What If Sun TV Gets on the Public Gravy Train?
What if the CRTC allows *FOX North* Sun TV a reserved seat at the cablevision
banquet table? Does that mean a start-up progressive TV outlet would be
entitled to the same consideration? If you're going to indulge a partisan
agit-prop outlet for the far right, on what basis should the progressive
left be denied the same opportunity?
The CRTC is being asked to politicize basic cable at a moment in which the
country is beset with a hyper-partisan government made worse by a
concentrated, corporate media cartel.
Is it sheer coincidence that the only party with a policy to dismember ... more »

Egypt tensions rise as footage emerges of police beating protester
Graphic footage of a naked Egyptian man being dragged across a street and
beaten by at least eight riot policemen during a protest in Cairo on Friday
night has intensifed popular fury at President Mohamed Morsi and sparked
calls from Egypt's opposition for "an end to this regime of tyranny".
The video shows Hamada Saber, reportedly a 50-year-old unemployed labourer,
lying on the ground outside the presidential palace in north-east Cairo,
with his trousers around his ankles, being beaten with batons and fists

Thousands more birds expected to be washed up in 'enormous eco crime'
Already more than 250 stricken birds, mostly guillemots, have been rescued
from beaches along a 200 mile stretch of the south coast, from West Sussex
to Cornwall.
The birds are covered in a heavy “glue-like” substance, believed to be some
kind of oil dumped from a ship, that makes it impossible for them to swim
and feed.
Conservationists fear this could just be the start of the “environmental
disaster”.

The Reckoning
As the present Masters of the Universe survey what they have wrought, they
dismiss the young as lazy and pampered. But Henry Giroux writes that,
across that universe, youth are in revolt:
As young people make diverse claims on the promise of a radical democracy
in the streets, on campuses, and at other occupied sites, articulating what
a fair and just world might be, they are treated as criminal
populations—rogue groups incapable of toeing the line, “prone to
irrational, intemperate and unpredictable” behavior.[16]

While it is well known that drinking wine in moderation can be beneficial

T. S. Eliot - Home Is Where One Starts From - Read By Ralph Fiennes
YouTube Video Description - [Channel: poetictouch2012]:
Ralph Fiennes reads from East Coker - the second part of T. S. Eliot's Four
Quartets - at The New Yorker Festival 2 October 2011:
Home is where one starts from. As we grow older
The world becomes stranger, the pattern more complicated
Of dead and living. Not the intense moment
Isolated, with no before and after,
But a lifetime burning in every moment
And not the lifetime of one man only
But of old stones that cannot be deciphered.
There is a time for the evening under starlight,
A time for the evening under lamplight

The first Watergate trial is over; two have been found guilty, and the
others put in guilty pleas. Everything in the trial has gone the way the

But it wasn't over yet. One more step remained: sentencing. And "Maximum

The Holy Trinity, a warship used to land the first Argentine forces in the Falklands War with Britain in 1982, has mysteriously sunk in an Argentine port
Arturo Puricelli, the defence minister, said the loss of the Holy Trinity
was due to "negligence in the best-case scenario, or an attack" aimed at
making the government look bad. He did not go into detail.
The destroyer, which was retired from active service in 2004, took on water

said.
The minister later said, however, that he was surprised that the ship sank
quickly while it was moored at the port.

USSR saved our asses. Between 1941 and 1945 three quarters of the armed

unleashed in the east, everything we officially celebrate about the Second
World War in Europe - the victories in the desert, the Normandy landings,
the doomed heroism of Arnhem, these were but sideshows to the bloody main

What Mattered This Week?

Health Transparency 14: More on Senior Citizens Drug Price Discount
There will be another meeting, the 16th meeting of the DOH Advisory Council
on the Implementation of RA 9502 (Cheaper Medicines Law of 2008) next week,
February 13 at the DOH. I have told the Secretariat that I will join the
meeting.
I think the new Department Order regarding the sharing of burden of the
mandatory 20 percent discount for medicines of senior citizens will be
shown to us members of the Council. Or has it been officially issued
already, I don't know.
In my blog post last December on this subject, there were two comments
there, one from Leonie Ocampo, the President of ... more »

Every Homophobe I Ever Heard From In South Carolina Is Interested In Sex With Men. What About Chris Culliver?

I never went to an NFL game in my life and I doubt I've even done a post
about football before. But I lived in San Francisco for the better part of
two decades and the 49ers football news did manage to seep through the
Hagel nomination battle noise. I was sad to read at AmericaBlog that the
49ers have disavowed the anti-bullying "It Gets Better" video they made--
and now say they were "tricked" into making. Two of the players, Ahmad
Brooks and Isaac Sopoaga, were uncomfortable being part of the video
project.
When four members of the San Francisco 49ers made an anti-... more »
Memphis Commercial-Appeal Continues to Ignore Reasons Behind Projected School Budget Deficit
Today the *Memphis Commercial-Appeal* has a big story on the 80-90 million
dollar hole in next year's school budget for the new "unified" Shelby
County Schools. Reporter Michael Kelly manages to point to a number of
reasons for the shortfall without ever mentioning the primary reason,
charter schools, the expansion of which creates inefficiencies throughout
the system that will cost taxpayers hundreds of millions over the next
decade if current charter plans continue.
Has Kelly not bothered to read the transition plan ( it is available on the
Web), which spelled out these facts i... more »
No-money-down mortgages are back: Here we go again
It’s 100% financing—the same strategy that pushed many homeowners into
foreclosure during the housing bust. Banks say these loans are safer:
They’re almost exclusively being offered to clients with sizable assets,
and they often require two forms of collateral—the house and a portion of
the client’s investment portfolio in lieu of a traditional cash down
payment.
In most cases, borrowers end up with one loan and one monthly payment.
Depending on the lender and the borrower, roughly 60% to 80% of the loan
can be pegged to the home’s value while the remaining 20% to 40% can be
