It makes me sad that Beto's not running for the Texas Senate seat in 2020. If he changes his mind and does I'll send him the same amount. Beto's got musical taste and last week, in San Francisco, he was interviewed for the *It's All Political* podcast. If You Want To Seem More Dominant, Tilt Your Head

Social psychologists say we send out social cues not just with our facial expressions, but with the tilt of our heads as well. Trump Should Make a Deal with China Before It’s Too Late

President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs of 25 percent on all Chinese goods not currently subject to surcharges means that imports from China might soon become a lot more expensive. But the potential ramifications of a prolonged U.S.-China trade war go far beyond consumer prices. The Steep Climb Of Vertical Farms And Where Urban Ag Might Be Revolutionary

Marc Brazeau at Science 2.0 blogs - 8 hours ago
A few years back in an essay titled: “Why I’m empowering 1,000’s of millennials to become #realfood entrepreneurs through Vertical Farming”, Elon Musk’s younger brother Kimball announced that he was going to invest in urban farm incubators in multiple cities. While there is certainly room for vertical farms in urban food systems to supply hydroponic greens and herbs to upscale grocers and restaurants, Musk’s ambitions go far beyond that. The Kitchen’s mission is to strengthen communities by bringing local, real food to everyone. With our commitment to local food sourcing, our rest... more »

Cycles, not Carbon Dioxide, Control Climate

Principia Scientific by Viv Forbes | June 12, 2019 The war on hydro-carbon fuels will have no measurable effect on global temperatures. It's Official: China Wants to Be an Aircraft Carrier Superpower (As in 6 Carriers)

Mark Episkopos at The National Interest - 8 hours ago
*Mark Episkopos* *Security, * China’s rush to rival the United States as an aircraft carrier superpower reflects Beijing’s conviction, inculcated after the perceived humiliation of the Third Taiwan Crisis, that China can neither defend its eleven-thousand-mile-long coastline nor project seapower throughout the East Asia region without fielding a modernized carrier fleet; specifically, six of them by 2035. China is forging ahead with the construction of its third aircraft carrier in under a decade, highlighting the scale of Beijing’s maritime ambitions. A *series of satellite* im... more »

Mount Everest: 11 Climbers Dead in 16 Days (What Happens to the Bodies?)

Jonathan Westaway at The National Interest - 8 hours ago
*Jonathan Westaway* *Politics, Asia* [image: Reuters] Not an easy question. Climbing Mount Everest has long been a metaphor for extreme achievement – something that is both hard and hazardous. And, over the years, the bodies of those seasoned Sherpas who perished in accidents or climbers who succumbed to the cold and altitude have testified to just how dangerous it is to attempt to climb to the 8,848-metre summit. But recent overcrowding has led to a spate of “blue sky” deaths on the mountain. Snaking queues of climbers above 8,000 metres in the oxygen-depleted death zone have b... more »

Of all the workhorse weapons in the Allies’ World War II arsenal, from the American M-4 Sherman medium tank and jeep to the British Handley Page Halifax bomber and 25-pounder field gun, none was more widely and effectively deployed than the Douglas C-47 transport plane. The Trouble With The College Board's New Adversity Score

Peter Greene at CURMUDGUCATION - 8 hours ago
The College Board has for years been trying to rescue its floundering flagship, the SAT. The newly announced adversity score is just the latest unforced error from the testing giant. Just keep telling yourself that For almost a decade, the company has been fighting for market share. In 2012 , it hired David Coleman, fresh from his work as architect of the language portion of the Common Core Standards. The theory was that Coleman could lead a redesign of the test that would bring it in line with the Common Core, so that students steeped in the new standards would be well-prepared for ... more »

*THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2019The children play in the "dirt:"* We first heard about Trump's remarks while watching Chris Matthews play Hardball. Chris was highly exercised. We were reminded of the remarkable evenings in early 2000 when he went on and on, then on and on some more, misstating every possible fact about Candidate Gore's 1996 visit to the Buddhist temple. Back in early 2000, the liberal world just sat there and took it. Everyone wanted to get on Hardball back in those days!
