Russia and the Ottoman Empire went to war in October 1853 over Russia's rights to protect Orthodox Christians. Most of the fighting took place for control of the Black Sea, with land battles on the Crimean peninsula in southern Russia. The Russians held their great fortress at Sevastopol for over a year. [image: Foto: GMO agriculture is devastating Filipino farmers and they've made a video to share their stories. Monsanto gets them hooked and after a few years, they double their prices. Farmers are forced to take out loans to cover the cost of the seeds and chemicals. If the farmers can't pay their debts, their cattle and land are confiscated. Their farmland is depleted, their bank accounts are depleted and they can't eat what they grow because it makes them sick. With a lack of availability of conventional corn seed, what are these farmers to do? WATCH: https://www.youtube.com/watc... more »

A Request for Hep C Epidemiologists to Pay More Attention to Linoleic Acid Intakes

Some time ago I came across this interesting paper Because it seemed to beg the important question of linoleate intake, while addressing both fructose intake and insulin resistance, I took the (for me) relatively unusual step of contacting the corresponding author. I never received a response, but because my email summarised my view of the role of linoleate in chronic Hepatitis C infection (CHC) I have decided to reproduce it here. Dear Dr Petta, I am an independent Hepatitis C researcher looking at the relationship between HCV and diet, and I was interested by this paper which you... more »

Sometimes it was successful, sometimes it wasn't. Most of the time, its acts reflected the best values of the humanity; sometimes the other defenders of the best values of the humanity found ADL's decisions controversial or self-serving, to put it mildly. But as far as I know, the ADL hasn't ever joined the climate debate. Let me be somewhat more specific about this claim. The ADL rema... more »

The DCCC and the other nefarious Beltway committees encourage their candidates to burn their lists and wreck on-line fund-raising. They would much rather go back to the old model that leaves out small donor grassroots activists who they find way too independent of party bosses. One way of doing this is to floor e-mail boxes with hundreds of annoying, contentless communications that most people find offensive and depressing. We left the last post having worked through the basic conceptualisation of intersectionality. If you can't be bothered to trudge through its thousand or so words, simply put it is the appreciation of how different oppressions rooted in ostensibly discrete sets of violent (symbolically and physically) social relations can *intersect* and condition the lives of whole groups of people. Furthermore, activists involved in social struggles have to be conscious of and fight against the replication of oppression within discourses and movements committed to liberation.
