Alberta nurses gave vaccine to friends rather than see it destroyed
CALGARY — As Albertans were turned away from shuttered H1N1 immunization clinics in the face of a vaccine shortage, public health nurses in Edmonton provided after-hours shots to friends and acquaintances with doses they feared would otherwise go to waste, an inquiry heard. While much of the public uproar over preferential access to the 2009 pandemic vaccine has focused on the special clinic set up for the Calgary Flames and their families, on Thursday, Alberta’s health queue-jumping inquiry explored several cases involving Edmonton nurses.

Neonics hurt bees. Who knew?!
Earlier this week the European Food Safety Association issued a report concluding that neonicotinoids ("neonics") pose an unacceptably high risk to bees, and that the industry-sponsored science upon which regulatory agencies' claims of safety have relied are fatally flawed.   ...which is exactly what we've been saying since 2010, when we publicized the "leaked memo" sho

The Second Amendment vs. the First
After more than a week of residual buzz from radio host Alex Jones' now famous meltdown during a CNN discussion of gun control, it is worth taking a deep breath and considering the spectacle's two big lessons, especially now that the White House is pushing Congress to debate firearm legislation. First and foremost, it was surprising that anyone watching Jones was actually surprised.

Flu vaccine attitudes abroad differ from U.S.

Only the U.S. and Canada actually encourage everyone older than 6 months to get the flu vaccine.
Apparently, not a single country in Europe asks the general population to seek that same kind of protection, according to Robb Butler, the World Health Organization technical officer in vaccine preventable diseases and immunizations in the organization's Europe office in the Netherlands.
That's because global health experts say the data aren't there yet to support this kind of blanket vaccination policy
In a contrast to U.S. policy, the World Health Organization recommends only six "priority populations" get "the flu jab," as it's called in Britain.
These six groups are nursing home residents, people with chronic medical conditions like asthma, the elderly, pregnant women, health care workers, and children from ages 6 months to 2 years
We have 53 countries in our region that all have different recommendations based on different studies and evidence, and the depth of evidence in Europe right now is pretty limited
Michael Osterholm, director of the Minnesota Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance at the University of Minnesota, believes people should get the vaccine, but he worries that the current policy gives the impression the vaccine is more effective than it actually is.
"This enthusiasm to get more people vaccinated gets in the way of a critical look at the science," Osterholm said.
Osterholm co-authored "The Compelling Need for Game-Changing Influenza Vaccines," which came out last October. It is an exhaustive study of this country's vaccine war on flu.
Helmut Katz a day ago
Sadly and again a lot of dis-information...
First of all, a mismatched vaccination on a normally functioning immune system is definitely much worse than no vaccination at all. A new strain of virus has it easier to enter the organism and to spread more efficiently if the immune system has been trained to fight with the wrong weapons (mismatched antigenic memory (Hoskins effect, aka original antigenic sin) or bad kind of reaction (cellular/humoral) rather than to be simply idle and balanced for any pathogen that may come (first line of defense by complement system immunity). Think now how children fight easily dangerous diseases for adults like measles (our immunologic memory induces many inefficient cross-reactions). Flu usually kills when the immune system overreacts (cytokine storm) or badly reacts (dysfunctional cellular immunity helping bacterial infection).
Now, as a rule, and as a university immunologist, I would vaccine for flu only the people who really need it (typ. insufficient cellular immunity). Generalized vaccination is a non-sense and only help to speed up mutations.
Also, generally speaking, and I am not talking about tetanus (clostridium) or meningitis (neisseria) where fighting the disease is too risky, people should be more aware that useless vaccination strongly modify the way your immune system reacts to other pathogens. Think twice about getting a shot, the risk could be much greater than the benefit...

I missed the highlighted section first read through. The culturing of mutations is why the proliferation of routine antibiotic use is a public health disaster. Ditto use of germicide in contaminated fields, like routine handwashing. In the now missing Aug 13 2009 posts at opitslinkfest I recall contributions from a rancher/raw milk advocate and a retired Ohio farmer* which indicate cleanliness is important....but sterility imposed where it doesn't belong is worse than futile.
Not that our food production system itself does not abuse antibiotics : food animals are routinely supplied antibiotics as growth stimulants. And yes, that has implications for those eating those animals. Other oddities included spreading sewage on crops...and even radioactive toxins : coal ash.
I couldn't locate Jim B. at Care 2 ( CowBoss has been away for years ) but recalled his links revolved around the Watchers   'Sewerage Sludge' was one of his main concerns : turning farming into an open air biolab for viral warfare delivered with the produce.

The Gatekeepers is the unbelievable but true story of how the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and University of Georgia willfully published false and misleading scientific data to protect
their own political and financial interests. In the process, they destroyed two of Georgia's oldest
and most productive dairy farms and a leading research scientist who was working in the public
interest. Yet, what happened in Georgia is only the proverbial tip of an iceberg below which hides
a concerted national effort by EPA, USDA, the wastewater industry, and a network of land grant
universities to literally farm out disposal of the Nation's hazardous wastes by disguising them as
environmentally beneficial organic nutrients. EPA's biosolids programs are built on a
foundation of false claims and scientific fraud − shielded by special interests reaping untold
profits from concealing the toxic ingredients in processed sewage sludges.
