What is Noah thinking? Part 2
Noah Smith has replied to my recent post criticizing his use of median
household income to measure middle class living standards. He raises some
interesting questions, but some of them still leave me scratching my head.
Smith writes:
I don't understand the idea that "households have had to" compensate for
lower weekly wages (also the choice of weekly over hourly wages continues
to mystify me, since long workweeks suck, but OK).
Of course, no one literally had to compensate for the fact that their wages
were falling, but people do prefer to maintain (if not improve!) their

Greece may be first head-on challenge to Eurozone austerity
Yesterday Greece elected a new anti-austerity party, Syriza, to lead its
next government. New prime minister Alexis Tsipras has pledged to end the
austerity measures forced on Greece in the wake of the world financial
crisis. Syriza is two votes shy of a majority in the Greek parliament, and
announced a coalition last night with a right-wing Euroskeptic party, the
Independent Greeks.
Syriza campaigned on a platform of ending the austerity measures and
renegotiating its debt with the so-called "troika" of the International

Did you hear the one about the novelist and the PM? [updated]
Does everyone just feel obliged to speak up when a Booker Prize-winning

Aren’t they both entitled to talk?
Did any of the commentariat really have something to say? Or did they just

on which to lash their tongue?
So those opposed to the PM targeted the prize-winner. And those in his
favour targeted her. And no-one in the end was any the wiser about anything
much at all, least of all about any of the subjects raised by the
prize-winner, or in the PM’s re... more »

"The Line..."
“The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between
classes, nor between political parties either, but right through every
human heart, and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it
oscillates with the years. Even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one
small bridgehead of good is retained; and even in the best of all hearts,
there remains a small corner of evil. It is impossible to expel evil from
the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each

In the scene in question, Coretta Scott King confronts Dr. King about

Mrs. King has received an audiotape from the FBI. It includes recordings of
Dr. King having sex with other women.

Islamic State Shifting Car Bombs To Assaults On Government Forces In Iraq
Iraq has witnessed a dramatic drop in car bombs in recent weeks. There was
a two year low in the number of vehicle borne improvised explosive devices

Islamic State (IS) has been using VBIEDs more and more as part of tactical

provision about protecting South Korean Aegis destroyers in a revised
version of the Self-Defense Forces Law, which will be submitted to the

Broad sorry for minimum wage tweet per BBC Sport
The BBC report that England cricketer Stuart Broad is sorry for tweeting
that:
> "I've heard if you earn minimum wage in England you're in the top 10%
> earners in the world. #stay #humble."
>
Oddly the BBC don't say whether what Stuart Broad tweeted was true or not.
That's the trouble with the BBC, they really aren't interested in facts,
preferring the censorship of views that they and the other politically
correct zealots deem to be 'offensive'.
The Taiwanese Navy's Newest Ship: The Panshih
[image: Panshih AOR]Eager to moderate the threat it faces from an
increasingly sophisticated China, Taiwan has been investing heavily in
modernizing its naval capabilities.
As part of that effort, Taipei recently welcomed a U.S. Senate decision to
approve the sale of four Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates for its navy.
While Taiwan purchases a considerable amount of military hardware from the
United States, it also has a vibrant indigenous defense industry.

Ukraine Arms Embargo Could Delay Delivery of Russian Frigates
[image: Admiral Gorshkov (Project 22350)]The Ukrainian military equipment
embargo to Russia could cause delays in the construction of the Russian
Navy’s new class of frigates and slow a planned modernization effort of
Russia’s northern fleet, according to a Monday report in Jane’s Defence
Weekly.
Russia’s 4,500 ton Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates (Project 22350) is
powered – in part – by two M90FR gas turbines built by with Ukrainian
manufacturer Zorya-Mashproekt.
With the embargo in place the task has shifted to Russian manufacturer NPO
Saturn without the aid of the Ukrainians.

[image: Pentagon wants $350b for upgrades]The Pentagon is asking for $350
billion to upgrade its nuclear deterrent capability to handle growing
aggression from Russia.
“Russia and U.S. cooperation has ground to a halt,” retired Navy Admiral
William Fallon told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.
Updating aged nuclear deterrent capabilities, he said, “should be a top
consideration.”
Fallon, who retired in 2008 after commanding U.S. Central Command, is part
of a week-long visit by defense leaders to Congress to push funding for the
Pentagon before the federal budget is re... more »

Notes on the blizzard that wasn't -- at least not right where we are
*"We'd love to come, but the weathermongers have paralyzed us with fear."*
Well, I stayed up a good part of the night waiting for the blizzard that
didn’t come. And then, at about 3 A.M., the forecast was downgraded to
overcast with a chance of flurries. The kid in me was disappointed, but the
part that passes for an adult was really happy that I didn’t have to shovel

I don’t fault de Blasio, Cuomo, or Christie for their abundance of caution,
but enough already with the exuberant weathernoia of the television
forecasters.
Also, memo to the forecasters in their hermet... more »

The Mysterious Civilization of the Olmecs
It is additionally related that the Olmecs came originally from an island
to the North called Atzlan as well. Since crossing from even the American
Mainland and the Mississippi delta by sea meets that description and the
known existence of such a named city close by the copper fields of lake
Superior, it is easy to assign this to a remnant of the Atlantean world
ended in 1159 BC. We can assume ample earlier contact as well, but now
also reflect that this was an ideal refugia and that the establishment was
itself never driven by copper itself.
It is important to understand t... more »
