Barack Obama's Gallup approval rating is back to 51% today, which is back
up to the upper part of the range it's been in for the last couple of

Mayor Ford will survive the crack scandal
The most recent scandal to touch Toronto's mayor, Rob Ford, involves
allegations he smokes crack cocaine. Now, the allegations come second hand
in the Toronto Star, and while the Star is a very legitimate newspaper it
is also famously feuding with Mayor Ford. Some Toronto Star reporters saw a
video tape and based on what they saw concluded Mayor Ford was smoking
crack. Maybe they misunderstood, were intentionally misled or were just
mistaken in what they saw.

Neurological Diseases in Adults Growing
Rates of ADHD, autism, Parkinsons, and Alzheimers are growing, among other
diseases.
A couple of days ago I examined environmentally caused genetic damage in
children here.
Today I examine a recent study on rates of neurological diseases diagnosed
in adults.
The study found incidences of neurologically-induced death are increasing.
The diseases appear to be emerging earlier (i.e., affecting more people

Last year, the Blue Dogs only managed to elect one mangy freshman,
homophobic conservative Texas state Rep. Pete Gallego. Obama beat McCain in
his district (TX-23) 50-49% in 2008 and Romney beat Obama this last time,
51-48%. Gallego managed to edge weak GOP freshman Francisco "Quico" Canseco
96,477 (50%) to 87,255 (46%), after beating Ciro Rodriguez in a primary
runoff in this heavily Hispanic district that hugs the Rio Grande border
with Mexico from just north of Laredo to just south of El Paso.

Movie Review: Star Trek Into Darkness
Much better than expected, with lots of shout outs for us old-time fans but
also making it clear that this is an alternate timeline and Abrams is free
to take the series in unexpected new directions. Southern Man had carefully
avoided reviews and spoiler posts so he was delightfully surprised by The
Reveal. This was also Southern Man's first foray into IMAX 3D, which was
pretty awesome but left him with something of a headache. Perhaps the
excessive lens flare had something to do with that.

I mentioned that we had local election in Texas this past weekend...here's
one result I missed that may be of interest. One of the small-town school
boards around here had a one-vote election. No, not a one-vote
margin...well, that too. A one vote election.
It happened in the Lytle school district, in Lytle, Texas. It's a small

ANOTHER MISSILE OFFENSE TEST
On Wednesday, May 15 the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency (MDA) ran another
test of its Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) interceptor. The agency said the
test was a success.
The dummy (target) missile was launched from the Navy's Pacific Missile
Test Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii. The SM-3 interceptor missile was
fired from a Navy Aegis cruiser (USS Lake Erie). The MDA's cost for the
test was $32 million (not counting the costs to the Navy).
The SM-3 interceptor missiles cost between $12-15 million each. The
follow-on version of these missiles will double in price.
