To wendle or not to wendle?

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 11 hours ago
The BBC editor in the not-so-hot seat on this week's *Newswatch* was blog favourite Mike Wendling of BBC Trending. I thought it worth transcribing the whole segment as I found it interesting. The subject under discussion was: Is the BBC News website (including BBC Trending) dumbing down? One thing I noted, in passing, was Samira Ahmed seeming to signal her view of one critic's complaint by introducing him as "fulminating". At least she didn't say "frothing at the mouth". As for Mike Wendling, well, I think he put up a pretty good defence of himself and of the need for light as ... more »

The Coronavirus is spreading

Infinity at 'Nox & Friends - 11 hours ago
This article sums it up well. I have nothing to add except to remind people to use hand sanitizer or wash your hands after touching money or any public surface. The incubation period of up to 2 weeks seems unusually long, so infected people spread it far and wide before they show symptoms.

The other three counties are Walla Walla, another swing county, Whitman, a blue county and Stevens, a red county. It's a winnable district, although Democrats have been doing badly there in recent years. Obama lost the district both times he ran and Trump crushed Hillary 52.2% to 39.1%. Whether or not that payoff is enough to make up for the additional debt burden is unclear. These are some key takeaways from a study we released in January 2020 in the journal ... more »

"It Is Our Fate..."

"Well, it is our fate to live in a time of crisis. To live in a time when all forms and values are being challenged. In other and more easy times, it was not, perhaps, necessary for the individual to confront himself with a clear question: What is it that you really believe? What is it that you really cherish? What is it for which you might, actually, in a showdown, be willing to die?...I say, with all the reticence which such large, pathetic words evoke, that one cannot exist today as a person – one cannot exist in full consciousness – without having to have a showdown with one’s s... more »

Can We Do It?

Robin Sears wonders if Canadians can come together to fight climate change. He writes: Great social change rarely succeeds as a partisan project. How did we forget that lesson where the climate crisis is concerned? It is not clear when it became a partisan club wielded by progressive activists against “knuckle-dragging” conservatives. It was not true when Margaret Thatcher was an early acid rain pioneer, or when Jean Charest fought for real environmental change at the Rio Summit, or when Brian Mulroney fought hard on CFCs. But sometime around the turn of the century many conserva... more »

India Has Fallen Far Behind China’s Military—Here are Five Affordable Steps It Can Tale to Secure Its Border With China

Sebastien Roblin at The National Interest - 15 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, Asia* This could work. Here's how. Since striking a landmark nuclear technology treaty in 2005 with New Delhi, Washington has steadily pursued an alliance with India, including technology transfers, modest but growing arms sales, and military cooperation including a 2016 shared basing agreement. The underlying rationale for that alliance? A desire to buttress India to counterbalance China’s seemingly meteoric rise as an East Asian military superpower. China-India relations never fully recovered from a 1962 war in which Chinese troops seized territor... more »

Introduced in 1898 as the .38 Smith & Wesson Special, it was meant to upgrade the U.S. Army’s firepower. The Army’s .38 Long Colt cartridge proved mediocre at stopping Philippine insurgents in close-quarters combat—the .38 Special was one proposed remedy. Free Will and Morality

Unknown at The Verma Report - 15 hours ago
Free will can be examined in two ways: first, we can examine the freedoms that a man requires to be free of all constraints; second, we can examine the freedoms he requires to be held morally responsible. The first criteria leads to a barbarian conception of man and the second criteria leads to a civilized conception. There is no evidence of the existence of free will, but if it exists, then it must be related to the flow of man’s moral principles. Freedom is good, but over-freedom—or freedom from all moral, social, and religious constraints—has negative consequences; it’s a form of ... more »
