Is Britain’s Infantry Fighting Vehicle Ready for 21st Century Warfare?

Charlie Gao at The National Interest - 14 minutes ago
*Charlie Gao* *Technology, Europe* [image: By davric - collection personnelle, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1472715] Or is it time to head to the scrap yard? Britain’s FV510 Warrior IFV has never had a good record as an infantry fighting vehicle. While its protection and mobility are decent, the armament has long been maligned by analysts and its users. Compared to contemporary American and Soviet IFVs, the Warrior’s turret lacked any kind of FCS or stabilization. The 30mm gun was also clip-fed compared to the box or tray fed American and Soviet... more »

Politics Turn Nasty In Canada

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 49 minutes ago
*Bloomberg:* *Politics Turn Nasty in Canada as Trudeau and Rivals Get Personal* For polite Canada, the latest federal election campaign is turning out to be pretty nasty. Even before bombshell pictures of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in blackface makeup surfaced on Wednesday, his Liberals and their main opposition Conservatives had foregone the usual niceties in favor of tactics more common to the hyper-partisan mud slinging contests south of the border in the U.S. To some, it’s been a cynical race to the bottom where leaders have focused on inflicting maximum damage on their r... more »

Does Elizabeth Warren Even Understand What Real Corruption Is?

Francis Menton at Manhattan Contrarian - 1 hour ago
A few days ago I had a post evaluating Elizabeth Warren as a candidate for President. Needless to say, the evaluation wasn’t very favorable. But that post touched only lightly on a subject that Warren has sought to make a centerpiece of her campaign, namely political corruption. I thought that that subject deserved a post of its own. First, some background. If you have been reading Manhattan Contrarian long enough, you know my view that government is inherently corrupt. The government consists of human beings, and it’s just part of human nature that people will act in ways to help t... more »

Can an F-35 Be Turned into a Hypersonic Aircraft?

Michael Peck at The National Interest - 2 hours ago
*Michael Peck* *Security, * Not if it never gets built. *Key point: *Britain won't be competing with America over aircraft anytime soon. Can an F-35 be turned into a hypersonic aircraft? News last month that Britain is boosting its hypersonic weapons program didn’t come as a surprise. Many other nations are doing it. What caught everyone’s attention was that there are plans to rework the jet engines on the 1990s Eurofighter Typhoon—which propel the aircraft to Mach 2—into hypersonic engines that could achieve Mach 5 or faster. China's QBZ-95-1 Assault Rifle: A Killer Gun Like No Other or a Joke?

No-first-use, or the idea that the United States should not use nuclear weapons unless first attacked with them, has gained traction everywhere from the House Armed Services Committee to the Democratic presidential debates. Proponents of a no-first-use policy present it as a common-sense solution that would reduce the likelihood of nuclear war and signal U.S. leadership on nuclear proliferation. The Key to Understanding Vladimir Putin

*John Evans* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] It is common to ascribe America’s growing difficulties with Russia to President Vladimir Putin personally, but the sources of Russian discontent predate Putin’s presidency. The Alarming Decline In Avian Wildlife

Scott Beers at Science 2.0 blogs - 3 hours ago
Habitat loss, climate change, unregulated harvest and pollution have all contributed to severe ecological challenges encompassing countless species around the world. The inordinate focus on species extinction has, ironically, led to an under appreciation of the environmental dangers caused by the loss of abundance within still common species. Indeed, these significant declines can degrade ecosystem integrity, reducing vital ecological, evolutionary, economic and social services that various organisms provide to their environment. read more

*“Roofs”* by Chet Raymo "It would be well, perhaps, if we were to spend more of our days and nights without any obstruction between us and the celestial bodies, if the poet did not speak so much from under a roof, or the saint dwell there so long." Good advice, Mr. Thoreau. I came here to this island for its unobstructed sky. Built a house called Starlight House. I'm no poet or saint, but I settled in to nurse what slender gifts I have. UFOs confirmed by Navy

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 5 hours ago
The US Navy has confirmed the UFO footage caught on tape by US military members is authentic. These leaked unidentified flying object (UFO) sightings show the flying objects skyrocketing through air space used for Naval training in 2004 and 2015. Two of these US military UFOs videos were published by the New York Times and Blink 182 member Tom Delonge's research org in 2017. Delong has long been interested in aliens and UFO video.
