Wolves and Such

Rock work circa 1980*White wolves at the White Wolf Mine? * Don't count it out too soon. The pack of wolves that the Arizona Department of Game and Fish introduced into the wild in the area have been sighted about eight miles from the hovel currently under construction. With highs in the 60's during Christmas week (not winter weather in the least), the construction is moving forward at an acceptable rate. More on that below. Wolves have not been harrying the tradesmen at the White Wolf Mine, but one would expect them to show enough respect to let the men keep on with their import... more »

Test Of Wills Islamic State Rebuilding Vs Iraqi Government Policing

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 14 hours ago
The Islamic State is currently in a transition phase. It has been defeated on the battlefield and is switching back to an insurgency while trying to rebuild its cadres. The U.S. led Coalition recently said that it only numbered around 1,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria, a fraction of the amount it had just a year ago. In September and October the militant’s newsletter Al-Naba talked about no longer engaging in coventional battles as the group was suffering heavy losses and facing Coalition air strikes. It now has to not only get new followers, but set up networks, and find financing ...more »

The Charvaka Philosophy

Anoop Verma at The Verma Report - 15 hours ago
The Charvaka School is believed to have existed in India in the 600 B.C.E or earlier than that. The School preached materialism, atheism, empiricism, and scepticism. The School is also known as the Lokayata because Brhaspati Laukya, also known as Brahmanspati, was its original founder. Brhaspati Laukya is the author of the Barhaspatya-sutras. As this work is no longer extant, it is difficult to have a clear understanding of the Brhaspati Laukya’s thoughts. There’s Only One Way to Stop China from Dominating Asia (Think NATO)

Robert E. McCoy at The National Interest - 15 hours ago
*Robert E. McCoy* *Security, * Weaker nations in the region need to form a military alliance, so that in unity they acquire the means to face down Beijing. Beijing is relentless in its pursuit of territory that it feels once was a part of the Middle Kingdom. A lack of coordination in resisting this irredentist activity is having consequences, for ignoring it merely delays – and worsens – the problem. For example, if the law-abiding nations of the world had taken effective action in the South China Sea when China reemphasized its Nine Dash Line claims some years ago, we would not... more »

* This is my column in BusinessWorld on December 7, 2017. Very often, the purpose of government is to make cheap things become more expensive. It does this via high and multiple taxes, regulatory fees, mandatory contributions, and multiple permits and bureaucracies that raise the cost of compliance. Many governments display hypocrisy when they say that they want to control inflation yet create those multiple taxes and bureaucracies that create inflationary pressure. There's every bit as much potential for conflict in the Middle East as there is on the Korean Peninsula. Strategy Page has a very insightful and useful summary of the current situation. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have gone public in support of an Arab-Israeli alliance to oppose Iran. Many (Arabs, Israelis and Iranians) believe that such an alliance won’t last long but that is not crucial. The alliance only has to last long enough to halt the spread of Iranian power and influence. Israel has been through this before. The peace deals with Jordan and Egypt have largely held even though ... more »

*Insurrection Arrested - listen to the silence* It has been clear for the past month that something huge is underway. It is managed by the military and military secrecy applies. Last Friday, Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency enacting special powers. Russian Arms Companies Are Facing New U.S. Sanctions

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 day ago
*DW:* *Kalashnikov stays tight-lipped ahead of new US sanctions* New American sanctions are set to hit the Russian weapons industry. But during a press tour to the home of the famous AK-47 rifle, questions about sanctions were met with defiance – and silence. Traditional Urdmurt plaid dresses, a log cabin in the snow, and lots of potatoes. It's not what I had expected of the Russian Foreign Ministry's press tour of the Kalashnikov factory. The tour to the industrial city of Izhevsk, the capital of the Urdmurt Republic in the Western Urals, promised a rare glimpse of the company k... more »

Asia Is Unable To Stand Up Tp China

Image from The Economist *Robert E. McCoy, Asia Times:* *Only unified international action can stop China’s expansion* *A lack of coordination in resisting Beijing's relentless pursuit of territory has worsened the problem, but countries have been split on how to respond.* Beijing is relentless in its pursuit of territory that it feels once was a part of the Middle Kingdom. A lack of coordination in resisting this irredentist activity is having consequences, for ignoring it merely delays – and worsens – the problem. For example, if the law-abiding nations of the world had taken e... more »

*“Wind On The Water”* by Graham Nash and David Crosby "Over the years you have been hunted by the men who threw harpoons, And in the long run we will kill you just to feed the pets we raise, put the flowers in your vase, and make the lipstick for your face. Over the years you swam the ocean Following feelings of your own, Now you are washed up on the shoreline, I can see your body lie, It's a shame you have to die to put the shadow on our eye. Maybe we'll go, Maybe we'll disappear, It's not that we don't know, It's just that we don't want to care. Under the bridges, Over the foam, Wind on... more »

Chet Raymo, “When The Morning Stars Sing Together”

*“When The Morning Stars Sing Together”* by Chet Raymo "A Chinese proverb: 'A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song.' Which might be an acceptable epigraph for this blog. I can't imagine anyone coming here looking for answers. Certainly, providing answers is the last thing on my mind. I would like to think you come for song. We are, I think, by and large, a community who distrusts answers, at least answers that are vehemently held. We are made uncomfortable by stridency. By dogma. By the desire to proselytize. We wear our truths lightly, gaily... more »
