. Well, friendship among women, but it works more gener... more »

A Letter From Andrew Hounshell

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Yesterday Andy made it official... he isn't running for the western Ohio seat now hold by John Boehner. Below is the letter he sent *DWT* making his announcement. It appears, at least at this point, that Boehner will once again have no opponent for 2014. Unless Steve Israel wakes up and realizes the value of running someone against the unpopular leader of the obstructionist Republicans in the House. It’s with great sadness and regret that I announce that I am withdrawing from the Ohio 8th District Congressional race for 2014. After much soul searching and discussion with my famil... more »

Handicapped Woman Calls 911 During Brutal Beating by Cops

Mark Daniels at GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING - 1 day ago
Kimberly Paxton Megan Graham, a Federal Way, Washington woman, called 911 to attempt to save herself from the cops who were beating her. Straight from the Bully’s Playbook, the partially deaf and cognitively disabled woman has been charged with felony assault on an officer. Graham said that she had stopped at a friend’s apartment building when a police officer pulled up behind her. She says that she responded politely but never heard the officer order her from his running vehicle, to get back into her car. That’s the point at which things got ugly, as the officer reportedly grabb... more »

GM wheat in Oregon may end Monsanto Madness

Genetically modified wheat: Discovery in Oregon field re-ignites a scientific dispute

A farmer's attempt to kill the plants with weedkiller had failed. Stunned researchers at Oregon State University couldn't help but question themselves. Once, twice, three times in early May -- in two different labs -- they analyzed DNA extracted from wheat plants grown on an eastern Oregon farm. With each test, the result was the same: The wheat had been genetically modified to resist glyphosate, the key ingredient in the herbicide Roundup.
But that didn't make sense. The last Oregon test plantings of a "Roundup Ready" variety of wheat developed by Monsanto, which makes the herbicide, had ended 12 years before.
After the studies, GM seeds were burned, buried six feet underground or shipped back to Monsanto, he said. Wide "no-plant" areas were maintained around test sites to prevent pollen movement from the GM wheat to other crops. Testing sites were checked two years after the trials for the presence of "volunteer" wheat plants that might have popped up.
A "gene flow" study done by OSU in 2005 showed it is possible for genetic traits to transfer from one wheat plant to another -- through pollen, for example -- but it occurred at a very low rate and the maximum range appeared to be 120 feet, he said. In addition, the GM wheat being tested was a spring-planted variety, while the wheat found in the Oregon field was a winter variety.
The Oregon wheat incident is a replay of 2006, when unapproved GM rice was found in a U.S. harvest.
The new Monsanto Protection Law says that GMO cultivars of any kind can be sold and grown anywhere without FDA approval or USDA restrictions and Monsanto (et al.) cannot be held liable if they later don't pass FDA approval (prove dangerous) or highly restricted by USDA (grow 'em anywhere, it's all good!).
Considering the shenanigans pulled to get this rider passed, I'd say Monsanto knew this was coming. So no, they won't be held liable for destroying the wheat export market. How nice for them. Farmers? Nobody gives a shit if they lose everything.

Protesters take on Monsanto and GMO foods in more 400 cities worldwide

Blast from the Past. At Daily Kos on this date in 2008Senator, VA Secretary Disrespect Troops on Memorial Day:
On Memorial Day weekend, Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) and VA Secretary James Peake stood side-by-side in Fairbanks, Alaska to showcase their opposition to--and lack of respect for--today’s newest veterans.
Speaking at the Disabled American Veterans’ 19th Annual Department Convention, Senator Stevens told the majority of America’s most recent war veterans that they had not yet sacrificed enough to have earned a GI Bill that would cover the full cost of their educations.

GMO Truthers need to be kicked out of the Progressive movement

A good tool that I used when I was in school for finding such studies and articles is PubMed, which is a search engine of sorts for scientific research.  Just running a quick search myself I found this recent review which showed no health hazards for GMO products.

Claim: GMO causes cancer, autism, diabetes, allergies, etc.
The GMO truther movement was born out of the Natural Movement, which is promoted by the Natural News website.  This movement has pushed every crackpot theory you can think of from fluoride-in-the-water to AIDS/HIV conspiracies.  Some of their nonsense like anti-vaxer conspiracies have taken root among some in the left (i.e. Bill Maher).  Because of this many of the GMO truther claims are strikingly similar to anti-vaxer crap.  You now even have some GMO truthers claiming that GMO causes autism and diabetes.  However, there is little to no scientific support for any of this (see here and here).
