Sitting on Ready: Colleges Brace for Deportation Uptick

LaMont Jones at Diverse - 13 hours ago
Undocumented students at U.S. colleges and universities have faced growing uncertainty in recent years – even those who have somewhat more security through their participation in the imperiled Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program – and things just got more tense with the Trump administration’s recent decision to step up enforcement of deportation orders.

BBC news

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 13 hours ago
The BBC has been in the news quite a bit this week. Here's a round-up of some of those stories. 1. Channel 4 has complained to Ofcom about the BBC's plans to expand its iPlayer streaming service to allow programmes to remain available for a year rather than for 30 days. Channel 4 believes it could harm the BBC's rivals (including itself). 2. Though ending free licence fees for most over-75s, the BBC is spending more on its 'talent' this year than it did last year, with the amount spent rising from £148m to £157m. 3. There are now three women in Top 10 of the BBC Rich List - Cla... more »

Michael Stanley at Lakeside

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 13 hours ago
Last night the program at Hoover was Michael Stanley and friends. ?? No, we'd never heard of him, but he was big in the late 70s and 80s, disbanding his MSB in 1986. He's sure popular around here (Hoover was packed) and he's still working in the Cleveland area on TV and radio. The group had a fabulous pianist, 3 guitars, 2 drummers, and our own wonderful Eddie Caner on violin who grew up in Lakeside. I'm surprised that violin didn't catch on fire he was so hot. For years the rules at Hoover were no food or drink, but icy bottled water was being sold--perhaps because of the heat. ... more »

Depiction of the Stone Age by Viktor VasnetsovJared Diamond’s *The Third Chimpanzee: The Evolution and Future of the Human Animal* is on human evolution and human behavior— but a significant chunk of the book, especially the final chapters, are focused almost entirely on promoting the modern ideology of environmentalism. Sounding like a fanatic environmentalist, Diamond blames mankind for all kinds of environmental destruction and mass extinction of animal species. In one passages, he contemplates if things on this planet could improve if every human were to die tomorrow. Here’s an... more »

Lessig, "translation," and institutional legitimacy

Sandy Levinson at Balkinization - 14 hours ago
Larry Lessig is clearly one of the most interesting and imaginative scholars within the legal academy, and he has written a book that fully vindicates the enthusiastic blurbs it receives (from myself, as well as others). Richard Fallon describes the book as “a marvel of learning, insight, and edifying provocation.” He is right in every way. Pam Brandwein and Jack Balkin have offered excellent summaries of Lessig’s basic argument in their postings in this symposium. His notion of “fidelity” requires attentiveness to the “meaning” of the Constitution, and the presumption is that... more »

No Time For Folly

Robert Reich asks his readers to perform a thought experiment: The tyrant and the oligarchy have convinced many voters the reason they feel powerless and economically insecure isn’t because the oligarchy has taken most of the economic gains and overwhelmed the government with its money. It’s because the country has been taken over by undocumented migrants, Latinos, African Americans and a “deep state” of coastal liberals, intelligence agencies and mainstream media. This is rubbish, of course, but the tyrant is masterful at telling big lies and he is backed by the oligarchy’s money... more »

Yes, With Climate Change, Our Children Can Grow Up In A World Of Nature, Wonder - And Prosperity

Robert Walker at Science 2.0 blogs - 14 hours ago
It's so sad when people think they can't have children because of climate change. Two years ago most of these parents weren't despairing; they didn’t even give it thought. Climate change was not an election issue in the US elections in 2016, or the UK elections in 2017 even. Now it is one of the top issues for most governments worldwide. This gives so much more hope for the future, for those who have been following it all along, but many of those who have just begun to give it serious attention for a couple of years are already despairing only three years after the Paris agreement.... more »
