North Carolina Fascist Mark Meadows Making His Move?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 16 hours ago
Buzz on Capitol Hill is that Mark Meadows may give up his safe House seat for a year-- if he lasts a year-- as Trump's chief of staff. No doubt he feels he won't be able to get anything done in a Congress firmly dominated by Democrats but could make a mark running the show for the chief executive described by Anonymous in *A Warning* as someone with severe attention deficit disorder. "Take, for instance," wrote Anonymous, "the process of briefing the president of the United States, which is an experience that no description can fully capture. In any administration, advisors would ... more »

*The Chicago Teacher Union vs. Charter Schools* This is the second week of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) strike. It’s the second CTU strike in less than 10 years, and it’s having wide and far-ranging repercussions. Even worse, if the strike persists for a few more days, thousands of CPS students will not be able to participate in the upcoming Illinois high school playoffs. This is especially unfortunate because these postseason athletic tournaments are prime opportunities for CPS students to showcase their athletic abilities and receive scholarship offers from college scouts a... more »

"Israel aiding Syria's Kurds, advocating for them with U.S"

Penny at Penny for your thoughts - 16 hours ago
* I'd saved this a few days ago, had intended to do more with it but cannot at this time.* *"Syria's Kurds" is the perception management version of who is in Syria's north. Some of them might still be part of the original population. BUT many of Syria's actual kurdish population fled when ISIS arrived. Going to Turkey or to Iraq. They were replaced by PKK militants who've been labelled by the 5 eyes alt and msm as the "Syrian Kurds", this is an intentional misrepresentation of reality. * *Ynet* *Israel has maintained discreet military, intelligence and business ties with the Kurds ... more »

*Does one ten thousandth of the atmosphere control Earth’s thermostat?* There exists a belief that we are living in a world threatened by an important molecule that makes life possible on this planet⏤carbon dioxide. To save the earth many believe we must transform society by shutting down the use of oil and natural gas which has improved life of modern society. The arguments in support of this belief are the math equations or climate models claimed to simulate how nature does control the Earth’s. Tim Severin is almost legendary among modern explorers and historians. From his college days, he's specialized in studying an ancient voyage of discovery or some other historical travel narrative, and recreating it using technology of the period and in as practical a way as possible. In doing so, he's dispelled many myths, but he's also proved that many stories thought to be myth and fable were, in fact, firmly grounded in reality. (Two of the most fascinating are the legend of Jason and the Golden Fleece, and Ulysses' voyage from Troy to his homeland of Ithaca, both re-enacted ... more »

On The Importance of Man’s Absurdity

Unknown at The Verma Report - 16 hours ago
Thomas Hobbes describes in *Leviathan*, an ideal commonwealth that can be established through a social contract and mimics a human body which has at its head, a sovereign with absolute power over the masses. Every person living in the commonwealth has a fixed role to play, like the organs in a human body. Is it possible for human beings to live in a society where they play fixed roles and have no freedom? Hobbes does not rely on morality to keep the masses in place—he thinks that people will enter into a social contract with one another to establish a commonwealth ruled by a soverei... more »

Turkey Threatens to Buy Russian Su-35 Jets If It Can’t Get F-35 Stealth Fighters

Sebastien Roblin at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * A mistake or a blessing? We take a look. In recent weeks, reports have made clear that Ankara stands ready to purchase 36 of Russia’s 4.5-generation Su-35S fighter (down from an earlier suggested 48)—heralding a potential sea-change for a country which has operated American jet fighters from the F-84 Thunderjet to the F-16 Fighting Falcon since the 1950s. Turkey had been looking to replace its Terminator 2020 jets—heavily modernized F-4 Phantoms—with F-35 Lightning stealth fighters, which it was also building components for. The Maginot Line: The 'F-35' of World War II Never Stood A Chance

*Rune Scott* *History, Europe* According to the standard telling of the tale, the Maginot Line, the most expensive military project ever undertaken at the time—the F-35 of its day—was a mighty, nigh-unassailable fortification, whose only flaw was that it did not extend along the whole French frontier. Why Iran's Military Is So Focused on Missiles (Think History and a War with America)

Saheb Sadeghi at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Saheb Sadeghi* *Security, Middle East* The increasing number, precision, range, and lethality of Iran's missiles indicate the seriousness of the Iranian government’s determination to strengthen its defensive capabilities as one of the most important pillars of its national security. These Five Pistols Explain Why .45 Caliber Handguns Are So Popular

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 16 hours ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * Semi-automatic pistols have greatly improved over time. *Key point:* There are more choices of .45 ACP pistols than ever before. The .45 Automatic Colt Pistol round, or .45 ACP as it is commonly known, is fairly controversial. Invented in 1905 by prolific firearms designer John Moses Browning, the .45 ACP was the standard caliber of the Colt M1911 pistol, and remains so to this day. A heavy, subsonic bullet, a typical .45 ACP weighs twice as much as the 9mm Luger round and delivers a third more energy. Today, advances in bullet technology means a 9mm... more »

Then we can classify them all into dangerous and also into passive. By the way. the same phenomena likely holds true for male homosexuality at least. It seems like almost every day, another superrich American is offering their thoughts on taxing the rich, generally, and Elizabeth Warren’s wealth tax idea, specifically. Helpfully, I recently podcast chatted with AEI economist Michael Strain about wealth inequality and what, if anything, public policy should do about. Her... more »

Flak Cannons Could Pose A Huge Threat To The F-35

Michael Peck at The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*Michael Peck* *Technology, Americas* It's not only high-tech threats that pose a problem. *Key point:* Ground fire still poses a threat to U.S. aircraft—no matter how advanced. Surface-to-air missiles—those high-tech killers of aircraft—tend to get all the attention. But the U.S. Air Force reminds us that old-fashioned anti-aircraft guns are still a threat. Hence the genesis of a new Air Force research project to locate flak batteries in the same way that ground troops use technology to identify the location of mortars and snipers. The goal of the project, titled "Target ID of... more »

There Is A Reason Why Dirty Harry Loved Smith & Wesson's .44 Magnum Revolver

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * The information you want. *Key point: *The most powerful—and practical—handgun still in production. Few handguns combine power and cachet, but the Smith & Wesson Model 29 manages to do so with ease. Described by fictional San Francisco Police Department Detective Harry “Dirty Harry” Callahan as “the most powerful handgun ever built,” the Model 29 indeed held that slot for many decades. Although more powerful handguns and ammunition types have since appeared, the .44 Magnum Model 29 is probably the most powerful—practical—handgun still in production. ... more »

America's Air Force Would Have No Problem Destroying North Korea

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Asia* But at what cost? *Key point: *The main risk isn't to America's military, but to U.S. allies and the homeland. In any conflict in the skies over North Korea, the U.S. Air Force will likely follow a familiar pattern. First, it will need to sweep the skies of enemy fighters—not a difficult prospect considering the decrepit state of the North Korean air force. Concurrent with that will be a campaign to shut down the country’s command and control and air defense systems, and finally a close air support and interdiction campaign designed to support fr... more »

Skip the Movie: We Can Tell You Why Japan Was Crushed at the Battle of Midway

James Holmes at The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*James Holmes* *Security, * The end of World War II. *Key point: *Groupthink can kill a military. A devil’s advocate is a precious commodity. That has to be one of the takeaways from revisiting the Battle of Midway seventy-five years on, and it should be etched on the internal workings of any martial institution that wants to survive and thrive amid the rigors, danger, and sheer orneriness of combat. Despite Japanese mariners’ tactical brilliance and élan, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) leadership was prone to such ills as groupthink and strategic doublethink. Worse, the IJN f... more »

China and Russia's Worst Nightmare: America Starts Selling Nuclear Submarines

Harry J. Kazianis at The National Interest - 20 hours ago
*Harry J. Kazianis* *Security, Asia* Would Washington ever consider it? *Key point: *America's allies are its greatest strength. There was a time a few years ago, however brief, that some of us Asia-defense nerds had an unorthodox idea to tip the military balance in Asia. Quite a few people thought it was crazy and highly unlikely, but an idea none the less worth considering. It went a little something like this: in order to lessen the impact of *China’s massive naval build-up* and negate the lethality of *Beijing’s growing anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) battle networks* in th... more »
