Exclusive: Teacher Fired for Showing Pornographic Art; Media Tell Only Half the Story

[image: exclusive-teacher-fired-for-showing-pornographic-art-media-tell-only-half-the-story] A Utah art teacher was recently fired for showing children art postcards that included nude images. Now some parents are up in arms and the school is accused of Puritanism and, contradictively, political correctness. But there’s more to the story than the media have told.

in a youth novel about adoption, abortion doesn't even exist

laura k at wmtc - 13 hours ago
I am reading a YA novel about adopted people connecting with their biological siblings and parents. This is a topic I have written about and have an interest in, and it's supposed to be a very good book: *Far From the Tree*, by Robin Benway. On page 3, the teenage protagonist knows she cannot raise a child, so she immediately begins the adoption process, interviewing prospective parents during her pregnancy. Fine. The word abortion is never used. Not fine. There is no "She knew she would never have an abortion, so she...", no "It was too late to have an abortion, and anyway she doub... more »

I think I'm wearing out my keyboard

I began a new writing project in early December. I finished the first book (just shy of 100,000 words) in only a few weeks, and accepted a challenge from Miss D. to keep it up and write the complete trilogy before publishing any of it. I accordingly sent out the first volume to alpha readers (there's a teaser excerpt at that link, too), and began the second. Yesterday, I finished the main arc of Book 2. It's too short, at about 86,000 words, but there's an additional plot/character arc I haven't yet included (I started work on that this morning). By the time I finish the extra ... more »

Clyde was there at the Chicago Pile -- the world's first nuclear reactor. The Other Cuba Crisis That Rocked Russia and America

Richard Purcell at The National Interest - 17 hours ago
*Richard Purcell* *Security, * The presence of 2,000 to 3,000 Soviet combat troops in Cuba was unacceptable to many Washington leaders, both Republican and Democrat. In the fall of 1979, a furor erupted in the United States over the discovery of Soviet combat troops in Cuba. Scarcely remembered today, it was an episode of the Cold War that seemed like a very big deal at the time, so much so that it prompted U.S. president Jimmy Carter to address the American people on nationwide television. Ultimately, it was an uproar over practically nothing, but it helped derail a major nucle... more »

Here's a great video tribute to the A-10 Thunderbolt II ground support aircraft, and the work it's done on behalf of US troops in Afghanistan. Having been in need of support like that from time to time (but mostly not received it - that was a different war, on a different continent, where our air support was extremely limited), this was eye-opening for me. I suspect that since aviation became important on the battlefield, any number of soldiers from any number of armies would applaud the A-10 pilots for what they did - unless they were on the receiving end of it. Collusion— Or Something Worse?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
It would have been-- or at least *should* have been-- any sentient being to walk away from the Trump *NY Times* interview without 3 overarching thoughts, listed below in no particular order: 1- Wow, what a liar! 2- Wow, he’s senile! 3- Wow, he is totally obsessed with the Russian collusion! He’s also out of touch with any semblance of objective reality, but that combines all three of the other thoughts into one less specific trait which most Americans have been watching-- with alarm-- grow over the last year. I was especially taken with how many times he brought up-- unbidden-- th... more »

2017 Was A Bad Year For Political Pundits

President Trump celebrates with Congressional Republican on the South Lawn of the White House. REUTERS/Carlos Barria *Politico:* *The Worst Political Predictions of 2017* *Spoiler alert: Everybody was wrong.* A year ago at this time, the world was falling apart. That, or on the verge of being saved. Or maybe something in between; it depended on whom you asked. The uncertainty of that moment was the natural heir of all the surprises of 2016: the Brexit vote in favor of leaving the European Union, the election of Donald Trump, the defeat of Hillary Clinton, the World Series victory ... more »

How Trump's NAFTA renegotiations could help Mexican workers

Luis Gómez Romero, Senior Lecturer in Human Rights, Constitutional Law and Legal Theory, University of Wollongong at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 1 day ago
Trump has attacked NAFTA, saying that cheap, under-regulated Mexican labor hurts American workers. If he's right, then NAFTA negotiations could be a chance to push Mexico on workers' rights.

Quite Small

Particle Physics - the study of very small things and the mathematics that predicts them and how they make up everything is a hobby of mine and I'm not very good at it. The Standard Model lacks a graviton and possibly other particles, but the discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN laboratories in Geneva, Switzerland in 2012 is included and it's one of the fundamental achievements in advancing the realm of Physics in the last 100 years. These are the legos of the universe. Everything is made of them. Are there smaller particles? Strings but we're still working on these. And while we'... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"

“Long before Stonehenge was built, well before the Dead Sea Scrolls were written, ancient artists painted life-sized figures on canyon walls in Utah, USA- but why? Nobody is sure. The entire panel of figures, which dates back about 7,000 years, is called the Great Gallery and was found on the walls of Horseshoe Canyon in Canyonlands National Park. *Click image for larger size.* The humans who painted them likely hunted Mammoths. The unusual fuzziness of largest figure led to this mural section's informal designation as the Holy Ghost Panel, although the intended attribution and socie... more »

Newspaper Editor Tackles AP Over Fake Trump News, Gets Runaround

Selwyn Duke at rss - 1 day ago
[image: newspaper-editor-tackles-ap-over-fake-trump-news-gets-runaround] If you want to know why the term "fake news" is so often used, well, it’s because what it describes is so often disgorged. A great example is brought to us by small-town newspaper editor Frank Miele, who relates how an Associated Press story contained two clear falsehoods about President Trump.

Despite Setbacks, Liberty Will Prevail in 2018

Ron Paul at rss - 1 day ago
[image: despite-setbacks-liberty-will-prevail-in-2018] Happy New Year! We always approach a new year with anticipation, hope, and also some worries. Last year was one of the strangest political years I have seen in some time. A new Republican president spent his first year pursuing more or less the same foreign policy as his Democratic predecessor and the Democratic Party spent the year looking under every rock in the US for a “Russian connection” or any other reason to see him impeached over it.

Why North Korea Is So Scared of America

Zachary Keck at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Zachary Keck* *Security, Asia* History gives us the key. *Most outside analysts are far more skeptical that the U.S. strategic bombing campaign had much impact on the course of the war. The political scientist Robert Pape argues that North Korea and China’s major concessions in 1951 were the result of the air campaign weakening their military forces’ ability to achieve their objectives (coercion by denial) rather than the strategic bombing (coercion by punishment). Many others have argued that air power’s most effective contribution to the Korean War was in the interdiction of... more »

Video: How I 'Went to War' with the U.S. Air Force

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * How our defense editor trained the mighty USAF. *We maintained a loose formation while climbing up to the correct altitude for the exercise. Initially, we expected to only reach about 14,000ft, but due to the less than ideal weather conditions, Vodka Flight was ordered to climb up to 22,000ft. That was the altitude we entered the range at after the roughly 10 minute transit into the “fight.” Flying is always a dynamic environment—things are always changing and the pilot has to adjust. It one of the many reasons that simulators—while they are useful t... more »

How to Guarantee a War with North Korea

Ted Galen Carpenter at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Ted Galen Carpenter* *Security, Asia* Once American military personnel die from an enemy offensive, it would be nearly impossible for a president to walk away from treaty obligations. As tensions flare on the Korean Peninsula, concerns mount about North Korea’s nuclear- weapons capability. Secretary of Defense James Mattis recently stated that, contrary to rumors and alarmist media reports, Pyongyang does not yet pose a serious threat to the American homeland. The same cannot be said, however, for the U.S. troops stationed in South Korea and Japan. Those tripwire forces have bec... more »

Will the Fed's Predictions for the American Economy Come True?

Samuel Rines at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Samuel Rines* *Economics, North America* [image: A screen displays the Dow Jones Industrial Average after the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in Manhattan, New York] 2018 could turn out to be an interesting year for the economy. At its final meeting of the Yellen era, the Federal Reserve raised rates. But that doesn't really matter. Everyone expected the Fed to raise interest rates, and it delivered. What made people nervous was future moves by the Fed. Specifically, how would the Fed react to tax reform? And the Fed answered by suggesting it would not attempt... more »

Trump's Jerusalem Move Could Provide a Pathway to Peace

Ahmed Charai at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Ahmed Charai* *Security, Middle East* [image: Palestinian demonstrator kicks a burning tire during clashes with Israeli troops at a protest near the West Bank city of Nablus] Arab countries, historically a guarantor of strategic depth for Palestinian rejectionist forces, showed that they are becoming a bastion of support for compromise. The view has set in among Westerners that President Donald Trump’s choice to recognize the Israeli capital in Jerusalem isolated the U.S. diplomatically, cost Washington its role as an Israeli-Palestinian mediator and damaged prospects for a pea... more »

Who Watches the Watchers in the U.S. Navy?

*James Holmes* *Security, Asia* [image: The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan steams the Philippine Sea during Annual Exercise 2017, joint military training between the U.S. Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force] What does the latest Navy Strategic Readiness Review say about the state of the U.S. Navy? So how would the ghosts of strategists past rate the U.S. Navy’s just-released Strategic Readiness Review? The review represents the navy’s quasi-independent inquest into the hardware and human failings—a.k.a. problems with “readiness”—that wracked the sea service during ... more »
