Republican Billionaires Still Shoveling Tens Of Millions Of Dollars Into Congressional Races

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 52 seconds ago
*Charles Schwab, a criminal who isn't being charged* Not even conservatives are eager for voters to know rotgut billionaire criminals like Charles Schwab and Steve Wynn are financing their elections. That's why Republicans are so enthusiastic of making sure the anti-transparency Citizens United ruling stands-- and why progressives are so eager to dispense with it. (New Dems and Blue Dogs are less gung-ho about campaign finance reform. Conservatives are conservative, no matter which political party they're using at any one time as a vehicle to advance their careers. *Forbes* publish... more »

Media and Democrats Bash Trump over US Killing ISIS Leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Russians Are Not Convinced It Happened.

Information Liberation and ZeroHedge at Need To Know - 21 minutes ago
There were 3 previous instances where the international media reported Baghdadi's death, and the US military gave Baghdadi a burial at sea, making it impossible to prove that he was executed. It seems that reporting the killing of hated enemies is useful to build popularity among the folks back home.

The Seawolf-Class Submarine Is Incredible (As in the F-22 of Submarines)

Kyle Mizokami at The National Interest - 24 minutes ago
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, * But the costs were too much to keep building them. *Key point:* The collapse of the Soviet Union changed the Navy's calculations. The Seawolf-class submarines were envisioned as the best submarines ever built. Designed to succeed the Los Angeles–class attack submarines and maintain America’s edge in the underwater domain, the class suffered from cost overruns and the collapse of the Soviet Union. While still some of the best submarines ever built, they were built at reduced numbers. In many respects, they are the F-22 of submarines: widely considere... more »

A hymn that’s good for all day

O God, creation's secret force, Yourself unmoved, all motion's source Who from the morn till evening ray Through all its changes guide the day. Grant us, when this short life is past, The glorious evening that shall last; That, by a holy death attained, Eternal glory may be gained. To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, May every tongue and nation raise An endless song of thankful praise. *Robert Farley* *Security, Europe* And they will not be cheap to fix. *Key point: *More than Russia's sole aircraft carrier is in bad shape. Over the past year, the Russian Navy has undertaken several high visibility operations, most notably the deployment of the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov off the coast of Syria, and the launch of cruise missiles from ships based in the Caspian Sea. TON: Why China Might Crush America in the Trade War

*Dennis P. Halpin* *Economics, Asia* [image: https://pictures.reuters.com/archive/USA-STOCKS--RC197EE52700.html] Bad news. *Key point:* Beijing is targeting American farmers in order to undermine their support for the trade war. *The Hill:** Democrats fume over being kept in dark on al-Baghdadi raid* Democrats are furious they were not told ahead of time about the raid that killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and are now pressing for a full briefing on what happened. Trump and his deputies have defended the decision not to notify Democrats, accusing them of leaking. The Pitfalls of a Borderless Utopia

Unknown at The Verma Report - 1 hour ago
A borderless world is utopianism of the most primitive kind—it presumes that people can live in harmony with everyone. The truth is that human beings have a natural desire to live in the company of people with whom they share some qualities and interests. That is why we prefer to live in political communities. But for building a political community, it is necessary to place restrictions on the entry of people who are, for some reason, incapable of being part of that community. Therefore, it is imperative for a political community to regulate immigration. A nation is a political comm... more »

The military deep state

Andrew Koppelman at Balkinization - 1 hour ago
One of President Trump’s signature measures is his effort to purge the federal bureaucracy, what he calls the “deep state,” of longstanding institutional commitments that are inconsistent with his political program. Trump’s crude buffoonery should not keep us from seeing that he has an implicit constitutional theory: the President is the voice of the people, and the institutions of government that were there when he arrived, to the extent that they embody an ethic that impedes his goals, are the enemies of the people. It is that inconsistent ethic that makes “deep state” a ... more »

*6 Ways Trump Has Sold Out America* One of Donald Trump’s main campaign promises was to put “America First” and defend American interests above all else. It was a theme that riled up his base at rallies across the country, but this has turned out to be yet another big lie. At every turn, he has sold out America for his own personal interest. Instead of putting America first, here are 6 ways Donald Trump has put himself first: 1) *He has encouraged foreign powers to interfere in our democracy.* Trump is using the power of the presidency to encourage foreign leaders to interfere... more »

His key points: • Legalize marijuana in the first 100 days with executive action • Vacate and expunge all past marijuana-related convictions • Ensure that revenue from legal marijuana is reinvested in communities hit hardest by the War on Drugs • Ensure legalized marijuana does not turn into big tobacco That last two points got particularly huge applause. Can the Senate Subpoena the President?

Gerard N. Magliocca at Balkinization - 4 hours ago
Suppose the House impeachment managers subpoena the President in the Senate trial. Would he be legally obligated to obey and be questioned? The Chief Justice may have to decide this issue. An impeachment trial is not a criminal trial, where the privilege against self incrimination applies. The Senate proceeding is more analogous to a civil trial, where there is no such privilege unless the testimony in question might plausibly lead to criminal charges. As far as I know, neither President Johnson nor President Clinton were subpoenaed in their trials. I'm not sure why. The managers ma... more »
