ALEC Economic Rankings - Biased and Short-term Focus
Every year when ALEC puts out their questionable economic study there is a flurry of news articles touting that the biased partisan statistics of ALEC says that this state or that state was number 1 or number 3 or woe is me number 47 in ALEC's economic report. It's all a flash in the pan - cause recent reports that have rebutted the statistics in the ALEC economic report note that over the long run - ALEC policies that are prescribed as - economic building blocks in their report - over the long run are not beneficial to the state. As noted in a recent report by Good Jobs First and... more »
Shiny, Happy Faces: What I Learned By Revisiting 2008

Most questions are no good
There has been quite some discussion on TRF and elsewhere whether the question What is the feeling between the two magnets? There's something there. that an interviewer asked Richard Feynman during the Fun To Imagine program was a good or well-defined one. I am in the camp of the "resounding No" and in this text, I want to enumerate a few dozens of things that are often (or usually) wrong with the questions that are being addressed to scientists or that are even marketed as building blocks of the scientific process. Some of the observations apply outside science, too. I believe ...more »
THE JEWS
Shlomo Sand, of Tel Aviv University, shows in his book *The Invention of the Jewish People*, that most modern Jews do not descend from the ancient Land of Israel but from groups that took on Jewish identities long afterward. Dr. Eran Elhaik's research shows that the dominant element in the genetic makeup of European Jews is Khazar. *The Fraud Of The Jewish Race: New Genome Study Destroys Zionist Claim To Palestine!* * * *WHO ARE THE JEWS?*
The Fraud Of The Jewish Race: New Genome Study Destroys Zionist Claim To Palestine!
I am still under constant fire by those who stick to the notion that Jews are a distinctive race of mankind. There are reports, including a very damning scientific report released last December by a Jewish doctor, Erin Elhaik, that shows conclusively that the idea of the Jews being a separate race of mankind is absolutely wrong....The fact is that the Jews constitute many different races, and that their so called genetic diseases are a result of their constant inbreeding amongst themselves (trying to keep themselves "pure")....It is also a fact that their constant claim to Palesti... more »
The gang that can’t even mock Bachmann straight!
*MONDAY, JUNE 3, 2013* *John Wayne, not John Wayne Gacy:* During her six-plus years in Congress, Michele Bachmann has made a bunch of foolish flubs. She has also made a lot of significant and sulfurous political statements. If you want to mock her pointless flubs, there are plenty to choose from. But last Wednesday night, Rachel Maddow made a dumb mistake, even as she tried to tell us about *Bachmann's* dumb mistakes. Rachel was letting us have some fun at the other tribe’s expense. As she did, she managed to offer this oft-corrected howler: MADDOW (5/29/13): *On the left here, th... more »
Paul Craig Roberts, my nominee for the person of the first quarter of the 21st century, is so furious at the "prestitute" media's failing to report the real evils that our government has been committing and the complicity of certain prominant people and organizations that he refuses to begin their names with a Capital letter. I would like to sincerely thank new readers and contributors to comments who visited by way of the Age of Limits conference post just prior to this one. The links at the top of the blog will give an introduction to the purpose of Wit's End if you're not familiar with the science of ozone and its pernicious effects on vegetation - Greg Laden's guest post is a good introduction. WHAT’S WRONG WITH MSNBC: Good God!
*MONDAY, JUNE 3, 2013* *Part 1—An horrifically bad Wednesday night:* Friend, are you a liberal? If so, Wednesday evening, May 29, was a horrible night for you. Over on Fox, the hounds of scandal were braying. As always, it started at 5 PM, with the scripted inanities of The Five. But let’s move straight to the hounds of hell which were unleashed in prime time. At 8 PM, Bill O’Reilly’s first two segments dealt with the trio of so-called scandals which have come to define the American news agenda. First, O’Reilly interviewed Paul Ryan about the trio of outrageous events. He then dev... more »

You can listen here, great discussion, and a great call from a Portland area teacher. Good food for thought. At the same time Jesse and supporters are boycotting the MAP, and winning concessions, they are developing an alternative assessment structure based on their values as the actual educators. They are creating an assessment vacuum, so […]
Geeks, and the Havoc They Wreak
Welcome to Monday (a k a Terror Tuesday Eve). Well, we finally have all the proof we ever needed to show that They Really Are Out To Get Us. The following announcement has been popping up with odd regularity on the *New York Times* homepage lately: Truthers be told, my first thought on seeing this ad was that it was a plug for a new work of fiction by Friedman, something rip-offingly speculative, a cross between *Schrodinger's Cat* and the pulpy new Dan Brown best-seller. My second thought was that some *Onion*-inspired prankster had actually hacked the *Times* site and insert... more »

Mayan Internet Collaberation
Much as we will never recover everything, we are recovering a lot of the Mayan world. What is impressive is to see this become a collaborative enterprise in almost real time as it should be with all scholarship. If you can you can contribute and it will be happily received. Different minds see different patterns in much the same data. This encourages that and nicely generates cross fertilization. This is also a field in which we likely have critical mass and in which little can be missed. Vast civilizations have risen and then disappeared leaving us without even a nam... more »
Good Governance Ends Poverty
In fact, with good governance, poverty does end for all intents and purposes. Of course we can do much better even in the developed world. How do we know this? - just look at the stunning success of micro banking. Cashing up the poor and having them fix it all and provide governance at the same time solves the whole problem. Cashing them up can include credit mostly and a base allowance system so each individual can eat and sleep. Our own system limits the allowance to the elderly and the weakened, but it need not stop there and surely should not. The key is to build it in... more »
Tumeric Reverses Insulin Resistence
The bulk of the claims associated with tumeric are generally well understood, but the interesting one is the plausible reversal of insulin resistance. This is common among the aging and is a number one target for correction. Yet we had no obvious protocol that did anything more than reflect an improving dietary behavior. Now we have a plausible tool to use. Since it acts naturally as a coloring agent it is often mixed with other spices. I suspect we need to experiment with it in order to fold enough into our diet. Perhaps onion, garlic and tumeric blended into mashed pota... more »
Scientists Concur that Man is Causing Climate Change??
This particular claim and the work involved is outrageous and a total insult to our intelligence. There are a handful of scientists that do have the knowledge to opine on the issue of climate warming and the anthropocentric conjecture. Good on them and it is unfortunate that they do not agree with each other at all. The rest of these papers make a simple pass at acknowledgment because they are all begging for funding from the great unwashed (i.e. you and I) and saying otherwise is the quickest way to kill funding and not getting the paper published. None have any climate cr... more »
College Republicans Question GOPs Relevancy to Them
There's a couple of article reported this weekend that doesn't paint a particularly good picture for the GOP when it comes to the longevity of the party - as it now stands/reacts. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday "I would say we're not closed for repairs, but open for repairs," he said. "That's the Republican party that needs to grow, that needs to win presidential elections, and needs to be a year-round permanent operation, which is what we're built on." Rest of the article not worth reading – SSDD. But it is important to note that it appears tha... more »

Imported U.S. Mac and Cheese Label: ‘Made from GM Wheat’
Melissa Melton Is there more genetically modified wheat in the U.S. food supply than what we’ve been told about? After it came to light last week that unapproved, illegal GMO wheat from Monsanto had been found growing in a farmer’s field in Oregon, Japan and South Korea have halted U.S. imports. The Monsanto wheat had been field tested between 1998 and 2005, but Monsanto pulled it when an international outcry arose and many of the biggest wheat importing countries proclaimed they would not buy the biotech giant’s GMO strain. Now, a disturbing YouTube video has surfaced from Food... more »
Where's The Outrage?
That's what Bob Dole trumpeted almost twenty years ago, when he was running against Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski. Try as he might, Dole couldn't generate public outrage against Clinton. Susan Delacourt wrote last week that Conservatives can't seem to generate any outrage over the fact that their top security database -- the Constituent Management Information System -- was used as the source for most robocalls: Where was the outrage over their database being hijacked? Where were the reassuring words to supporters, or the thousands of other people whose names are in that data... more »
Washington Criticizes Syrian Self-Defense
image source Stephen Lendman Seventeenth century philosopher/political theorist/jurist Hugo Grotius perhaps helped inspire international law. In 1625, his "On The Law of War and Peace" said "Most Men assign three Just Causes of War, Defense, the Recovery of what's our own, and Punishment." War must be waged rightly to be just, he said. It must either respond to "wrongs not yet committed, or to wrongs already done." He called self-defense justifiable. Under international law, it's a fundamental right. It's inviolable. The UN Charter affirms it. Chapter VII, Article 51 states: No... more »

152 new allegations of sexual abuse leveled against BBC in Jimmy Savile scandal
Jimmy Savile, 1973 image credit: Beacon/Flickr Madison Ruppert The scandal surrounding allegations of sexual abuse at the BBC continues to get more insane as a whopping 152 new allegations of sexual abuse and harassment have been leveled by 81 current and former BBC employees. So far, not all that much has happened in response to the many allegations, aside from the resignation of BBC director General George Entwistle. 18 Signs That Massive Economic Problems Are Erupting All Over The Planet

Welcome *back* to Meet & Greet Monday, a regular series designed to grow our green community. Last week all Meet & Greet posts were removed from Reduce Footprints to ensure that your page ranks would not be affected by the linky. The posts will be listed in chronological order making it easy to go back and revisit blogs. Okay ... let's pick up where we left off ... [im... more »

Californians for Population Stabilization insists they're not a hate group and not about racism but they're fooling no one in California. Abe Wants to Intensify Efforts to Restart Nuclear Plants

Darrell Issa blows smoke on IRS witch hunt
This is why we have an uninformed electorate. The Hill (no I'm not linking to their stenography) dutifully transcribes Issa's crackpot allegations about the his latest time wasting attempts to make a scandal out of the IRS asking GOP front groups to prove they're not really political PACs in disguise. They dutifully quote Issa's blathering: "The indication is they were being directly ordered from Washington," Issa said, citing interviews with IRS workers in Cincinnati. "This is a problem that was coordinated, in all likelihood, right out of Washington headquarters. We have subpoen... more »

Protests In Istanbul: "Those Who Present Themselves As Conservatives Only Care About Profit Maximization"
Once a week I like to hike up to the top of the biggest peak in Griffith Park. It takes 2 hours but when you arrive, you have a 360 degree vista of Los Angeles. Griffith Park is one of the biggest urban parks in America-- 4,310 acres. I sometimes ask Roland if he thinks Angelenos will fight when the big developers finally get politicians corrupt enough to start allowing commercial development in the park. He thinks I'm crazy and that (commercial development) that would never happen. My first trip to Istanbul was early in 1969. It was a major resting spot on the Hippie Trail to In... more »
Week Off!
The recent storms have inflicted sufficient damage to Southern Man's summer (and soon to be full-time) employer that campus will be closed next week for repairs so rather than kicking off the summer session on Monday Southern Man has an unexpected week off which he will use that time to do some long-needed repairs to The Barn and try to finish the interior of The Woodshop. There, he said it in print. Now he *has* to do it. Right?
Flood
Last night's record deluge left Southern Land more or less submerged. Wolf Creek Lake was at record levels, high enough to put several feet of water in the future Fishing Pond. The future Garden Pond was also full of water. The Point was completely submerged. This picture was taken in the morning; by evening the water had risen to well beyond those woodpiles. A familiar sight as Southern Man tried to make his way into Southern City and to the Ancestral Manor. He had to go a good seven miles east before finding a road that was open all the way to the city. What choices for Christians in Syria?
'After the prayer walk Janssen had the opportunity to meet with Syrian Christian refugees, who told him how they came to flee their homes and villages. Their village was occupied by rebel forces, who proceeded to announce that they were now under an Islamic emirate, and were subject to sharia law. The Christian residents were offered four choices: 1. renounce the 'idolatry' of Christianity and convert to Islam; 2. pay a heavy tribute to the Muslims for the privilege of keeping their heads and their Christian faith (this tribute is known as jizya); 3. be killed; 4. flee for their... more »

At long last, the New York Times bends to our will!

In a recent interview, Noam Chomsky returned to a subject about which he has said a lot over the years -- consumer culture: The advertising industry is a huge industry, and anyone with their eyes open can see what it's for. First of all, the existence of the advertising industry is a sign of the unwillingness to let markets function. If you had markets, you wouldn't have advertising. 'The global warming hysteria began in the 1880s but was discredited when its prediction that CO2 would increase the mean global temperature by more than 1C by 1940 was not borne out. What gave it fresh life over the past two decades was the realisation by governments that it could provide a pretext for taxing citizens to unprecedented levels and by private entrepreneurs that government subsidies could supply a dripping roast. Of all the damage that politicians have inflicted on the public, the "green" scam has been among the most extreme. The Renewables Obligation, introduced in S... more »

The entire scenario was fabricated. At issue is falsely claiming Iran represents an existential threat. It's d... more »
