Trade War Battles: Latest Conflicts

kclaussen at Lawfare - 10 hours ago
The last weeks of 2018 have precipitated significant developments in the so-called trade wars between the United States and its trading partners. Yet the recent agreements made and signed did little to advance efforts toward greater cooperation on the “three-digit sagas”—the tit-for-tat tariff battles occurring under statutory delegations known by their three-digit references, such as Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The announcements coming out of the G20 summit in Argentina make now a good time to take stock of the state of play in the trade wars. *A New NAFT... more »

What is the infrastructure candidates talk about?

Infrastructure. Trump talked about it, so did Obama, so did Bush and Clinton. We only seem to hear about it when someone (of either party) is running for president. But the federal government’s percentage of ownership and cost is very small, so why? About 97% of what we call infrastructure is owned and paid for by local governments and private interests. I found this one really enlightening—I had no idea, but then, we don’t know what we don’t know. In 2015, private infrastructure assets of $40.7 trillion were four times larger than state and local assets of $10.1 trillion, a... more »

If you watched the footage from the meeting with DJT, their body language speaks volumes. No amount of blathering from either of them could disguise the fact that they were both rhetorically pantsed by the president on national television. And the cherry on top was Pelosi spewing loudly about how she and the Democrat House are going to be totally transparent, unlike the Republicans, and then within a nano-second she insisted that the TV cameras be turned off and removed from the room. Basically, one group wanted something, and when they couldn't get it, they took it from another group. In its essence, that's the problem. *The women concerned were not regarded as human beings by their rapists, but as members of a group to be targeted.* This is yet another aspect of the biggest problem in Africa: tribal identity and culture. Will Philosophy Have a Future?

Anoop Verma at The Verma Report - 16 hours ago
Philosophy is the discipline which explores the most abstract portion of intellectual space. As our intellectual space expands, there will be new abstract areas to explore. Therefore philosophy will always have a future. Randall Collins offers an interesting perspective on philosophy’s future in his book *The Sociology of Philosophies: A Global Theory of Intellectual Change*. Here's an excerpt (Page 856 - 857): To say that philosophy is coming to an end is tantamount to saying that the abstraction-reflexivity sequence is coming to an end. It is to say that there are no more deep tr... more »
