North Carolina Republicans' Move To Shut Down Student Voting Provokes Social Unrest

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 18 minutes ago
The video above is from Rachel Maddow's Monday MSNBC show. It's another story of how Republicans-gone-wild are trying to turn back history, this time the enfranchisement of college students in 1971. Many conservatives have fought that right from day one by putting obstacles in the way of students voting in the towns where their colleges were located. Republicans in control of legislatures across the country are doing it again. In 2010, after the Tea Party takeover of the General Court of New Hampshire, which is what Granite Staters call their 400 member legislature, preventing co... more »

The reality of Palestinian peace proposals

The Israelis delved to understand how we can end the age-old, painful conflict. What red lines are they willing to be flexible on? What resolution will satisfy their aspirations? Where do they envision the future borders of the Palestinian State which they so crave? R. v. Colbourne, 2013 ONCA 308 holds:[14] On the basis that the case was argued at trial, the sole issue was whether the complainant consented to have sex with the appellant. Section 273.1(2)(b) provides that no consent is obtained where the complainant is incapable of consenting to the activity. [15] Before us, the appellant submits that the trial judge was also obliged to consider whether the appellant had an honest belief in the appellant's consent. When Columbus "sailed the ocean blue" and in American myth discovered the New World, 1492, the world population stood at around 500-million people. Somewhere in the early 1800's that doubled to a billion people. In the 1920's we hit the two billion mark for the first time. By 1959 we upped that to three billion. Andrew Coyne has an interesting take on the National Research Council's new mandate. The NRC was originally established to do the kind of research which business could not and should not do: Hence it is well-established economic principle that basic research is the sort of thing governments should fund. By the same token, however, government should not be in the business of funding applied research, that is research directed to commercial uses. Not only is this unnecessary — business can perfectly well fund this sort of thing on its own — but it inevitably tilts the pitch in favou... more »

Show Mom Some Love this Mother's Day and More

Mother's Day is almost here. It is a time of reflection for me each year. I reflect on how much I love my little girl and especially how grateful I am to have my mom in my life. I can't imagine how I would live my life without her guidance and love. She truly is the perfect mom for me. My mom isn't one for huge displays of love and affection, the simple things have always been her favorite. This year, although I will be able to spend the days before Mother's Day with my mom, I won't actually be able to be with her on the day. Breaking: Kerry Sees Transitional Syrian Government Without Assad

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says a transitional government in Syria would not include president Bashar al-Assad. Kerry said Thursday in Rome, where he was meeting with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, that the goal is a political solution agreed to by the Syrian government and those opposed to Mr. Assad. Kerry says that "clearly means" the Syrian president will not be part of the transitional government. Syria's main opposition coalition has long demanded that any peace process begin with Mr. Assad and top security officials leaving power. Earlier this week, Kerry ... more »
