May 11, 2013 Worldwide levels of carbon dioxide crossed 400 ppm this week,

For Tuesday I Walk to the Village
Election Day here in San Antonio. It's been a long time since we've had an
opportunity to vote -- a full six months.
In my part of town only two items on the ballot -- mayor, where Julian
Casto is going to be easily re-elected against a handful of obscure
candidates, and an open city counsel seat. That's been a fascinating race:
the two major candidates (there's also an obscure one) have been spending
lots of money and throwing a lot of mud. Fun! What's really been
interesting, however, is that the local newspaper has had a major vendetta
against one of them -- must have been a doze... more »
Who Cut Duffy Slack and Why?
A more than curious omission in just one of the Senate standing committee
reports on Senators Mac Harb, Patrick Brazeau and Mike Duffy and their
housing expense claims.
What distinguishes these three? Well, Harb and Brazeau claimed expenses
for residences that were actually within the provinces they were appointed
to represent, Ontario and Quebec respectively.
Duffy, by contrast, claimed living expenses for a "secondary residence" in
the Ottawa area while purportedly being resident in and representing Prince
Edward Island. Duffy's living allowance claims, if he was truly residen... more »

WE MUST RISE IN NON-VIOLENT REVOLT
There have been various periods of capital accumulation during US history.
The Robber Barons of the industrial age wrung everything they could from
the working class. The tactics they used then are very similar to those
used today by their descendants on Wall Street.
During the late 1800's to early 1900's in the US there was much movement
building in response to the greedy capitalists than ran the nation. Labor,
women's suffrage, farmers, Socialist, Communist, and other movements
created the national pressures that led to Social Security, unemployment

the HIV/AIDS story is being rewritten. This is the first film to present
the uncensored point of views of virtually all the major players; in their

conventional wisdom regarding HIV/AIDS is based. House of Numbers could
well be the opening volley in a battle to bring sanity and clarity to an
epidemic gone awry.

Bill Maher Gets Taken to the Mat on Islamophobia
On Bill Maher's *RealTime* show last night, journalist Glenn Greenwald
stood up to Maher on Muslims, Islam, and American foreign policy.
It's a long clip. Greenwald's retort comes in around the 7-minute mark.
What is particularly irksome about Maher's Islamophobia is the shallowness
of his historical view of Islam and the Middle East's rocky road to
democratic reform. Those of the Anglo-Saxon tradition usually recognize
our own democracy as anchored in the *Magna Carta Libertatum* signed by
King John in 1215.

Precipitation and Temperature with Tim Ball
Climate is about the surface heat engine. That heat is absorbed and held
by water, reflected a little by clouds and desert. Some is held indirectly
through water vapor in the atmosphere. The rest is in the ocean.
All this means is that tracking temperature is tracking a derivative of
heat shifts and terribly misleading. It was this understanding that led me
to infer that we have an increased flow in the Gulf Stream driving our
current warm spell in the Arctic. El Nino is about warmer waters first.

the Berkeley Buddhist Monastary.

paris, day two
Our only full day in Paris was mostly wonderful and a bit frustrating.
We started the day with a small breakfast in a cafe, as we like to do in
Europe, as opposed to eating at the hotel. Watching local people come and
go, I remembered how locals always stand at the bar for their little
morning coffee, and how we did that every morning when we were in Italy.
Later in the morning, after breakfast, I do the same, as one little

My first non-kit lens was the Tamron 18-200mm aspherical zoom/macro, which
for some strange reason I was never happy with. It performed as advertised

The Real News - Pakistan's Elections More Unpredictable than Ever
For a politician, there is nothing like garnering sympathy before a huge
election, so to see Pakistan's rising political star Imran Khan making an
emotional speech to voters from his hospital bed after he fell from a stage

Hey, whatever works for you. But the dignified thing to do in that
situation would be to rest and recover quietly, and stop the speech-making

results of the research were decided before the research was performed.

2016 Cycle Has Begun
Republicans are counting on incredibly bad leadership at the DCCC and the
DSCC to work magic for the GOP in 2014. Steve Israel has shown himself
either uninterested or incapable of winning and Michael Bennet seems
determined to take Patty Murray's incredible work that led to a
breathtaking string of unlikely victories in 2012 and turning them into a
smoldering ruin in 2014. Despite record contempt for Congress by American
voters and a recognition that Republican economic sabotage is undermining
everyone's financial well-being, the Republicans are likely to win back the
Senate and... more »

Too Stupid for Satire?
Is political satire too risky for American consumption? Luke O'Neil argues
in *The New Republic* that fake news has to go.
*Did you hear the one about the racist NRA president? You probably did if
you've been on Facebook or Twitter in the last forty-eight hours. A widely
shared article from the website the Free Wood Post headlined, “NRA
President Jim Porter: ‘It’s Only A Matter Of Time Before We Can Own Colored
People Again,’” has been making the rounds (44,490 shares and 66,000 likes
on Facebook), and rightfully so. It's an inflammatory, attention-grabbing

Creating the Conditions for War
Majia here: War can be fought using weapons or currency. War can also be
fought electronically. Electronic war may seem too futuristic and esoteric
to have significant 'real world' consequences when in fact broad-scale
electrical outages caused by cyber-attacks could destroy humanity within a
short time period.
Nuclear power plants are particularly vulnerable to electrical disruptions.
In this video, nuclear engineers Mr Arnie Gunderson and David Lochbaum
discuss how vulnerable nuclear power plants are to electrical disruptions.
Their analysis even addresses the many vulnerabilit... more »

No Warts, No Boils - Yet
No boils. Not a wart to be seen.
I was a little worried about what I might discover when I looked at myself
in the bathroom mirror this morning. Yesterday I voted NDP for the first
time ever. For this guy.
Now, in fairness, I didn't have a lot of choice. The B.C. Greens were not
running a candidate in my riding. But still, the NDP and, to top it off,
I had to vote in a church hall, fundamentalist at that!
I didn't really have a lot of choice, none at all in fact. Even if the NDP
seem a bit wobbly, the alternative party is steeped in dishonesty, deceit
and corruption. ... more »
Video: Timelapse satellite views of human destruction of the biosphere over three decades
By Jeffrey Kluger
(TIME) – Spacecraft and telescopes are not built by people interested in
what’s going on at home. Rockets fly in one direction: up. Telescopes point
in one direction: out. Of all the cosmic bodies studied in the long history
of astronomy and space travel, the one that got the least attention was the
one that ought to matter most to us—Earth.
That changed when NASA created the Landsat program, a series of satellites
that would perpetually orbit our planet, looking not out but down.
Surveillance spacecraft had done that before, of course, but they paid
attention ... more »
