"We're taking names".....

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 13 hours ago
Nikki Haley literally begged other ambassadors to support her UN resolution on Gaza (and not one voted for it). Is she not a joke and an embarrassment? The US and apartheid Israel are becoming increasingly isolated as nations around the world step out of their orbit into one that is more sane, caring, sharing and less committed to control and domination of others and nature. A multi-polar world. The US and Israel represent the forces of human enslavement to capital and religious dogma. A unipolar world. Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) is a Palestinian-led movement for free... more »

Yesterday's Primaries

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 13 hours ago
New Jersey was the disaster last night that no one who follows New Jersey Democratic politics didn't ever think it wouldn't be. It's one of the worst of the party boss corrupt Machine states (both parties). All the contested primaries went to the DCCC/Blue Dog/New Dem garbage candidate. Every progressive lost. That's New Jersey... always. No one expected a Kara Eastman or a Amy McGrath situation, where both of them defeated DCCC-preferred Blue Dogs, respectively in Omaha, Nebraska and Lexington, Kentucky. *•* NJ-02- Jeff Van Drew- 55.4% *•* NJ-04- Joshua Welle- 57.2% *•* NJ-07- T... more »

BREAKING: Everyone's going to write the same column!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 13 hours ago
*WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 2018Bruni already has:* Frank Bruni wrote a column today which everyone's going to write. They're going to write it because it's there. Also, because they're never happier than than they are when They All Say The Same Thing. They love the chance to All Say The Same Thing. They'll all be saying it now. Bruni's column repeats the instant script about Bill Clinton's interview with NBC's Craig Melvin. In the part of the sliced-and-diced interview which NBC actually aired, Melvin asked Clinton, roughly six times, if he has apologized, or thinks he should have apolo... more »

Can the Navy Beat Its Greatest Foe? And No, Not Russia, China or North Korea.

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * One word: exhaustion. *It is simply not sustainable to have a 275-ship Navy that has 100 ships underway at any given time. The Navy needs to expand its numbers with smaller, cheaper surface combatants such a new multi-mission frigate that the can relieve high-end warships such as DDGs from mundane missions such as forward presence. With frigates relieving the DDGs from those roles, cruisers and destroyers can focus on high-end missions such as missile defense.* With the USS *John S. Coming Soon to Russia's Army: 6,000 More Tanks

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, Europe* How is that even possible? We have the details. *Another possibility is that these surplus vehicles might be used to supply client states with low-cost combat vehicles. There are plenty of Russian client states that cannot afford brand new frontline hardware like the T-90SM. “It also makes sense as a cheap way to arm a proxy force or poorer allies like Syria,” Kofman said. Whatever the case, the Russian forces will have 6,000 more tanks available to it in the coming years. The question is what will the Russians do with these additional vehicles... more »

EMP Weapons: North Korea’s Secret Plan to Crush America in a War?

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Securiyt, * Or just a fantasy? *“EMP is a loony idea. Once an enemy uses a nuclear weapon—for any reason—it crosses the nuclear threshold and invites a nuclear response. U.S. military commanders would not say ‘Well, it was only an airburst. We should just respond in kind.’ They would answer with an overwhelming, devastating nuclear counter attack. And our nuclear weapons and command and control are designed to operate in a nuclear war environment, not just some puny EMP blast.”* If a war were to breakout on the Korean peninsula over Pyongyang’s development of ... more »

Russia’s New Doomsday Weapons Can Beat U.S. Missile Defenses

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, Europe* If used, everyone loses. *Putin reemphasized that Russia will respond to any nuclear attack with nuclear weapons. “I should note that our military doctrine says Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons solely in response to a nuclear attack, or an attack with other weapons of mass destruction against the country or its allies, or an act of aggression against us with the use of conventional weapons that threaten the very existence of the state. This all is very clear and specific,” Putin said. “As such, I see it is my duty to announce th... more »

The Press Is Wrong on Masterpiece Cakeshop. The Baker Lost.

Andrew Koppelman at Balkinization - 13 hours ago
The press is reporting that the Christian baker who refused to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding has won his case in the Supreme Court. That is technically accurate but deeply misleading. He did get the decision against him reversed, but the next time he turns away a same-sex couple (as he has said he will do), he will lose his case. The Court’s opinion provides no tangible help for the baker or other religious objectors to antidiscrimination laws, though it offers them some important moral encouragement. I explain at The American Prospect, here.

A very worthy new Combat Magnum revolver

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 13 hours ago
Smith & Wesson originally applied the name "Combat Magnum" to their short-barreled Model 19/66 K-frame revolver chambered in .357 Magnum. It gained a stellar reputation among cops and civilian carriers alike during the 1960's and beyond. It's still being made. However, Smith & Wesson have now introduced another "Combat Magnum", this time chambered for .44 Magnum. It's a short-barreled variant of their Model 69, an L-frame, five-shot revolver. For those of us who remember the long-out-of-production Model 696, a 5-shot L-frame revolver chambered in .44 Special, the new revolver... more »

Culture War Cats Edition

Karen Garcia at Sardonicky - 13 hours ago
Just in case you still had any doubts, Donald Trump's official job description is our self-proclaimed culture warrior-in-chief. His latest act was to disinvite Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles from a White House celebration. He instead used the occasion to outdo embattled Culture Warrior Princess Roseanne Barr in belting out one of our great national hymns. Donald didn't have to take a knee to disrespect the flag. He kneed the sensibilities of the entire nation with his botched lip-synced rendition of *God Bless America*. The god in question, of course, being himself. ... more »

Bernard Lewis And The Invasion of Iraq

He also threw in with the neoconservatives, and contributed to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. As early as the1950s Professor Lewis argued that Islam and the West were diametrically opposed to each other. In 1957, Lewis argued there was a clash between Islam and Judeo-Christianity. In 1990, he would turn that into a clash of civilization, which would be popularized by Samuel Huntington. The twins are IVF babies. It's a process that involves many needles and many very unsexy activities. Here's a picture of them when they were just an embryo. One single embryo. The process has advanced over the years, and our doctors felt that it was only necessary to introduce a single embryo to my wife's Baby Nurturing Environment. Somewhere at the six-to-eight week mark, we had our a... more »

Roseanne, the NFL, and Employee Free Speech at Work

Donna Ballman at Screw You Guys, I'm Going Home - 15 hours ago
There are two big stories in the headlines involving employee speech and the consequences thereof. If you haven't heard of both, welcome back from the coma. The most recent was Roseanne Barr's racist tweet rant, which resulted in the cancellation of her number 1 rated TV show, Roseanne. Then there has been the ongoing saga of NFL players kneeling during the national anthem in protest over the extreme number of police killings of black people. The NFL recently decided to impose penalties on teams with players who kneel, but will allow them to stay in the locker room. So, let's first ... more »

Was Trump’s Demand of the Justice Department Appropriate? Let the People Decide.

mweybrecht at Lawfare - 15 hours ago
Over the past week, President Trump has done a great many things that have raised alarm within the national security establishment. He has attacked his attorney general’s recusal from the Russia investigation, approvingly quoted a column describing the “Stormtrooper tactics” of the Mueller investigation, and, most recently, declared his right to pardon himself. But though the news moves quickly these days, it’s worth taking a look back at a controversy from a few weeks past: the president’s demand that the Department of Justice investigate the circumstances behind the FBI’s allege... more »

Paper Tiger: Why a Battlecruiser Is No Battleship

Michael Peck at The National Interest - 15 hours ago
*Michael Peck* *Security, * You can have armor, firepower or speed, but not all three, and armor was the trait that was sacrificed. *The irony is that while battlecruisers are gone, they are still with us today. Battlecruisers were eggshells armed with hammers, which exactly describes modern warships. Today's combat vessels mount weapons of staggering lethality, especially anti-ship missiles. They also defend themselves with cannons and missiles to shoot down incoming weapons with a technological finesse that would have seemed like an H.G. Wells novel to a sailor in 1914.* "Th... more »

Schopenhauer On Fame

Schopenhauer’s Bust in FrankfurtI think Arthur Schopenhauer might be the greatest stylist among philosophers. It is surprising to see a “philosopher” using such elegant and lucid prose to express his ideas. Here’s an excerpt from his essay, “Fame” (*The Wisdom of Life*; Part IV, Section V): Whether authors ever live to see the dawn of their fame depends upon the chance of circumstance; and the higher and more important their works are, the less likelihood there is of their doing so. That was an incomparably fine saying of Seneca's, that fame follows merit as surely as the body cas... more »

The Slavo-Macedonians As A Tool For The Creation Of Tito’s Greater Yugoslavia

Vladislav B. SOTIROVIĆ at OrientalReview.org - 16 hours ago
The Yugoslav post-1945 policy of the recognition of Slavo-Macedonians as a separate ethnolinguistic entity was extremely important for the creation of the separate political unit of Macedonia within the Yugoslav federation. After 1945 Yugoslav authorities claimed that the Macedonian diaspora living outside of Yugoslavia has to be incorporated into the “motherland” – a Yugoslav Macedonia. Oops -- this wasn't supposed to happen: Democrats were on track to avoid getting locked out of the general election in a number of key, battleground House districts as the vote count from California's top-two primary continued early Wednesday. The party has scrambled to avoid being shut out of the general election in three Southern California districts where large numbers of Democratic candidates split the party's votes. There are two technologies that accessed rainforest soils. One is raised fields or lowland ditch and bank systems used all over the Americas. These were limited to natural wetlands but allowed the maximum output while also supplying ample fish protein from the ditch dwelling tilapia. The other tech is the application of biochar to retain nutrients. This works everywhere but best in fully drained soils where no muck is ever to hand. The method employed the use of a maize crop to produce a crop but also dried plant material at end of season. This was then reduced to biochar in ... more »

Why Profit Is So Important

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
[image: rices.PNG] Profit is the only way in which it is possible to determine if you are been efficient at delivering a good or service. That obviously matters as all human enterprise is subject to private conversion which quickly reduces the size of the overall economy. Thus profit shunning ideologies soon deeply depressed the economies involved. At the same time there are many services that society requires and these are usually generated by a collective regulation or order allowing suppliers to price their services. The profit system is very much in operation. Thus atte... more »

A professor of toxicology explains how EMFs cause biological damage and even cancer

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 19 hours ago
He has isolated a plausible biochemical route for EMFs to disturb our biology. Extending this to actual disease is tenuous and premature. A more exact problem is to determine exposure levels in terms of practical distances. Better yet determine shielding methods. Most hardware is well away from the individual and the drop of rate is huge. Thus real exposure should be minimal. Our biggest risk driver remains the cell phone, often near our bodies. A simple solution there would be to shield the cell phone with aluminum foil if you sleep too close to it. Even a small lined bow... more »

Could the F-117 Nighthawk Make a 'Stealth' Comeback?

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * Developed in the 1970s and declared operational in complete secrecy in 1983, the F-117 ushered in a new era that would enable the United States to dominate warfare for decades to come. *The F-117 first flew in 1981 and eventually entered service in 1983. Lockheed was able to develop an operational aircraft quickly as the company built the jet out of existing components already in use on other planes. The fly-by-wire controls came from the F-16 while the engines were non-afterburning versions of the F/A-18A’s General Electric F404 turbofans. Additiona... more »

5 Ways D-Day Could Have Been an Epic Disaster

Michael Peck at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Michael Peck* *Security, * As Eisenhower contemplated the assault on Hitler's Fortress Europe in the hours before D-Day, he knew how dangerous the operation was. *But what if Hitler hadn't meddled, or a crash development program had enabled jet fighters to fly in significant numbers on D-Day? The Luftwaffe's bomber fleet was a skeleton force by the summer of 1944, so the invasion probably wouldn't have been disrupted by bombing. But large numbers of Me-262s might have driven Allied bombers from the sky, enabling the panzer divisions to operate in daylight with impunity.* Genera... more »

The two sides have remained on a war footing as Ethiopia had, until now, refused to... more »

Re Mark Graber's hypothetical

Sandy Levinson at Balkinization - 1 day ago
Key to understanding Mark's hypo, I think, is the assumption that the successor to the murderous VP, if displaced, would necessarily be the Speaker of the House from the opposition party. That's certainly true if one accepts the constitutionality of the Succession in Office Act. But Akhil and Vikram Amar have cogently argued that the Act is in fact unconstitutional inasmuch as the Constitution requires that the Congress designate an "officer" of the U.S. to succeed to a vacant presidency, and members of Congress are simply not such "officers." Ditto, of course, with the President... more »
