Waitangi Day : Something to Celebrate

The birth of the best little country in the world is being celebrated – not with the deserved pride of a great achievement – but, once again, with the full cast of cant and lies and humbug.

“Trickle down”

Here’s Thomas Sowell at his best.  A slice (but do read the whole column):
Years ago, this column challenged anybody to quote any economist outside of an insane asylum who had ever advocated this “trickle-down” theory. Some readers said that somebody said that somebody else had advocated a “trickle-down” policy. They could never name that somebody else and quote them, though.
“Trickle down” does exist.
It emanates from government.

A Frankenstein Economy
The ‘wealth effect’ — caused by rising asset prices — is the only thing keeping the economy from slipping back into recession…

Where Have All The Gold Holdings Gone?
Germany might own the gold, but it doesn’t have it. And when it comes to owning gold as a safe haven asset, it’s all about having it.

Wanted: Cheap Energy At Any Cost
Still, for as great as many German firms are at what they do, the German economy requires competitive-priced energy. Energy costs matter to all businesses.

By Greg Canavan | December 18, 2013 Australia finds itself in a very precarious economic environment largely because of weak politicians. That is, the Australian economy is in a spot of bother.

Canadian oil giant could transport crude oil to Gulf Coast via St. Lawrence Seaway if Keystone XL pipeline rejected - Environmental groups on the U.S. and Canadian sides of the border are keeping an eye on the massive Keystone XL oil pipeline planned from western Canada to the Gulf Coast of Texas: If it is not approved by the U.S. government, the Canadian oil giant that crafted the proposal could decide instead to ship its crude oil east through the St. Lawrence Seaway with ocean freighters, looping around the East Coast to get to Gulf Coast refineries.

Duke Energy told us their coal ash ponds were safe, but they were wrong.

On Sunday, a pipe underneath an unlined coal ash pond in Eden, North Carolina shattered and released 82,000 tons of highly toxic coal ash into the Dan River, which provides drinking water for residents. And what's worse? This wasn't reported until Monday night, and the story just came out TODAY.

Neighbors say coal terminals are hurting the coast and their health - PLAQUEMINES PARISH, La. - The historically African-American town of Ironton has fought for everything it has, including a highly publicized battle for running water in the 1980s. Now, neighbors in the historic community are taking on another fight, this time against a nearby industry that they believe is destroying their quality of life. “This is coal dust all over the car.” Cornell Battle said black dust coats just about everything in his Ironton community. “See how black it is? The lungs, if it's sticking to the truck like this, this could be your lungs,” he said. “We can't even sit on our porch with white pants on.”
